Bedlingtonian Posted December 16, 2014 Report Posted December 16, 2014 (edited) Is Bedlington a dementia friendly community? Recently I attended a 'Dementia Friends' information session at Cramlington. I would recommend the sessions to anyone who has any concerns regarding their relatives or friends. ( Further details can be found at https://www.dementiafriends.org.uk/ ) Five things you should know about dementia: 1. Dementia is not a natural part of ageing2. It is caused by diseases of the brain. The most common being Alzheimer's3. It's not just about losing your memory - it can affect thinking, communicating and doing everyday tasks4. It is possible to live well with dementia5. There is more to a person than the dementia With support, people with dementia can and do take an active role in life. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=9KBlXb3j2Q8 Edited December 16, 2014 by Bedlingtonian
Malcolm Robinson Posted December 17, 2014 Report Posted December 17, 2014 Almost certainly Bedlingtonian, Steven at Mind Active sees to that!
Malcolm Robinson Posted December 17, 2014 Report Posted December 17, 2014 Also the new therapies centre at Vulcan place is going to be doing associated stuff.
Bedlingtonian Posted September 7, 2018 Author Report Posted September 7, 2018 A Dementia Friends session was held at Bedlington Community Centre earlier today and there was a poor turnout as far as the residents, businesses and service providers of Bedlington were concerned. The event was hosted by MP Ian Lavery and Helen Williams of the Alzheimer's Society and I am sure all those in attendance will now have a better understanding of how they can help those living with dementia. Over 2.5 million people have become Dementia Friends. You could be one too! https://www.dementiafriends.org.uk/ 2
Bedlingtonian Posted November 28, 2019 Author Report Posted November 28, 2019 I have a family history that stems from a community of Bedlington Miners who have always supported the Labour Party. I am however , not a fan of our MP Ian Lavery. I also do not know a miner who supports him. I do respect him if he has registered as a Dementia Friend and if it was not a publicity stunt then I applaud him.
Alan Edgar (Eggy1948) Posted December 11, 2019 Report Posted December 11, 2019 Don't know of any of my relatives that have been diagnosed with dementia but I see the local care homes say there have expert care for people with dementia : - Barchester Meadow Park Care Home Choppington Road, Bedlington NE22 6LA https://www.carehome.co.uk/carehome.cfm/searchazref/10004525MEAB Hartford Court Care Home Cumbrian Road, Cramlington NE23 1DA https://www.carehome.co.uk/carehome.cfm/searchazref/70331 1

I would recommend that you first visit the home and ask questions to reassure yourself that the home has 'expert care'. If you become a Dementia Friend it will aid your understanding of the illness and may assist you to decide what you need to consider. My mother had dementia and my mother-in-law now has dementia.
