Does NCC think that kids walk from Guidepost to Bedlington Station through Stakeford... a distance of a few miles...?!! The kids these days winna waak anywhere at aal except from Daddy's..[or Mummy's!]POSER JEEPS,which are usually parked on top of sacrosanct zig zag lines at pedestrian crossings next to the school gates...as AT GUIDE-POST school!![AND the schools at Bedlington top-end creating mayhem wi traffic!] It's been a canny lang trial for traffic lights, half of Bedlingtonshire already has the new Cree-Led lamposts and lights erected and operating, with the control lights they already have!!....and THAT'S a massive project, which a must admit, the organisers of the project deserve a pat on thi back for a change, cos mind,..tha's sum streetlights in sum queer aakward places, like wat they've just done in the last few days at Moorland Avenue junction at Bedlington Station, and the ones doon from the said Welwyn Bridge at Red Raa,doon ti the traffic island joining the A1147. Them lads on the job are sumtimes risking tha lives just being there daeing tha job,wi sum of thi idiots hareing aroond the roads nooadays! Another pat for NCC,me Son reported the 30mph signs at Bomarsund as having failed illumination at night. Two days later they were lit when a tuk LBJ oot at neet. A telt me Son that them signs haven't been lit since LBJ and him came to live wi us......nearly six years ago!! Mebbe aal the NCC engineers ownly work backshift!!

He swallows whole fish like it wud be an impossibility to get it doon, but he oppens he's gape,....... a tennis baal wud gaan doon it!!Here he is noo! Hi Merc! I can write mair stories aboot Percy, than a hev aboot me mining experiences on this site! It's mair fun watching his antics than waatchin owt on thi telly!! He can be pecking aroond at thi bottom of thi garden,as this morning answers, and as soon as a show me ugly mug in the conservatory windae,he stretches he's neck,curious-like,aal oppen thi glass door, shoot oot ti him..."Porcy,howweh get ya bait....!",and he cums up thi garden like a hare,wi he's gud wing flapping like hell, and he's otha wing at right-angles,cos it's deformed at thi elbow, and he canna stryten it oot. It hasn't been brokken,he was born like that,so will nivvor fly,and they can live up to 35 years.....so at my age,aal be getting a telegram from the queen....[or King?!] if a live lang enuff!,and he will be doon wi me at thi palace ti get wa medals....!!!! Aav got hoors and hoors of video of him splashing furiously in he's bath, playing wi aal he's toys.......... Little Black Jess,me little darlin',is frightened noo ti gaan doon thi garden on her aan, unless aa gaan doon wi her,and aav gotta chase Porcy up thi garden, oot thi way!! T'otha mornin Jess went ti sniff at some scrambled eggs [oota date...]wat was Porcy's bait. He was up agyen wor hoose windae where he perches aal thi time. He got he's eye on Jess at his bait, what he wasn't interested in afore this, cos he had eaten he's fill...... Next thing aa knew was...he came doon thi garden like a rocket wi he's wings mekkin a breeze in the still air,and he's viscious beak snappin oppen and shut.... and he went stryt for poor little Jess's tail.....whey she was terrified and a had ti play wi her ti calm her doon! In the summertime, they both lie in the garden,in the sun...he gets up and starts playin' wi he's aad spongy baal, carrying it aroond and dropping it in he's bath, and mekkin it float aroond....he's incredible man..! This is a different bird ti what ye see at thi harbours....they are striving ti survive,Porcy's been hand reared, from just oot thi nest at Killingworth lake, where he was rescued three years ago by a gud samaritan, and handed ti Jon who runs the Blyth Wildlife Trust. Jon asked me if a cud give him a home, after I released four other gulls at different times from him. He did say mind,Bill,it's a lang commitment, and needs a lot of dedication, but see hoo yi get on and keep me informed of he's progress. Whey, after three full successfull moults, owa the last three years,he's the loveliest looking herring gull ye'll ever see!! We've been feeding him on tins of budget dog food, aboot 1 tin every three days,as well as scrambled eggs, fat off any meats I cook, seeds etc,and whatever he feeds off naturally. Aav twice seen him swallow mice whole sale, seen thi little tail gaan doon last...!! Aav got video of him chasing a rat oot thi garden like he did wi Jess, and he's beak snapping like hell! Nae wonder the herring gull has no predators![Google "Herring Gull!] One day aa was watching him oot thi big patio windae,[floor ti roof,so a gud view of aal thi garden.] He was on he's favourite perching stone on me little stream, three feet away from me at thi otha side of the glass. A hord a screech, and in a split-second the sparrow-haak came in like a rocket.....40 mph, straight doon at Porcy........aa was mesmerised! He stopped short and landed in front of Porcy[Percy....ahem!],aboot three feet away, and spread he's wings and flashed he's teeth menacingly at wor poor little bord, thinkin' he was onti a gud dinner!! He backed a losser!! Porcy spread HIS wings, aal four feet span nearly, not quite cos he is disabled, and snapped he's beak wide open and started screeching like hell, then lurched at the hawk, and chased him doon thi garden. Thi hawk flew up onti the high fence,6 feet up,and kept squawking,Porcy canna fly otha than a couple of feet up off thi grund, but he boonced up and doon screeching like hell, till thi hawk flew away!! This has happened three times that aav seen close up,and aav nivvor seen thi hawk back in the last couple of years.[a regretted not having me camera handy like a usually dae!!] He leaves aal thi little birds alone, but chases aal thi big rooks and jackdaws and magpies oot thi garden aal thi time!! Me neighbours cat slinks doon thi bottom of thi garden, under the bushes,wide-eyed,and meks a fast bee-line for thi other side and oot!!...and that's nearly every day! When he waaks inti the kitchen for a leisurely stroll, like an aad hen,he sqwaaks lood as hell as soon as he sees wor lass, cos he thinks he's ganna get an apple gook, which he usually does! He doesn't eat the gook,he only gaans for the apple pips, which must be like caviar ti him! Thi behavior wi aal thi animals and otha birds will happen every day in thi wild, unnoticed by humans, but it's fascinating ti watch from a few feet away,in ya aan garden, which Porcy has claimed as HIS territory, naturally. In the summer, when we sit oot in thi garden, for a cuppa,he cums owa and drops doon in front of wor feet, like a little duck sitting there, watching ye..and if thi nybors hear me Wife and me taakin away ti him,and little black Jess, wor Labrador /cross,they'll think we are both crackers!! Ye only get confidence from bords and animals by taaking ti them aal the time.....it's voice vibrations that coont, not the pitmatic twang!! ..... IMGP8387[INQUISITIVE PERCY!].AVI

