Hi folks! Mickey, your story is really sad but fascinating at the same time. I wouldn't want to steal your thunder, but can I relate a very similar story? Around 1954,when I was aboot 10 years aad,my older Brother, born on the same day,was aboot 13 yrs aad. One day he came in wi a babby jackdaa [as yi dae like..],and we caaled him "Jackie". He was put in a cardboard box under the kitchen table, for a few days,ti get he's strength up,and he's feathers sorted oot.[they were aal scraggy and wet wi being blaan aboot in thi wind and rain.] As time went by,he quickly grew inti adulthood, being fed aal thi time from me Faatha digging the big back garden,at Hollymoont Square, and feeding him wi worms etc. He went oot in the early mornin' when ma Faatha went ti thi pit,and used ti come back and forward aal day lang,as soon as yi went inti thi garden. Noo!...wa neighbours used ti [smiling........!],tell me Mutha "wi had ya bord in wa bedroom again this mornin...on the dressing table....tryin ti pinch trinkets..."![gaan in through open windaes in the summer days!] A bet they were really narked, but didn't waant ti faal oot wi me Mutha! Jackie came in ivry neet and went inti he's box hese'll When aboot a year and a haaf went by,me Brother decided he wud mek a wood cage for him,wi plenty room ti move aroond in,and perches ti stand on. Away aroond ti Smail'ey's shop, and one plywood tea-chest later,he started wi a pit hammer and pit nails,ti mek the cage. Me,in the meantime went wi thi lads doon ti the Barn'tn tip,ti get bullrushes,ti sell aroond thi neighbours, for ornamental purposes.[we got nae pocket money so we had ti work for owt we got!]...a was aboot 11 yrs aad...a bit more.....maybe! Wat 'rushes we had left,we used ti soak in parrafin, and light them, and throw them up in the air,etc etc...generally just playing with them. Whey, this day,aa came yem aal excited,wi a greet armload of bullrushes, the most we'd ivvor gotten, cos ye were risking ya life in the slecky waata,ti get thim, when yi couldn't swim!! A remember throwin' the wesh-hoose door oppen, and shoutin' in ti me Brother,[who was on the floor hammerin away at the cage..],"Youngin',luk wat aav got...!" A also remember vividly,HIM,shoutin'..."shut thi door man...."....then me glancin' up ti the shelf, and seeing Jackie taking flight,at precisely thi same moment that he kicked the door shut, with he's foot. Aam shudderin reet noo, recalling seeing Jackie being trapped by his neck, near thi top of thi door, and falling lifelessly,to the floor. A ran like a rabbit, inti the hoose,up thi stairs, and inti thi bathroom, locking the door behind me,wi me Brother screaming at me he was going to kill me... A stayed there till me Mutha came and made me come oot. We buried him at the bottom of the garden, beside our other pets that had gone. As thi years passed, and my two sons were very young, living at Stakeford,we had another Jackie, for about a year, and I canna mind what happened to him....we had countless birds of all breeds, brought to us by the local kids, cos they knew we looked after them. At one time we had a baby song thrush, and a babby sparrow,at the same time ,kept in the same cage. As they started to grow, the thrush used ti cuddle up ti the spuggie,wi it's beak open, thinkin thi spuggie was it's mutha! When it was fliggyin' time,we had to gradually stop the hand-feeding process, and take them roond ti thi allotment,ti try and get them into the wild, safely. They stayed in thi hedge for weeks, and every time me Wife went roond wi thi weshing,ti hang it oot on the line, they would both fly doon ti me Wife's feet, beaks open, and chirping away like hell! Noo,we've had a handicapped herring gull, who has one deformed wing,[canna straighten it oot],for nearly two and a half years. He's gone through two moults, and is just startin his third moult noo, smaal feathers aal owa wa garden...yi cud mek a duvet wi thi amount he chucked oot last year!! He struts aroond thi garden, chases the sparrow-hawk ,the neighbours cat,and the crows and jackdaws oot,but leaves the small birds alone. He feeds cheap dog food off wa dog's food knife,by hand,wi his head aboot a foot off little black Jess's head,[wa labrador /cross],who feeds at the same time![one for him........and one for him......!] It's better than telly-watching,when yi see the antics of these two in the garden! It's very committing looking after animals and birds like this. A think we must be crackers!!

Miracles can be implemented immediately........!.....the impossible may take a wee bit longer....!!!!! God is in an Analogue domain....the Analogue/digital incompatibility displays it's weaknesses at the Pearly "Gates"......Truth tables go haywire....... ........God needs re-inventing....!

Hi Maggie! It's a 1960's Royal Enfield 500cc single, Cafe Racer, from the days when you put a record [45 rpm vinyl disc...for the unititiated!],on to the Jukebox,in your local cafe, then raced through a set route around the town, and had to get back to the cafe, before the record finished playing. Considering most records averaged just over two minutes,if you were lucky,it was a feat in itself!....and one of the reasons why bikes are now restricted to 125cc for learners,we have to wear crash helmets, etc, and speed limits rediculously slow in some parts ...because of the tragic results of some of these activities. I know all about it,and watched my mates do it,[and strangers in other towns..],but never did it myself,it was a cult follower thing, and I have never in my life, been a "follower"...I am a Leo...!! [i do my own thing..] Ye aalwis get a story heor,ye knaa ,Maggie,a canna just answer ye wi two words!

