It is well documented that Scargill accelerated the demise of the coal mining industry because he refused to hold a national ballot, used illegal 'flying pickets' instead. Started a national 'energy' strike in the summer. £1 million of hardship funds was hidden and never used for striking miners family's. The NUM continued to pay £34,000 annual rent on his London flat.
