  1. Its a bit late but I got the answer to getting ALL the verges cut to Scandanavian standards, ALL the roads fixed, ALL the roads swept and new white lines put down, ALL the flower beds up to Kew Gardens standards loads of overtime for the council workers............. EASY get the Olympic Torch to be run all over the shire................ SIMPLES

D'oh! why didn't we think of that sooner...

  3. Related but a bit off topic!

What is the effect of using renewable energy, if any? the absorbing or slowing down the wind to turn windmills, absorbing wave energy, absorbing heat from solar panels, thermal pumps etc, All of these things must have some affect on weather trends, patterns etc even if only very minutely. "The butterfly effectâ€.

Energy cannot naturally be created or destroyed! (or so I'm told!) Which of the renewable energy's has the least undesirable side effects, making solar panels is supposed to be quite a dirty process! other processes use things like fibre glass, Kevlar, silicon etc, much of which I'm sure is mined!

Vic - I think you're right, we should be careful before using new technologies, NASA has found raised land surface temperatures especially at night, in a HUGE wind farm in Texas.

    120430152045-large.jpg

Absorbing wave energy has no effect near to the shore, as the energy will dissipate naturally on the shore anyway. We should monitor the effects, but the effects of global warming will probably overshadow them all.

You are correct - Energy cannot naturally be created or destroyed - however it can be transferred to another form, which is the general basis for all energy production. Also making solar panels is a dirty process. We need to invest in these processes to make them cleaner and greener. and yes other processes use things like fibre glass, Kevlar, silicon etc, much of which is mined - but who said mining was wrong???

  4. Crackers, the lot of you! Relying on puffs of wind and the crashing of waves ... poo. What we need is a fuel that is abundant, secure and local, doesn't need to be processed before use, has an age of proven technology behind it, leaves behind no deadly waste, ticks just about all the boxes for employing lots of people, and so on. Oh, and anything that's good for the Chinese should be good enough for us. COAL I say!

And another thing - I don't want to hear all the ninnies here bleating on about how dirty/polluting it is or how unhealthly it is for the workers. Investment in clean coal technology (a small amount compared with the huge sums needed to be spent shielding our giblets from being zapped by the atom rays for 1000s of years); decent face masks will halt 'miners lung'. Do we really want every skyline covered with windmills and even more trampled underfoot by mile upon mile of giant pylons; do we really want our shoreline carpeted with nodding wave/tide machines and then the beaches trampled underfoot by even more pylons? No, I say!

Also, a good plan would be to round-up all those feckless teenagers I identified in another post ... maybe we could call them The Bevan Symptoms Boys ... and draft them down the pit to dig the stuff.

You all know it makes sense!

Coal is a fossil fuel and finite. even the chinese realise this and there are 14 nuclear plants on the mainland and about 27 are in construction. so yes let's follow the chinese! ;-)

  5. How long will Nuclear fuel last?

sorry I should have qualified that statement - At current production levels well over 200 years for the whole planet. That is of course for Uranium.

The extraction of uranium from seawater would generate a 60,000-year supply at present rates, and using fuel-recycling fast-breeder reactors, which generate more fuel than they consume. Breeder reactors could match today's nuclear output for 30,000 years.

Did that answer your question Adam?

  7. It's annoying, isn't it. We have a system where everybody assumes everybody else has a computer and is computer literate. I put myself through evening classes and did a thirty weeks ECDL course just to keep savvy. At the end of the course they told me Windows Vista or 7 was out and some of my training was obsolete now. You just cannot keep up with computer technology

Keith - I agree, there should be more funding for computer training, and not just for the older members of the community. Some kids are being left behind too, and they will need more computer skills in the workplace than ever before.

I may be wrong but are they not still being ran on an evening class basis at the local collage and high schools?

  10. 1) So we can dump nuclear waste in your back garden?

Thats not what I meant, i meant that I'm happy to have a nuclear plant in the area and have loads of wind turbines nearby. Lots of smaller ones, maybe one per house would mean far less dependency on non-renewable energies. Also maybe keep them out to sea or in urban areas, and leave the countryside free of them.

    2) How long will Nuclear fuel last?

At current production levels well over 200 years for the whole planet. Which is why we need to reduce production and use renewables like wind turbines and wave machines and not fossel fuels.

I'd like a planet that my kids, and grandkids can survive on, wouldn't everyone?

Don't get me wrong here, I'm not having a go at miners or what they did, I'm from a family of miners, actually generations of them, and I'm proud of what they did, and the areas that the mines produced, like Ashington and Bedlington, etc. The north east should be proud of it's heritage, it's made us what we are.

All I'm saying is we just need to preserve our fossel fuels for the generations to come, not squander it now.

  11. So you would like to see a nuclear power station at cambois or lynemouth and what about the waste is that not more "Dirty" then coal and also Nuclear is unsustainable, Fact

It wouldn't bother me. neither do wind turbines, but we need a source of power, and if it needs to be in my backyard then fine by me.

Clear coal technology, over 200 years of coal reserves around the UK, so how is it unsustainable?

200 years - so by definition unsustainable - what happens when it runs out? Nuclear + renewables is the only way forward.

1 truck of uranium produces as much energy as 1000 trucks of coal!

  12. The application for the two wind turbines has been withdrawn.

I agree the wind turbines are ineffective by themselves, they need to look to nuclear power in addition to the re-newable energies. Coal is unsustainable, fact.

My family were all miners, and they never wanted anyone following in their footsteps, as it was a hard, dirty way to earn a living.

  13. I was researching my family tree and I found some ancestors in "Rutter's Buildings" in Scotland Gate, Choppington.

Not knowing where they were I found this site and others that mentioned them. I looked at old maps and discovered where they were. On the same site I found another location for Storey's Buildings also in Choppington.

    The site was www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html

If you put in the co-ordinates 425594 583614 on the above site you find Storey's Buildings near the Sleek Burn opposite Willow Bridge, just north of the old Lord Clyde PH (now The Swan).

    post-2961-0-78979200-1342424216_thumb.jp

Incidentally on the same site I found Rutter's Buildings at Scotland Gate which is opposite The Traveller's Rest PH. On the east side of the road, opposite the Community Centre at co-ordinates 425428 584088

    Hope this helps!
