  2. Mike Irvine Sad to hear this he was a teacher at Whitley Memorial when I was there early 1950's. Nice bloke, I was never in his class but he took sports classes for the lads, mainly football. Manage Louise Todd He was a great teacher and a great fella. R.I.P. Mr Hall. Peter Oliver He was one of my teachers at the Whitley Memorial School in the late 50s and 10, 20years afterwards if I bumped into him on the front street he would greet me by name and I don’t think I-was the only ex-pupil he remembered, lovely man and great teacher, R.I.P Matty.
  3. If you can't get down to Blyth and want a copy of the mural that I posted from Google street view then I am sure we can get it to you via your niece. Is your niece on the local Facebook groups - Bygone Bedlington - Past Times (just change it's name from sixtownships) ?
  4. Eric was originally from Shop Row and went to Barrington CP school same time as me - 1953 to 1960. Bedlington Station secondary modern school - 1960 -1965. 'A pit when he left school but then went out with, and married a Bebside lass - Kathleen Popely and moved to Bebside. I think the first house he lived in at Cowpen was the street just past the Sydney Arms pub = Cowpen Road. No idea where he moved to after that. Union Street is where the old Wallaw cinema ( now Wetherspoons) used to be. Going down Union Street, passing Wetgerspoons on your right the mural is just a 'gud hockle' up the road on the left.

  10. @Canny lass - Sweden has come up with a different Xmas present :- AIK: The Swedish club selling ex-captain Nils-Eric Johansson's DNA Nils-Eric Johansson played for Bayern Munich, Blackburn, Leicester and AIK in a 20-year playing career What's your favourite piece of football memorabilia? An autograph? Maybe a shirt worn by your favourite player? How about the DNA of your club captain? That is exactly what Swedish champions AIK are offering this Christmas. For 3,499 Swedish krona (£307) fans can buy the crystallised DNA of club legend Nils-Eric Johansson, who was forced to retire in February because of a heart defect. The 38-year-old's genetic make-up comes in a test tube and lasts for 500 years. "It's like Jurassic Park!" Johansson tells BBC Sport. "In 500 years, you might see a lot of Johanssons running around, who knows?" Johansson says technically he could be cloned, but a section of the DNA is removed to prevent "illicit or illegal behaviour". "It is not 100% me; it is 99%. That 1% is very important for my own sake and protects my copyright to the DNA," says the former Bayern Munich, Blackburn and Leicester defender. "You would not be able to put my DNA on a crime scene for instance, as it would not match perfectly, so you could tell it wasn't me." He jokes: "[If you cloned me] it would probably be right-footed instead of left-

  18. On the Bedlington Facebook groups there has only been one photo, that I know, of an old Bedlington Cricket Club team photo. This image, marked reserve team, was posted with the date 1911:-
  19. Checking on the FreeBMD genealogy site for any registered births, between 1840 & 1870, for the name James King only returns one record. Checks for Joseph & Elizabeth King (using 1860 through to 1910 only return records for those names in 1891, 1903, 1905 & 1910. The Bedlington area registrar's office for the 19th century was Morpeth - approximately 7 miles from Bedlington so it's not unusual for the registration of births, deaths and marriages only to be done if and when the family visited the town where the registrar's was located.
