Bedlington Twang
I had that happen to me one time when I worked down in Bristol. Another north eastener noted my accent and asked 'you from Ashington'? Well... I was born there. I nearly fell off my chair.

Merry christmas to all. Drove through Bedlington this very day, saw some changes and rekindled memories of yesteryear. All the best, Jojo.

Netherton Colliery - People And Places
Just been browsing through your pics, Carole. As fascinating as ever. I remember a school group photo from Netherton school taken in the mid 1930's - featured the class dressed up as Robin Hood and his merry men. My dad was one of participents, but the pic has now been lost. It was in a shop window in bedlington if I remember correctly about 10 or so years ago - much to my late dad's delight! He had a copy made there and then. Unsure about the name of the shop, but it was a photographer's shop on Front Street East - opposite the church if I recall.

Thanks for that link, Carole. Some towns don't look to have changed all that much in the past 100 years.

Bedlington Twang
Throughout my life I've been somewhat frowned upon for having what is nown as a Bedlington twang. You say certain words that only 'us lot' would know, but maybe someone from Durham or Alnwick maybe wouldn't. Does this language still exist? For the best part it's all mainly pit-talk, our reletives who had been down the mines would come back to the hoos n tahk owa fast n divin't gan doon that lonnin, cos it's thick 'o clarts n yiv got scyull the morn - so divin't give the teacha's a gliff. Perfect English of course, but move away from the area and BONG... ne bugga naz what the hell ya on aboot n just scratch tha heeds n wunda. There is talk of this [last century] way of talking is dying out and the bedlington/ pit village type of twang is now dilluted. Which IMHO, is a shame.

Spent My Holiday's In Bedlington As A Child
I've loads of scant memories of Halloweening & Bonfire Night/ fireworks display - on one occasion I got lost if I remember rightly from that big field behind Beech Grove. The nights were cold and dark, but the memories remain warm and vivid. I remember my parents' dismay on the unveiling of the 'spaceship shaped' working mens club next to the library. Atlee Park, going down Furnace Bank on my bike for the first time... A great town for which a peice of my heart shall always remain.

Floods
It all looks so nasty on the news. I've never known Morpeth to flood before. Pretty much every river in the north east rose considerably over the weekend, just looks like Morpeth got the short end of the stick. Cheer up though, there's a tail end of a hurricane heading over towards us from the states. That's nice of them.

Tweddle
I know of Tweddle's that live in Widdrington [approx 10 or so miles north of Bedlington]

Spent My Holiday's In Bedlington As A Child
Welcome to the board. I spent my first 7 years living in Bedlington and I still have lots of good memories about that place. No bad ones at all. So that alone says to me that Bedlington's a good place at heart.

Huw's It Gannin?
Hello all, it's been a while. I was up in Bedlington the other week visiting the cemetary at West Lea, where I have quite a few reletives dwelling; Molly Napier, Ellen 'Nellie' Turnbull, Jimmy Halliday etc... Just realized the school I went to was Stead Lane's first school near The Oval. I was there during the mid 70's - big hello if anyone may remember me. I remember the Pursey family and old Mrs Spry with the glass eye in the estate next to the terrier pub. Even though I moved away from the town aged 7, I still have lots of fond rose tinted memories of the place.

Raspberry Ruffles was my downfall. Anyway, a pic of my late dad Joe, taken in the early 60's I believe.

Huw's It Gannin?
That's right, he had a big red van if I remember rightly. He always sold me fruit as opposed to sweets; anapple, anorange and a nanna. His shop was around the corner from the terrier pub on that winding street that led towards the town centre.

Loathe: Top End Subway
I remember the recent Top Club getting built - the one that looks like a space ship. I also remember this subway too - nasty places.

I think they're lovely.

Loathe: The Queues In Nettos
That's about normal in any shop I go to. Eight tills closed and two on - and queues as far as the bacon counter.
