  1. This lady also hid in a broom cupboard in the Houses of Parliament. Then she could say her residence for the census was Parliament even though she could not vote. Tony Benn has put a plaque on the back of the door. Several people in the area have said they were related to this lady. This year is important. Inspirational, to fight for a cause that you believe in and to die. Her grave in Morpeth says just that. Sad that the jockey suffered but interesting that he paid tribute to her.
  2. Ellen Mitchell told the tale at the Bedlington History Society. She was president. She was left with a neighbour, while her mother went to Morpeth. The funeral was a big event in London and then in Morpeth.

  4. Not at all Keith. There is an argument that she did not intend to die and had a return ticket. Either way suicide or accident. People suffer. Was it for the greater good? Horrible things were happening to these ladies.
  5. Believe this Scottish Dance team were celebrated country wide. Well Done
  6. She died 100 years ago this year. People must be related to her. The church yard in Morpeth has her grave. She gave her life for a cause she believed in.
  7. Sadly we are all to soon forgotten. A memory of hers was being left by her mother in 1913. Her mother was attending the funeral of Emily Wilding Davison. Another topic I feel!
  8. Seems there was talk of a shopping centre in the past.
  9. The Red Lion are about to get the Mordue Breweries Radgie Gadgie. What is not to like about controversy.
  10. Maggie/915 posted a topic in Talk of the Town
Memories of the films I saw in Bedlington are too many to mention. Having just been to see Django Unchained at the Tyneside Cinema I am very happy to remember the tanner rush at the station and many many cowboy films Tarantino has paid homage to Mel Brooks and the whole 'genre'! With touches of Pulp Fiction!
  11. How about Bob Dylan 1965 ish Santana 75 or 76 Then there was Eric Clapton with Muddy Waters in 1978 Dire Straits on the day John Lennon died. They were good times. Bring back the Vinyl Maybe we are just getting old but it beats Spotify!
  12. This venue needs saving it seems. Makes me wonder how many people have memories of concerts. My first concert was a strange one 'The Hollies and Roy Orbison' sharing the bill. Everyone listened to Roy Orbison but for the Hollies It was people screaming so loudly you could hear nothing at all. Possibly1964
  13. Old mine working can also be a problem. Subsidence, old shafts etc. Sometimes no one knows they are there! Water water everywhere is a good topic, even though it was not meant literally.
  14. Maybe the word should have been Lisk. Trial and error. Strangely my Grandmothers generation used to decide each week whether they were ' in the band or out' basically to describe arguments and disagreements. Either way thanks to everyone, who has so effectively found out information. 'In the band or out' A good talking point
  15. Bedlington History Society is the last Monday in the month at The Coffin Chapel. Last night was the English Language with reference to Northumbria. It seems we may have had an important part to play.
  16. Instead of going on line, go and see Django Unchained, it is Pulp Fiction meets Mel Brooks and Blazing Saddles. Excellent
  17. Well done Keith. Anyone heard the word 'kist' to describe the top of the leg where it meets the body. Keep it clean.
  18. Water water everywhere. Anyone noticed the graveyard water, just down from Westridge. Gravestones floating. Anything to do with the new houses! Have the developers put in the right drainage. Will they compensate when the old houses flood.
  19. When looking for Christmas presents it was agreed we were 'spoaching' Obviously Santa Claus had a problem
  20. Waitrose a small bijou shopping centre and undercroft car parking
  21. A good day has got to be breakfast at The Red Lion and then Don Lynn's for sly cake. Forget Rasputin and the World
  22. Some very clever people in Bedlington Well Done
  23. Love it who to put in the balloon and who to throw out. Present company accepted