Hi,Maggie! As I think,[not sure!],I mentioned was it not the Archbishop of Canterbury,or sum very high Church official,[sure it was him!],when the big Tsunami struck and wiped out thousands of people,This Church man said the catastrophe actually made him question his own faith in God. I think he must have been, like all of us,so overwhelmed with grief for these poor people, that the remark slipped out,and was plastered all over the media, the next day. He then appeared live on a debate, and again, said how he felt, without shame, about his faith. This is checkable, and not just wild journalistic licence, this was from the nag's gob! Disasters like that must surely make everyone wonder where God was, but,as I always say to my Wife,ex-catholic,with no faith in God whatsoever after the tsunami,...."Suffer little Children..to come unto Me.." That is the famous answer,to get God off the hook!

Heh heh,Adam, that soonds like it came stryght from aan aad pitmmen's gob!! Methinks some things rub off onto wa offspring withoot wi realising it!! Nice one Marra![ we aal knaa it's ownly a bit o' banter....divvent wae?]

Spot-on again Maggie! You will always have the negatives, part of physics.....pity,I always see a glass half-full! Too many dooners,we only have one innings,we shud be grateful for having the best County in Britain..! The only people who pull it doon, are those who haven't even been aroond and seen hoo luvly it is...away from the pub! Was waaking little black Jess doon the Wanny river the other day,[another luvly place for families wi kids],and got on,as ye dae, taakin ti a stranger with her little dog. Luvly lass, she had her own place over in Spain, somewhere, for a lot of years, and has recently sold it and started to holiday in this Country, with a touring caravan. She and her husband were blown away with the Lake District, for starters, but didn't know where the best places north of Ashington were. They were going to go up the east coast of Scotland,in the summer, but my Wife and I advised them, that it has to be the Cheviots ,first, cos they liked walking, then go up the West Coast of Scotland. We toured this country length and breadth, for over twenty years,[never been abroad,or even on a plane, except Concorde, but that's another story!] and have never had the inclination to want to travel to Spain,or wherever, and spend a fortnight in heat so intense that it would kill me,and lie lazily by a pool,or the beach. What suits one, doesn't suit another, but when I used to go up the Glencoe pass,or go over to Skye,or Mull,or Fort William,it used to beat me,when I came back to work, and marra's who had been abroad, had a fortnights bad weather,or it was too hot,and they had to stay in the shade...usually a pub! Me being a tee-totaller,and a walker and hiker, who loves nature, failed to see the attraction of other countries, when ours is the most beautiful, cos you can go into it without an armed police guard,or don't need to be a mountain climber!!

Howway Tony, leave the pits oot o' it in that context,if it wasn't for the miners, none of you would have had ships to sail in,only canoes, and you wouldn't have any bullets to fire........ Coal fuelled the industrial revolution,at a cost of thousands of miner's lives, including kids as young as six years old,in the old days. Let's have a bit of peace and respect, and carry on argying just the syem.....!!

Luk lads, aam an aad pitman,in case ye didn't knaa.............!! In a hostile environment, where ya marras were getting injured,[or "jaaped"],and killed, every other day, which all went unnoticed, tensions sumtimes ran high doon there, and ye cud have a gud faal-oot wi sumbody, and five minutes later ye were sharing a pinch of snuff,as if nowt had happened...nae huffs,or "lips" as we referred ti them!. Noo that me feet's on solid grund ,wi a gud "top",a like ti think tha's nae reason for tensions ti run high! So aav been enjoying the crack here, especially Aad Sym,[you're hilarious,Sym,you remind me of one or two aad Marra's from me pit days..gud cracks, but they couldn't half turn the crank-handle!!] Let's keep the debate gaaning withoot grief, and aam nearly converted here, even though aam not politically-motivated, tha's a LOT of sense in the kipper's policies, that aav read aboot...if only they wud carry them oot ti the hilt! We gotta stand up ti Brussels...but a really think it's too late, too much power has been lost, and too much damage done. Whey that's my smaa' two-pennorth,fo' wat it's worth...!