Hi! I lived in Storey's Buildings,[right side of the road going down to the Willow Bridge from Bedlington],from about 1945-48-ish. At a time before the pits were nationalised, and miners went through really hard times due to the viciousness of the coal-owners,the idea of even a suggestion of a golf course in the front fields would have been ludicrous! Who would have afforded to play on it? Choppington was an infant village totally centred around the two pits.[but mainly the Low pit as it WAS in the village!] Those fields had huge ponds along them as a result of the Willow Burn flooding in bad weather.the fields were wide open, with no plantations then, apart from the Willow saplings that grew along the banks of the burn. The Black Bridge was a couple of hundred yards up the burn, from the bridge, and carried coal from the Choppington pits[ A and B pits.],to the main line. The first golf course I ever saw was constructed at Acorn Bank,Hartford road,in Bedlington, after Costain Mining opencast re-instated the land after mining operations ceased. Mind who am I ti taak aboot golf, when,in those days,I and a think most hardworking miners also, wouldn't even have known wat one waas! Even in the late 1960's,it was well-known that the Bedlington Golf Club members consisted of businessmen,Doctor's,Lawyers, and such well to do people! Eventually,my next door Neighbour and pit marra,at Bedlington A pit, managed to secure membership,to the amazement of aal his marra's,and he had loads of mickey-tekkin aboot being in wi thi "Nobs"!! The Barrington pit ponies were aalwis in thi back fields, nae golf there....unless this rumour went back even further than before the pits came alang...1700's maybe? Intriguing suggestion!! Mind,I used to take my family up the Cheviots with our little touring caravan, for nearly twenty years, most weekends through the year,[from around 1977-1996], and it was not long before I had to give up the Caravan due to my Wife's ill-health,that I found out from the locals,in conversation about the history of the surrounding countryside, that there was a golf course on top of one of the hills on a plateau!![Doddington golf course] It was madness trying to walk up to the area, never mind play a roond of golf up there!!...ninety mile an hour winds......etc!![seriously ill-exposed!] So!....in context, maybe there might have been an amatuer course, owa the fields,at Chopington, for the lads who might have used a stottie baal and a hezzel twig,or a willow twig, for a club!! We used ti play quoits at bait-time,doon Choppington high pit,for ten minutes or so,[You were only allowed twenty minutes bait for a whole shift in stinking wet conditions],and we used ponies shoes for quoits!![ improvisation by way of example!] I would love to see any pictures of the bridge,as I used to play in those fields and watch the coal trains going over the bridge very frequently....very exciting for us little whippersnappers in those days!...we were used to seeing horse and carts,so a tankey was like a hero of a thing to see!

Mr Routledge was a teacher at the old Whitley school, when I was there from around 1951-ish....to 1956,when I started Westridge School. I never knew his First name. He was a smashing natured teacher, always up for a laugh with thi kids,as was his co-partner Mr Bebbington. Anybody else remember him.?

