Tonyp Salmon Place was just off the Market Place in Bedlington and often called 'The Neuk' or Muggars' Nook' , although Salmon Place was the row of 2 rooms houses and cottages at the bottom of Muggars' Neuk (Muggar is another name for a Hawker) facing back up towards the Market Place. The first written evidence of Salmon Place I can find is an advert in the 'Morpeth Herald' 28 February 1880 for a seed list from John Brown of Woodbine Cottage Salmon Place (my 3G uncle) Salmon Place was recommend for Clearance in 1938 although I found an application in 1944 by Mr. Fred Reed for possession to occupy 1-4 Salmon Place. I found the entry for your Grandmother Margaret starting school on 20 August 1912, father Francis. There is also an entry for Francis 1909 father Francis a miner.

Good luck for the Heritage Fair. I can appreciate the problems with H&S legislation but anything to help promote a sense of Community is worthwhile. Where I live now we have a carnival, music festival and regular events throughout the year involving all the community young and old and reminds me of my childhood in Bedlington. 'We had a terrible week of rain here last week but hope your weather is better in France!' 37C today still 28C at 9.30 fans are on full but still feels hot. 'I was born in 1953 in Cambois, we had a Wilson in our street (Lilly Wilson) but I forget the husbands name. Also a Foster Wilson' Sorry haven't come across them in my tree yet but some of my Henderson relatives lived in Cambois and Barrington. It is awhile since I researched my Wilsons, but hope to do so later this year, still a lot of sorting out of files and have just found a new cousin in Philadelphia. The problems in the UK made it to the french papers too but alongside the problems in Greece and Spain. I retired last year and I agree we are lucky to be able to do so while we are still able to enjoy it. Our children will have to work longer and final salary pensions are a thing of the past. I thought the Millfield just reopened in February, is Sebastians the restaurant above? Rosella Place was still there when I left in 1973 maybe someone else will remember when it was demolised. Wilson

Thank you Keith, Connexions was the name I was thinking of but can't remember Sebastians how long ago was that? I have a feeling the Howard was renamed The Neuk in the 70s when Bower's houses were still there. That area of the Market Place was orignally called Muggers Neuk (Nook) in the 19th Century. Rosella Place was behind Bacci's and I think it was pulled down in the late 70's. Still remember the ice cream from Bacci's we were so lucky to grow up with real Italian ice cream. Wilson

Can anyone tell me when the King's Arms became The Grapes; The Howard changed to The Neuk then The Market Tavern and when The Dun Cow changed to The Millfied and back to the Dun Cow the first time or could be several times! I have a feeling there was another name in there too. Thanks Wilson

Hello Everyone I am a born and bred Bedlingtonian, can trace the Wilsons back to the 1700's and lived most of my life in Bedlington but now live in France so hope I can still be a member of your community. I have helped with a couple of projects for the history society...the shops of Bedlington and recently the public houses so found the comments on the Gardeners Arms useful. My Great Great Grandfather was landlord in 1861 and his father had the Tankerville at that time too. I am also related to 'Monkey Lizzie' from the Barrington. On this subject does anyone know the name of the person responsible for the Bedlington Terrier in the Red Lion? One of my children keeps promising to look but think he forgets after a few prints of Abbot! Fortunately with the internet I can still carry out a lot of research online and if time allows call into Woodhorn on visits back to see my family. I have spent the last couple of weeks trailing through the Census of Bedlingtonshire identifying the inns and beer houses not an easy task trying to read them even with local knowledge and copies of old maps but very interesting seeing how Bedlington has changed over the years. I am still interested in Bedlington today and hope to see a new revamped Market Place with new shops while preserving the beauty of the old buildings. I enjoyed looking at the pictures of the Miners' Picnic supplied by members. I remember the brass band competition and going to the shows it was the highlight of the year when I was young.
