  1. Earlier discussion on mice set me thinking how very long I've had my trusty optical Logi Mouse. Although it's still working just fine I decided to have a look at state-of-the-art rodents. Perusing the Logitech website I learned that "optical is obsolete" and that with a MX1000 my "computing experience will never be the same".

Now, being a s-o-t-a sort of person, this was just too difficult a proposition to resist. Santa has therefore been instructed to gimme!

Here (for your envy) are the links:

Warning: Do not all rush at once to replace your pathetically outdated optical mice with this curvaceous beastie - yes, even the many Bedlingtonians long known to have "tricky polished or wood-grain surfaces". The resulting laser display over Bedders could seriously detract from all those magnificent Christmas lights on the Front Street!

BTW it is widely rumoured that this device actually started life as a design for a contactless, ever-sharp, electric razor - until the unfortunate series of accidents! So, it is not recommended that even the electric-razorless persons here continue to experiment with one along those lines, however appealing the convenience of a dual-usage mouse/razor may be.

  3. Next July, it will be an amazing 20 years since the class of 86 left Bedlington High School. To celebrate this extraordinary feat, we are organising a reunion of all those former pupils who attended the school at that time. This reunion will be on Saturday July 1st 2006 ... venue to be confirmed.

You might want to post a (slightly more formal) version of this to the Public Notices section. There it won't get burried by other posts.

  4. You may have seen the recent TV coverage about the Guide Post dental practice that's cutting its patient list from 6000 to 2500 and requiring local people to agree to pay £14 a month, plus a £10 joining fee.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/tyne/4436160.stm

Do you feel that local dentists are abusing their position, or do you think that the Government is letting us down badly?

[Monthly poll results will be published on a web page which will be well indexed by the major search engines. We may selectively revisit subjects to see if there have been any significant shifts in public opinion]

  5. The Royal Mail uses 342 million rubber bands a year to bundle up letters. It has switched to using red bands so that they can be more easily seen when dropped.

Comment: This isn't working, but only 1 million of the 342 million end up on the ground outside of my door. :)

  6. A special interest section should be opened, just a thought.

It's up to locals how things develop. We'll sort and categorise albums according to what's uploaded, but the individual albums are 100% under control of the owning member.

Ditto with the forums really. And the Blogs are well.. just blogs!

  7. Personally I have found their food to be top rank. A simple case of food poisoining would not affect a canine, their constitution is such that even raw meat can be easily digested. And I agree, the term '!*!@# ' is highly offensive. I prefer 'Kitchen Sink' myself.

I'm not arguing with the quality of the food, and have already said that it wasn't bacterial food poisoning. Far too quick for that - and believe me, I know what bacterial food poisoning is like!

They certainly aren't Chinese, and I'm sure their food wasn't offended. The way I felt when I wrote that, it could have been expressed a in a lot more un-PC way! :)

At the end of the day the problem was badly handled by them, and I don't have to appologise for being made ill!

  8. An exellent chinese meal from Golden City on Front Street East last night.

Beef Ku-Bo it was; top ingredients, well prepared, and very tasty. From previous experiences they do a good line in crispy noodles. :)

Some years back this establishment went through a rather rough period when the food was often barely edible, and poorly prepared. Once or twice it was taken back - an extremely rare event here. But, I believe that the establishment has changed hands at least once since then.

Keep up the high standard, and congratulations Mr.... no, Claire Short might have something to say! :D

  9. Hmmm... For what may have been a one off instance; you have probably just destroyed their business!

Don't think so. Only they have the power to do that!

It might have been a one-off night, or even a one-hour event, but I'd bet anyone else served the same time felt ill, though may not have realised why.

Been going there for many decades, and will surely return at some point. But, just at present, I've gone completely off F&C. When the craving returns the next ones will doubtless be from Moby !*!@#'s on the Glebe Road!

  10. Clean the mouse ball, always a winner

Actually, it's the rollers that collect the gunge. The ball acts as a sort of offset-litho printer and transfers the grease and hair to the rollers. Scrape them off with a something not too sharp, use a cotton bud for the final clean, and, for good measure maybe give the ball a scrub in hot soapy water, and towel dry it before refitting. Then, good as new! :)

I've used optical mice ever since Logitech introduced the first ones with special mouse pads, twenty odd years ago - about £50 a throw then - and wouldn't use anything else. They produced the first one without a special pad too. A principal since extensively copied - including by copycat Microslop! I'm still using the original ten year old one of those right now. Magic!

  11. Although the Gallery is now on-line, and you can create an Album (or several Albums, there's no limitation on how many you can have!), there's a rather restrictive limit on the size of image that you can upload. It's probably good enough for almost all phone pix, but precludes high resolution stuff.

This isn't a file size limitation but a pixel count limitation. It's due to the large amount of memory the server needs to process the thumbnails. Presently members can upload 800 x 600 images but not 1024 x 768 images. We are working to remove this limitation at an early date.

You create a gallery album through "My Controls" (the link up top), and you can choose whether it is a private album or viewable by the public. Albums are private by default. You can turn the public switch on or off from your panel on an album by album basis, so you don't have to actually show a particular photo album until you're happy with it, and can turn it on and off (or delete it entirely) at your whim.

Please feel free to experiment. You can contact me for help through my PMS button - click on my BB name.

  12. Welcome home A! :):):)

How long before we see an "Our Friends Up North" Forum I wonder? Have you noted the Personal Messaging facility - no expense has been spared! ;)

The old administrator sends his regards, and assures you that there will be no more BS!

  13. I've just spoken to (Labour Leader) Councillor Alan Douglas in the last half hour, and he's promised to address some of the issues about the Town that are raised here.

His comment on the "Bedlington wants it's independence back" issue: "There's no way in a million years that this is going to happen!"

  14. About an hour ago my wife collected Fish & Chips at the Front Street East chippy (the traditional one that now sells !*!@# food too, Jennys (?). A few minutes after starting to eat I felt nauseous. At first I put it down to having picked up a chill or something today. Then my wife said that she too was feeling sick.

I continued eating but immediately lost any appetite. Strange, as I'd had very little to eat today - the odd cup of tea and a biscuit only. The remainder of my F&C were fed to the two large dogs, who were waiting greedily, and eat like horses. Amazingly, both of them vomited the lot back within a minute or two of each other.

Don't really know what the problem is, but I suspect the cooking oil was way off. Anyway it was immediately reported to the chippy, and the lady there said she'd stop serving straight away. I do hope she does as there's obviously a bad problem.

We've all recovered from the nauseousness fairly rapidly, but I'm still feeling a bit shaky. It seems to me that it's more likely a chemical problem than any sort of bacterial thing. I've had bacterial food poisoning once or twice before in (posh & expensive) restaurants, and this isn't anything like as bad just at the moment. Probably not serious enough to report to the P.H., but a offer of a refund would have been nice! :(

  15. I'm compiling a list of Bedlington phone numbers. Phone numbers that all Bedlingtonians (includes the former Bedlingtonshire) would wish to print out and stick on their pin-board/wall or even upload to their mobiles. We're all perfectly organised in Bedlington! ;)

The actual list will appear in the Public Announcements section. It will be dynamically updated, so you can dump it to your printer regularly (without all the graphics) by using the thread's print button.

Please post on that thread with the phone numbers that you think should be added to the list. The user submitted information (thread replies) will be pre-moderated - i.e. they won't appear in public, but I will extract data from them quite regularly, and all help will be acknowledged.

The list doesn't want to grow much beyond a page or two otherwise it will defeat the original purpose. So we'll do some pruning at intervals, in the light of suggestions.
