  1. South Northumberland Radio Group is pleased to announce the award of £9,129 from the Big Lottery Fund. The cash will help the group pay for broadcasting equipment, licences, IT, marketing and music for its station "˜Synergy' which is to be based at 90 Front Street East, Bedlington. The award adds to money and fund pledges from several local parish and town councils, voluntary contributions and the former Wansbeck Council. Said group member John White: "We are absolutely delighted that the Big Lottery Fund sees our initiative as one that will bring major benefits to the community at large. We based our application on a project to provide a genuinely accessible community radio station to serve the population of south east Northumberland. "Now the work begins in earnest to get the studio up and running and to train volunteers for presenting and producing top rate entertaining programmes and all the other associated technical and administrative tasks. "I've lived in the area all my life and it's been my long-term ambition to get this project going. I believe that with the help and support of our many well-wishers we can give this part of the world a radio station of which they can be justly proud," he said.
  2. Dear All I would like to take this opportunity to proudly inform you that Synergy has acquired major funding to allow our project to go forward. Although we have known this for some time official funders protocol would not allow me to actually keep you up to speed. My apologies for that. This post is ahead of any official press release as I`ve valued your support the last 14 months or so & I thought you should be amongst the very first to know. And so it begins...
  3. Dear All I`m pleased to be able to firm up details on our proposed meeting. It will be held in the Salvation Army Hall on Wednesday November 24th at 6.30pm. We would like to take this opportunity to relay the thoughts & plans we have for our project & of course recruit those interested in getting actively involved with us. Tea & coffee will be available. To enable us to guage needs for such could you please let me know if you might attend. PMs would be great to do this. It would be brilliant to talk to you. See you on the 24th.
  4. Thank you Blank. Much appreciated. Hope you can make the meeting in November.
  5. LHR Many thanks. It`s been a while...
  6. Malcolm. The driver of the first X33 that turned up hopes that yourself & others can attend our public meeting in November. For everyones convenience the Salvation Army Hall has a bus stop right outside & I will stop. Promise!
  7. Dear All I would like to thank everyone for the recent posts to the thread I began all those many months ago. I`m rather taken aback by the flurry of activety. I`m sorry if it appeared to some that time has gone by without anything seemingly happening with our project. But that could not be further from the truth. Myself Neal & Colin have been endlessly applying to funding streams to get Synergy off the ground. But it seems we have not been as lucky as some. You may remember our luck changed for the better, about a year ago, when we were kindly offered premises in Bedlington This spurred us on to keep going. For that we are so grateful. My original reason for posting tonight was to tell you that we would like to hold an open public meeting sometime in November to discuss our project. We would probably try to get the Salvation Army hall. Would you to come? Keep the comments coming please.
  8. Thanks for your support Merlin. We appreciate it very much!
  9. I agree with your thoughts on the restrictions Malcolm. But stations do get by. eg. one we started in Alnwick (Lionheart Radio) is still going, even in these austere times. The restrictions were set down in the original 1990 Broadcasting act & this has been amended recently http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si2010/draft/em/ukdsiem_9780111488089_en.pdf but as you can see by sect. 7.9 the advertising capping still applies. Hopefully we will get to the point where we will have to consider this as a problem to overcome.
  10. Malcom. I think the commercial cap you refer to is when a station is successful in obtaining a full time 5 year licence to broadcast. To protect the advertising revenue of other local media eg. the likes of The Morpeth Herald or Newspost Leader etc. say, Ofcom state the income raised by advertising cannot exceed monies gathered from other fundings such as grants etc. In essence it`s a bit like match funding. As to your first bit Malcom I can only really comment on SNRG`s intentions over the last 2 years: We will be based in Bedlington (due to the kindness of a local businessman) Perform 2 or 3 28 day test FM/online broadcasts Apply for a 5 year fulltime licence Put Bedlington at the centre for a change Thanks to everyone for the supportive thoughts.
  11. Cympil & Monsta: be rest assured we are still hanging in there. All is not yet lost!
  12. Denzel. I have no problems with that at all. Many thanks. Keep it coming!
  13. Thanks for your words of support Jim. I`ll pass on your thoughts at our next steering group meeting.
  14. We discussed the internet radio idea a while ago & decided we didn`t want Synergy to begin life as a souless automated, impersonal music station like many others. Music will be an important part of our output. But just as important will be the open, community participation aspect. Also, done properly, stand alone Internet Radio is not cheap & is also a nightmare to administer. When we do an RSL it becomes much easier: it has a one off fee for the length of the licence. Happily the Govt. has recently made it clear that FM is not going to be turned off for community broadcasters. The Metro radio`s etc of this world will lose it only when 52% or more of the country has bought a digital set. Many thanks for the suggestions. Keep `em coming!
