  1. The tills were ringing yesterday as Lidl opened their brand new store in Bedlington to mixed but mostly positive reactions. The development provoked protests in May last year when a willow tree much loved by a group of residents was felled. Traffic disruption during the build also caused local residents to voice their anger across social media. The new store is now open however, and employing up to 40 locals. Speaking on Facebook, local resident Marjorie Glass said, "Impressive. It was full of shoppers yesterday, in the midst of that nasty weather. Hope it's very successful and brings folks into Bedlington." Lidl employee Donna Clark, after her shift said, "Can honestly say, after a 10 hour shift, I'm worn out! It's nice to know it's all been worth it and people are happy with the store and the efforts of all the staff today" Others were optimistic but had reservations. Olive Maddigan said, "Just hope we don't lose morrisons as Lidl is great but some things in Morrisons are great too". A new mini-roundabout was recently installed at the junction with Schalksmuhle Road with the aim of reducing congestion caused by the expected increase in traffic to the store and surrounding area. It is hoped that with this new development and other proposals like it residents will be encouraged to shop within the town centre instead of travelling to supermarkets elsewhere. Local media group DW-Media posted a short video of the new store to YouTube which will form part of their Bedlington development series.

  2. There are also 3 full page promotional pages for the Development of Morpeth, Active Northumberland and How Arch Works.....I wonder who pays for these as it may woo the undecided Northumberland voters in the run up to an election.

  3. Sorry to confuse everybody again but I moved the link to the webcam. You can now find it under the "About Bedlington" heading in the main menu.

  5. Have Arch now taken over the News Post Leader? Readers Views in this weeks New Post Leader appear to have been loaded with Arch and Labour Party promotional material for the local elections in May. The first letter is from Peter McIntyre chief executive of Arch who praises their work in Bedlington.....The second letter is from Alyson Wallace local Labour councilor who compliments and congratulates Arch. She also mentions that her hope is to be re-elected in May. The third letter is from a retired business woman from Worcestershire who worked in the energy industry. She has been looking to buy a retirement home in the region and praises Northumberland County Council and Arch for their development plans for Cambois…..The woman believes that the local Conservative Party have plans to scrap Arch so she will not now make a decision about moving to the area until after the May elections! The fourth and final letter relates to Sustainability and Transformation Plans (STPs) for the NHS. Northumberland, Tyne Wear Trust have said that they will require capital funding for to deliver such plans and describe how millions of pounds are needed for a backlog of repair work…..Perhaps Arch could assist with this so that Northumberland could use capital funding for Social Care.

  8. It was my understanding that the owners of the News Post Leader were in financial trouble so it's certainly possible I suspect it is simply more to do with an upcoming election?

  9. HPW wrote: " Templars....?!........maybe....eh Sym?!!....... " Yep, all those fellas and much further back ... Mind, the other strands on Sym's bloodline don't make for happy reading ... escape from the Irish Potato famine to work in the Cumbrian iron ore mines, deaths in those pits, walking over the Pennines for work in the Durham coal fields when the iron ore ran out. Others were the Jocko fishermen from the Outer Hebrides settling in Shields. The real nightmare for Sym is all that Jocko blood flowing though his tubes with the only relief being that it's been diluted by Norman juices from "1066 and all that". Some amazing characters have cropped-up in the Sym Saga and there's still more to do. Maggs, you're right, once you start you can't stop the research.