It's queor,ye knaa, but aal thi folk aa knaa, who are "Born-again-Christians"[Evangelists-Billy Graham followers],winna even listen ti my theory or beliefs, even though I only make them known when required, such as on this discussion.I never start on aboot religion to them, but they always try to convert me to theirs, saying My beliefs are of the devil.. [....oh!..there's one we haven't touched on!!] But every Jehovah's Witness I have encountered, usually at my doorstep..!!,DO at least, let me explain what I think aboot the whole affair. The answer I got from a few of the Evangelists, upon me questioning the bible, was,"we don't question the Bible..we accept God's word without question.."! When I suggested that I felt that I was as good a christian as a lot of hypocrytical people who are church-goers on the face of it,to achieve social status and acceptance, like our Politicans,etc....cos I will do owt to help anyone, and wouldn't harm anybody...[unless they harmed me..."eye for an eye.."!],I was told that helping people doing good etc, doesn't make you a christian. So what does?....I asked! "You need to commit yourself to Christ in front of a witness"....IN FRONT OF A WITNESS!! Can I not commit myself in private?....no,I will still go to hell..! Whey aav telt ye aal,a believe Jesus waaked this earth,he was a top bloke, did gud, like me,but he was visitor from a far off land!! "..and there were giants in those days....and they came from far-off lands....."[never been explained...that one...1 Noo!..aboot this here Devil! My young Son is very well-read,and educated in lots of subjects,a lot which has been self-gleaned. He tells me that Satan was ,in fact ,a "fallen Angel"..[not being a feathery sort-just a bloke in a band of others, with different ideas, didn't conform, was cast oot... A dinna believe in any angels, but a dae believe in the spirit world,[which is regarded as being Satanic,by those whom I know to be "born-again" One friend, shuddered and reprimanded me when I said I had been to the spiritualist chapel one night....... "You shouldn't go there,it's of the devil.."..... Aam 70 yrs aad, who's ganna tell me what a shud or shuddn't dae wi me aan life?!! Having said "believe",tek that ti mean, aam interested,in the supernatural, but a sit reet in the middle, and winna commit mesel to owt like the true "believers" dae!! Aam a mekkin' sense heor noo?

I think there was a lot of Opium and other recreational substances, knocking around,in them days, folk who were high as kites stood on soap-boxes later on,and told tales of wondrous things and places they had been and seen...on the backs of snorting fiery dragons!
-
Very interesting links,Pete, but, like everything else which we are discussing here, written by man,and man's theories...which boils down to the fact nobody really knows, and everyone just either researches somebody else's theories,or invents their own, like me! It's nice to have an image in your head of how you think it was back then, cos the likes of me,not being an atheist, who believes in Jesus, and the good that he did, still have a faith, that all this didn't happen by accident...even the spacemen had to be created! Now today they were on about the big bang that happened, billions of years ago, that created our universe.....I definately don't accept that theory! There we go!....the most intelligent, skilled ,experienced folk on the planet, our scientists, can create a big bang..!!..a nuclear one,but still they only say what they THINK happened!! By,aam an aakwaad bugga in me ways of thinking sumtimes!

By hell! [no pun!],what a difference is shown between the aad Whitley Schyuul, and Grammar schyuul educashuns!! Fascinating stuff here ,lads, aam learning by the minute, even though the theory of men in feathery wings remain in my mind to be complete misinterpretations,of what actually happened,in biblical times,by peasants,[or even intelligent people],who would never have been able to understand what they were witnessing.! A few years ago,[maybe a GUD few years ago,]a helicopter crashed in Aborigine land, somewhere very remote,[Ahem...so I read!!]... ....and the local tribesmen were on their knees worshipping it...they thought it was their God come to visit them......pretty much the same as Jesus walking around the place doing gud deeds for the folks. Something else puzzles me,and mind, aam not so well-educated as ye lads and lasses, but a hae half a brain,ti think wae,and that is.... ..if Jesus was born in the manger, and recognised to be the Son of our Lord God,by all the people who travelled from far off lands, why the jump from a baby,to an adult being crucified? I was never taught anything about the whole of his life,on earth, and I mean the whole of his life, and I have never seen anything in the Bible, which chronicles his lifetime acheivements, other than the famous ones!! Do I need to go back to Bible-reading classes think ye?!!

Heh heh! Happy days eh,Maggie?...nice to look back on!

The Heron family lived opposite my family in Hollymount Square, and Mrs Heron [Peg] was my Mother's very good friend. She would give me a thruppeny-bit for gaan up ti Carricks the bakers for a broon fadge and a scrrrrrrribona sammidge cyek!!![emphasis on the rolled "r"'s..!] Me Mutha wud mek me tek the money bak ti Mrs Heron, sayin if ye canna dae a gud torn for nowt,ye canna dae it at aal!

Simple Pete! Whey,a wudn't say gettin' sucked in was the reet way ti luk at it,more of thra'ain' off the blinkers that ye've worn since ye sucked ya dummy! [not YE,Pete, figure of speech!] The God thread is covering aal this debate aalriddy,so it's pointless repeating me opinions, but suffice ti say,we gotta look to further horizons, and not believe ivrythin' we've been brainwashed wi,since we were born! What was proven to be not true,Pete?..an' WHO.supplied the proof?!.[ye got me puzzled theor, naebody's claimed owt to BE true!!...we only put forward wor opinions, and theories, and we either agree,or disagree, simple as that!] Ye believe the Bible in it's entierity, withoot question,or ye have other beliefs, like me,disnae mek me any less of a man, only less of an ignorant man! [ignorant as in dictionary-not derogatory!] As I keep saying......Time will tell!![but a wish thi bugga wud hurry up afore aa dae,an' aam not heor ti see it!]
-
There's me tellin' ivry bugga a meet, when aam oot wi little black Jess,[me four-legged little darlin'!],that thi Bedlintin forum site is a great peaceful place ti spend an 'oor or two.....wi nae insultin' behavior etc.......... ......let's tek a lesson from the God thread, aboot having a democratic debate!!
