Did you know Bob was a singer in a group? When he was an apprentice!
-
Can I take it this is taken form the colliery end and Shiney Row is on the left. cheers
-
The photo dates from 1906 but I have another reference which states 1920. On the left is another pit head, could this be the John shaft? i.e. Photo taken looking northwards?
-
I think you may have cracked it

Photo from Evan Martin book Bedlingtonshire Remembered. Thompsons Store was opposite The North Terrace and would have been used by many of the families in the houses around Doctor Pit.
-
Back view of the John Shaft at the Bedlington Doctor Pit which was taken before the colliery was closed.

In this photo taken in 1965 are left to right Ron Kinghorn, Mick Mills, unsure, Jack Cramer and Bob Napier. Taken outside the electrical workshop.

About 1965, and shows where the damaged cables from the machines underground were stored prior to being loaded onto reels to be sent to Ashington Workshops. The job took place first thing every morning and was normally carried out by apprentices in all weathers. When job was finished it was off to the canteen! In the background, the John Shaft, airlock, lamp cabin and winder.

Probably one of the best photos taken of Doctor Pit. It was taken by Bill Ward Photographer in Bedlington, I believe. Bought this photo, in a frame, from him many years ago.

Shows the John upcast shaft with Telephone Row in the background. The lamp cabin is shown in front of the air lock and the winding engine room on right side of the photo which was taken about 1965. Eddie Davison was one of the winder men at this time.

Taken from top of headgear about 1965 and shows Colliery Managers office left side of entrance door. Engineers offices at the back. Building on right is the warehouse.

I see no names on this photo. I think I can name quite a few in the next few days,

Thanks I was not aware of another Raymond Johnston. My brother had bright ginger hair, guess what his name was? It's now very white and like a wire brush.

George Campbell is No 33 on this photo. Recently, I sent George, who now lives in Scotland, a copy of this photo. Needless to say he was very happy to get a copy after all these years. George responded with some comments about the photo. George comments that most of the boys in the photo would be aged 13/14 years old and are still wearing short trousers.
George provided following information:
# 26 is Sylvia Golding (Maureen Curry was a year younger)
# 34 is Herbert Nicholson
The following pupils are missing from the photo for some reason:
Mary Snaith (Netherton)
Ella McLean
Mary Wilton (may have gone to musical college)
Peter Leithard (Netherton)
The pupils which came from Netherton Colliery School when it closed are numbers 5, 12, 13, 14, 15, 18, 19, 34, 29, 30 in the photo.