  15. Plans for a community radio station serving South East Northumberland have had a welcome boost from Wansbeck MP Ian Lavery says one of the team behind the scheme, Colin Heathcote. "As chairman of the South Northumberland Radio Group (SNRG) I met Ian to give him a briefing about the proposed station - to be called Synergy. He fully supported what we are trying to do saying that a community radio station would be a great asset for the area. He thought it was a "˜very exciting project' and wished us luck in our efforts to raise the £60,000 we need to launch a full-time station. Our first target is £10,000 to enable us to carry out an initial four-week experimental restricted service licence broadcast from a studio in Bedlington. We have been offered premises for a peppercorn rent but have to meet all the public utility and equipment costs together with the licence and performing rights fees. We've major funding applications pending & I've also talked to several parish and town councils in the area about our plans and, to date, we've had money and funding pledges from four of them. As experienced community radio technicians and/or broadcasters, we are committed to providing a genuinely accessible local community radio station. And local interest in what we are trying to do is building: an introductory piece on the www.bedlington.co.uk site about our plans has attracted 1,300 hits. Prime Minister David Cameron talks about a "˜Big Society' and how he wants people to play a bigger role in the way communities function. We feel that a community radio station could help act as a catalyst to wider involvement by the public in what goes on in their areas. Our objective is to broadcast professionally produced, entertaining programmes that will include music to suit all ages and tastes, interviews with community representatives and speech based contributions from local organisations. The broadcasts will be available via the FM frequency, and on line. Extensive community information will also be posted on the SNRG website: www.snrgroup.co.uk The area's principal sources of local information are local newspapers and magazines. The radio station would complement these with a round-the-clock service that could offer immediate and rapid delivery of vital local information. If anybody is interested in our plans, they can contact john.white@snrgroup.co.uk
  16. £300 is the maximum amount Parish/Town Councils have given us so maybe it is a capped amount. We are grateful for any amount given as it gets us that little bit nearer to that test broadcast for SE. Northumberland with Bedlington, for once, being at the centre of it all! We know times are hard but we think the project is achievable & believe the benefits for our area, especially Bedlington, are immense! I`m heartened by the fact you also recognise this. That sort of support has kept us going over the last 2 years. Many thanks.
  17. £11k is the first amount we are aiming for to stage a test broadcast. £57k is the estimated cost to get us to being able to apply for a full time licence. Your words of encouragement & support are valued as ever Monsta!
  18. South Northumberland Radio Group update. Following our funding requests to Town/Parish Councils in our proposed broadcast footprint, we were requested to attend a number of their meetings to enlighten them on our radio project. As a result of this Newbiggin & West Bedlington Councils have kindly pledged £300 each, with at least one other about to do so. Pegswood, as previously reported, have already done so. Other larger bids are being processed at the minute. So we are getting there, slowly but surely! If anyone has any fund raising ideas please feel free to contact me. It would be great to hear from you. Or indeed if, like the councils, you are part of an organisation who would like to know more about Synergy FM, let me know & one of us will gladly come & chat to you.
  19. SNRG update. As I mentioned in a previous post we sent out numerous letters to try & attract funding for a test broadcast. Started well with Pegswood & Newbiggin councils giving/pledging support. Rejections from Blyth & Seaton Valley councils on the grounds of the radio project was not based in, or primarily for, their respective areas. Other council funding applications, including Bedlington TCs, pending. As the station will be based in Bedlington I hope this might help when we are considered by them. 41 letters sent to County Councillors: 3 replies. Our NCC Community Chest Scheme application, for £10k has been rejected this time but will be reconsidered in the next round. Apologies for not being able to give a very positive report back.
  20. As I`ve pointed out licencing is a major cost factor for any test broadcast. We want the station to become a permanent feature for our area. So basing it at the college is not an option. In fact that would increase costs. Remember this: http://www.bedlington.co.uk/2009/08/bedlington-base-for-county-radio/ The kind offer of a long term Bedlington studio area, by a local businessman, was an offer that could not be refused. I think our town deserves to have this service based in it. I believe it would greatly benefit the local community & businesses alike, putting Bedlington at the centre of something positive for a change!
  21. Monsta. It`s an expensive business. It costs £500 alone just to apply to Ofcom for the 28 day licence. Even then you might fail to get one! Other licences have to be paid for the daily use of music to; ie. PRS, PPL & MCPS as well as the Radio & Telegraphy licence for the use of the transmission equipment. As for using the college in Ashington; surely you are not suggesting that Synergy FM, broadcasting to SE Northumberland, should be based some where other than here in Bedlington!
  22. Thanks threegee. This is something we would go for if we acquired a five year, full time licence. At the minute we can only commit as far ahead as the 28 day test RSL broadcast. Then at least one more after six months, before applying for the big one. Please keep you suggestions coming though. They are always welcome, as I have run out of ideas to raise funding.
  23. SNRG update. We believe that approximately £11,000 would be the cost of providing our 1st test broadcast. Prior to Xmas I wrote to every County Councillor, Parish & Town Council, in our proposed broadcast footprint, to see if they might help us financially. 50+ letters. Following our attendance at Pegswood Parish Council last Monday, a donation arrived through my letter box two days later. Thank you Pegswood. Excellent start! Hopefully lots more to come!
  24. We're working on a grants policy for the town council in Bedlington. The aim of this is to help people who want to organise their own activities... We still want to build a quality, Bedlington based county radio station. We`ve got the studio site, thanks to a benevolent Bedders benefactor. Getting funding over the last 2 years has proved near impossible.
