Whitley Memorial " Houses"

Featured Replies

I attended. 65-68

did we have 4 houses?

I remember Aiden, Bede and  Cuthbert

did we have a 4th beginning with "D" ?

Frank D

I attended from 1951 to 1957 and there was no house then.

@Frank Dott - messaged my cousins = Henderson family but the latest the yougest was at Whitley was 1961. Our Martin, who left age 11 in 1961, says he has a vaguie memory of the 'house names' but can't recall a fourth name and his memory that the house names were really only used on the annual sports day with the houses competing againsteach other.:iiam:

Hi Frank, I don't know anything about the Whitley memorial as I've had no connection with it personally. However, if you are thinking there might have been a house beginning with the letter D then Dunstan might be a possibility - if you are thinking alphabetically: Aiden, Bede, Cuthbert and Dunstan. They are all saints, though Aidan Bede and Cuthbert have a common denominator - they are Northumberland saints. Dunstan, on the other hand, was a Canterbury saint. However there are possible connections to Northumberland. We have the hamlet of Dunstan (now incorporated in Craster) and of course Dunstanburgh castle. Dunstan became very popular throughout England following his canonization so it's not impossible that the hamlet and castle were named after him.

@Frank Dott  & @Canny lass - asked the question on the Bygone Bedlington group as there are some ex Whitley Memorial pupils.
