  7. !00% correct Mal, a terrible decision to push through their plans, although I do agree with their reasonings they gave. The procedure after eight years was a deliberate attempt to shut down a reasonable alternative plan, if their explanations are valid then I feel they are correct, I felt their body language and attitude just showed contempt for the councillors, I hope at least they really consider the alternative plan.
  8. Bit of a bad tempered meeting but it was so wrong! Political lines clearly on display! Procedures are there to protect everyone not be circumnavigated for the benefit of a few!

  15. As a Bedlington Stoker myself I find this extremely interesting. I know that there are 2 Stokers on the war memorial in Bedlington. I am the son of the late William Crawford (Bill) Stoker, grandson of the late Edward Noble Stoker, and great grandson of Ralph Stoker. Apparently Edward was one of a large number of Stokers in his generation.
  16. Alan, Thanks for the update. Yes, Miss Smith and Mr Hedderly were the Deputy Head replacements for Miss Edna Humphrey ( who passed away on the day before her 100th birthday) and Mr Richards who both left BGS in 1964. Miss King/Mrs Penhalluric replaced a Mrs Flanagan who left in December 1962. ( a mere 63 years ago). The only female PE teacher (can't remember her name) that I remember (in 1967) played cricket for England women and thrashed my bowling to the far end of the Hockey pitch). She arranged a hockey match between the senior girls hockey team and the Upper sixth boys. We (the boys) were completely outplayed and had to resort to GBH to sneak a 1-0 win. Keith
  17. @Keith Harle - i will update the photo at the weekend and add 1966 to then photo. Other updates from the ex pupils on the Facebook group Bygone Bedlington are :- Miss SCHERF to Miss SCHERPF Miss LABarre add (French Assistant. I will add Deputy Head to mr Hedderly. Was Miss Smith also a Deputy Head at the same time as Mr Hedderly? -------------------- When you mentioned Mrs Penhalluric in you previous comment you put a '?' next to her name. One member of the FB group did say that there was a Miss King, later Mrs Penhalluric, the girls PE teacher.

  20. Alan, The photo could only have been taken in spring/summer of 1966. According to the 1966 BGS Mag, Ron Cave joined BGS in January 1966 and Miss Heywood, Harry Dawson, Kevin Tanney and Mrs Penhallurick( who?) left in the summer of 1966. Miss Heywood retired, Harry Dawson went to Wansbeck School, Ashington, Kevin Tanney to St Mark's School Westerhope. Mrs Penhallurick went to teach PE at Westmoor Grammar School. Mr Shivas taught up Summer 68 but was very ill in his last term and then passed away in November 68. Keith

  25. @Canny lass & @Keith Harle - my memory says Mansel's first job was at Moscadinni's travel ageny that was next door to the cafe on Ravensworth Terrace. I think it was a storeroom for the cafe converted into a small travel shop and mansel was the first employee. Don't remember how many years he did that job for.

  27. Many thanks to both of you for your help. Mansel and his wife Margaret (nee Sewell) moved to Hemingbrough YO8 6RA in 2000. Margaret was originally from Leeds and they married in 1968. In 2018, Margaret is listed as living at 37, Meadowfields Drive, YO31 9HW. Mansel's last entry to the British Caledonian staff blog Crewroom D was in 2018. In the past, I supplied Mansel with a few photos for his Semper Sursum website so I might send a letter to that address to get an update. I don't want to upset anyone though. Keith
  28. @Keith Harle - photo posted on the Bygone Bedlington Facebook group yesterday asking if anyone knows the year the photo was taken but no response yet. I will give it a few days before I post an updated photo within this album and hopefully we have confirmation ofm the year it was taken. Alan
