Electricity arrives at Netherton
Netherton colliery and the pit houses were connected to electricity in 1934 when Bedlington Coal Company acquired the colliery and carried out a programme of modernisation. I was told that at first each of the colliery houses was provided with a single light socket for a 40 watt bulb. Some people welcomed this as a wonderful improvement, but others were very suspicious for a time.
