Trace family member, shop owner in 1920s

Featured Replies

I am trying to trace a relative who was a shop owner in Bedlington circa 1920s. His neice was Henrietta Sweeney. When her father died in 1st world war she was taken in by her step grandfather John Robinson. The shop owner disowned her as he didn't like her choice of spouse. Trying to compile family tree.

@pat nee McIntyre The only Robinson shop I can recall was the newsagent on Front Street East in the 1960's but no idea if that shop went back to the c1920s. There was an advert published in a 1947 St Cuthbert's Parish Magazine with Robinson's in :-

@pat nee McIntyre a few years back a member, @Reedy, posted a list of pubs that his dad could remember and among the names was the Oddfellows Arms. he also had an old newspaper cutting .

In 2017 a member, @dunlinds, posted info of the pub :-

and  @Canny lass was doing some research in 2022 on something else but in her research she identfied where the Odfellows pub had been located = Front Street East. This is the old map she marked where the pub would have been :-

An old photo naming the Odfellows Arms was found but I can't recall who found it or where it was found. We joined the info from reedy, the old photo, and a Google street view of 2016 to show where it was though to be :-

So is the building still standing? I live in London but maybe one day can get up there!

This is the Google Street View image 2024 but no idea how much the house would have changed since The Odfellows Arms was there:iiam:

I happened to own it (jointly) for quite a few years.  Was going to move in, but never did.  Good sound building: they don't build them like that any more! Goodness, I hope it's "still standing"!

Oh wow. I wonder what happened to it after John Maddison Sweeney left?

Way back in 1992/3, I moved back to Bedlington briefly, and rented a flat (16a) in that building, for a year. It was when it had just been renovated and converted into flats. I then moved away again 🤣
