    "The political persuasions/systems/beliefs of any country should make no difference." That's where we are going to differ pilgrim. As far as I can see the political elite in the EU wanted closer political union and they tried to force that through on the back of a single currency. Like the NCC economic strategy (in my view!) that's the wrong way around. Fiscal union comes after political union for some of the very reasons you state.
