Headstones, St Cuthbert's Churchyard.

Headstones, St Cuthbert's Churchyard.

Album created by Alan Edgar (Eggy1948) · Updated

In this album we are attempting to identify what the symbols mean on the headstones, and add any other connected info about the headstones.

St Cuthbert's Church in Bedlington can be dated back to the 10th Century and was built on the site of an earlier church. The remains of St. Cuthbert was rested here in 1069, when they were temporarily removed from Durham Cathedral for sanctuary following the Norman Conquest. The church is a Grade 2* Listed Building.

I don't suppose it would be possible to name each photo with the name on the headstone, instead of the number or is that asking too much?

I’ve updated titles where I can make out the carvings. Hopefully it’s not presumptuous using surnames for headstones marked “wife of”.

Does anyone know the date of the oldest headstone here? I love looking for the really old ones. And is the church open during the week? I'd like to visit when I'm next up there.

@Anne Gilbert

@Maggie/915 might be able to tell you. If not then the Bedlington History group should. I believe it was through the History Society that this album was created.
