Hello all. My name is Ainsley and I live in the US. My father's family (Ainsleys and Pagets) is from Bedlington. He has Alzheimer's and lives in the past now and is very interested in hearing as much as he can about Joseph Ainsley, the guy who bred the first Bedlington terrier. I was hoping there might be some local information/gossip stuff that isn't available through the internet searches I've done. Thank you.

Hi Ainsley,

Welcome to Bedlington, possibly some of the forum members may be able to help you with your search for knowledge about the Bedlington terrier but I don't know much about its history. Its often claimed that it was first bred in Rothbury which is not to far from Bedlington.

Thanks for your reply. Actually, it's information about Joseph Ainsley, the man who "created" the dog that my father is interested in. He is related to my father's mother, Catherine Ainsley, but my father doesn't remember what the relationship is. Ainsley Brown

Hello The local author Evan Martin mentions the origins of the Bedlington Terrier in his book Images of Bedlington it is for sale at Amazon, in 1820 Ned and John Coates sons of a local Vicar were the first breeders, but other breeders are mentioned, in Victorian times, there are Joe Aynsley, Bob Hay, Jim Howe, Bob Fish, Tom Soulsby, Bill Hay, Tom Bell,Bob Steel and Ned Stoker.

The spelling of Aynsley is different, but the first name is Joe. If I find out any more information I will let you know.
