the six t media site gives a relocation date of the 'Cross' as 1782 but doesn't have the reference to its origin.(or a citation to source of that information) the reference to the terrier was rather outlandish but threw it in as a bit of fun!! forgive me. if it was re- erected in its present location in 1782 - where was it before? and it isn't a cross? when was the church refurbished? could it either have been in the grounds and got in the way? or been looked on as something pagan and not right or indeed could it have been a market designator? or perhaps it is older and celebrates some previous event.

that would tie in with what I assumed as regards the dates - am I thinking that the pic shows the cross in a slightly different location from its present site? to me it looks as though it has been moved east and slightly north to its present location?? possibly to prevent further damage from passing steam tractors!!!! it seems very near the edge - if not actually on the present road of today in that picture. late edit - and it is definitely not a cross - nor do I ever think it was!! an obelisk denoting a market place? or even just a bit of ego for whoever funded it?? I am beginning to suspect it has no ancient origin!!

It was way before then - I will go see my mother on Thursday and see if she can recall anything ooooo BUDC many years since I have heard that lol -- I recall the fracas when they built the golf course!!! but I am sure the general 'updating' of the market place was done post war and before the 60's - possibly just new paving and road boundaries etc. but I will see what she can recall. Mum was born in 1928 and was manageress of carricks as well - so she knew a lot of folk -- let me know if there is anything that you can think of that she might be able to shed some light on -- although it depends how she is on the day. maybe we should call in 'Time Team' to see if in 3 days they can find any antiquated thinking within the parish -- or maybe not it would take 10 mins and they couldn't spin that out to an hour even with adverts!!!

Malcolm, I seem to recall that Mr Hall (used to live down from the police station towards the golf course - had a Pyrenean dog and wanted to bury his wife in the garden in an old Anderson shelter as a mausoleum!) had something to do with refurbishing the whole of the market place well before the 70's possibly just post war, and that there was an overall tidying up and realignment of the whole area around the cross then. I will ask my mother, she knew him well and worked in carricks at one time, although her mental faculties after the stroke are not as they were.

came into this late -- but - was Bedlington ever given a charter to be a market town? it could have been exempt due to being within the palatinate of durham but unlikely unless it has special status market crosses tend to be what it says on the tin -- exactly that the things about the cross being related to Cuthbert - most likely and probably the origin of ( the resurgence of ) the church at Bedlington ( I think thinks its a ar earlier site on the high points linked to earsdon and aside shankhouse at cramlington (they all follow that high ridge - as most church sites do) - although the cross is far later - but the coffin - which was touted round the north east for many years would most likely have been placed within the 'church' boundaries (good earner!) I think we are missing a man with a very large white dog to give the answers -- he died many years ago but I seem to recall him telling me he arranged the refurbishment of the market place

if you do take them t beamish - make sure they know what they are!! I have been many yrs and its getting better now but some of the articles they had and had no idea of how they were used but juts made it up!! careful with hydraulic fluid - it is hydroscopic and il will no doubt be almost solid now with all sorts of nasty residuals in - the fire cement will be well past its sell by date but will have reached a stage when (if we are still around) folk can dig it up and marvel at an unknown geologic mass formed a million years ago I remember when petrol stations had a big red thing of redex aside the pump. and most had a paraffin dispensing machine - the garage at Bedlington did -- where do folk get paraffin now for greenhouses etc ?

any recommendations? when I went digital I got a canon 300d (many years ago)- as I had a proper canon that used them canisters of plastic stuff that you took to boots so you could see what ya had taken 2 weeks after the event --- had used the Nikon 601 but went canon as I had a load of lenses - but of course the sigma 70-200 doesn't work a lot of the time - the dreaded error 999999999 mss . any suggestions for a canon 300d lens in the higher focal lengths at a sensible price?? tamron perhaps?? I feel a trip to jessops calling!! does anyone want a sigma 70-200 canon fit for nowt? would rather see it put to use also a 35mm canon body? again free.

I recall you used to be able to buy light socket 'doublers' so you could have light and power -- elf and safety issue as the hot bulb was against a mains cable!!! and the joys of twisted pair cable with rubber sheath and outer twine wrap -- and the rubber used to crumble over time

deet is good but does tend to rot clothing and is NOT water soluble. I have heard a lot about avon soft and seems to work on some but not on others - depends on the individual skin chemistry you have. I would get down for a beer, and my well do so one day, but its over an hours drive for me - so not easy!!

I recall the greggs chicken pie - it could only be eaten upside down!! and also the 'steak bake' which could produce an absolute tsunami of wind!!

interesting article I saw from the royal geographic society a few months back - most kids can't read a map now!! (look at all the grief from folk slavishly following the 'bitch in the box' satnav and getting stuck!!) coupled with the damning report this week about numeracy and literacy, which I was ranting about at uni 20 yrs ago and you have a disaster in the making! but enough of that.... is the black bridge still standing? and are there kippers still for tea??

it makes me wonder now how the present children would cope with our lives then? (outdoor toilets and a tin bath which was hung in the yard outside every house!! manual washing machines in the 'wash house' which had a copper , a poss tub, one of them ridged boards, and the mangle) I despair when I see a group of kids walking along together and none are talking to each other, but all are 'texting' someone else, why bother socialising??? Its even worse when you see folk in their 40's doing the same!!! Those days of a couple of sandwiches and a bottle of 'waters and robson' pop (and delivered to the door by the 'pop' wagon!!!) was a feast for a day out - there was something about the taste of the pop during the course of the day when the bottle ended up with crumbs floating in the pop - food and drink in one!!! is the black bridge still standing??