He still goes over to Normandy every year to take part in the D-Day Landings Memorial services...at 92 yrs old.! We owe our Independance as a free country to Joe and all his comrades across all the forces! No plaques yet,but a bet in time there will be![and rightly so!] -

John was brought up in East Terrace,Stakeford,or,as it was called in thi aad days..."Thi Bomar"...[Bomarsund colliery village...colliery owned terraces]. I lived in West Terrace from 1970-2001,.....31 years, and I nivvor,ivvor.....knew owt aboot fitba',but aa cud see hoo clivvor this nine year aad kid was when he went up ti the store, for he's Mother's messages,,[shopping!],cos he used ti heed thi baal aal thi way up thi street, from one high waal ti thi other, side ti side,as weel as playing keepy-up withoot dropping thi baal at aal! He's Dad worked at thi pit,as did he's uncle Jimmy, who was a Deputy at Ashington pit till it closed in 1987.[he was in charge of me and me marra's at times...........] John's Parents were the loveliest folk on this planet,as was John,he'sel' a smashing natured kid. Nivvor seen him for years, what's he daeing noo?....Managing or Coaching?........ Oh,and can anybody tell me wat the original shop-owner's nyem waas, afore it became "Fullarton's"?[in the 1950's?] -

Brian o' Neill,[or "Bon"...to his friends],went to the catholic shool at Bedlington top-end,along with a few of my Friends, and also with my Wife.[when she was young!] His Parents lived opposite my Mother in Law down at Grange Park from the Park being built. When he made the grade,he came up north to see his folks, and brought oot aal thi nybors,ti see he's brand new Jag saloon! THIS was an occasion!,seeing as the average car in the street,of which there were only a half dozen, were Ford Populars,[circa 1958-ish....],a Hillman Minx,a Ford Anglia 105E.......!..etc. He played in the school team alang wi me aad long lost Marra,["welsh-connect" on this forum],and my marra used ti be aalwis on aboot hoo gud Bon was! Are yi in theor Welshie?!! -
Hi all! Been trying ti write a bit more of me story in ink,but a bad time over thi festive season! Got a press cutting from me Son's paper..[the Independent...a think....],aboot Kellingly Colliery closing. A brilliantly sympathetic [to thi miners] article, well written, but required a correction or two...[nit-picking..!] It said that Kellingly was the biggest colliery in England at one time, with 3000 miners employed. Truth is,that Ashington Colliery was the biggest pit in thi WORLD with over 5000 miners employed,at one time. James,Northumberland mining history tells us there were 76 pits in our County, before Nationalisation....not nit-picking,only for correctness! I would suggest, only my own opinion here mind, that greedy coal owners had small drift mines producing coal,"on the quiet",[Fiddling..in other words!],to add to the production of the bigger pits to boost their output artificially,as part of the Power-game.[more profits on sales..less taxes paid on assets un-declared...]..so in reality, there was probably even more pits than were officially recorded! Am I taaking stupid here,it was just a thowt, cos a was thinking aboot Barmoor...who would have thowt aboot sinking such a smaal pit in such a daft place, when not many folk even knew or heard of the pit when a was young![...not so daft on second thowts, like Choppington High Pit,THAT was a tettie pit, hiddened owa the fields oot o' sight of the public eye,and aal it's workng life, remained the same aad corrugated rusty, faalin ti bits,hell-hole-of-a-place,where thi word "Investment",or "modernisation" still hadn't found it!!].....while Choppington "A" pit, near ti thi main road,in view of the general public, was, like most other pits situated in the village centres,brick-built,well constructed,well-ventilated [regarding mine-gases],and,better investment spent...consequently a better safety record...[thi high pit was atrocious on safety!] Mebbe a glaaky suggestion, but summick ti think aboot, seeing that even in modern times, people in high places claimed compen. for hooses they didn't have,or maintenance costs for cleaning oot their castle-moats....etc....etc,so why not a bit of fiddle with getting some easy coal from a drift here and there!

Hi all! Welshie!!,are yi in there?,howweh, tell ya stories aboot thi 'chute! Oh,a just thowt,me otha young mate used ti tek me up wen thi bird shows were on,and aa wudda ownly been aboot 11yrs aad then.[1954-5..ish] A can mind seein millions of cages lined up,and stacked on top of each utha,wi gowldies, greenies, canaries, budgies, and aal sorts of utha bords aal chirpin and cheepin tha little hearts oot. A used ti wunda hoo anybody cud judge the contest, and pick a winner, cos they were aal beautiful little wee'uns,in my eyes! Can anybody mind o' the bord shows? Wud it be allowed nooadays wi H n S ..?

Heh heh! Teks me back ti wen a wus a skittering yung ched wi a snotty beak! Me best mate,[who aav just gettn bak in touch with after 50 years exile in S.Wales.....through this forum!!],who is Welshconnect, tuk me up ti thi "Chute",one day, when we were aboot 14 yrs aad,cos he was gaana hae a game o' billiards. Whey aa waasn't interessent in owt like that or sports of any kind! Aa just waanted ti clart on wi electricity...and transformers...mekkin high voltage carbon arc devices, and clartin aboot wi aad wirelesses..[pre-war monsters they were!] So,anywheh,we went up ti thi 'chute,[which completely baffled me cos aa thowt a chute was waat they teemed coal doal doon, inti thi ships at thi blyth docks!!] Jim paid for a game o' billiards, and gie me a bent bit o' dowellin,queer-shaped,wi a felt tip,and a little cube o' blue chaak. He telt 'is ti rub thi chaak owa thi tip of thi stick, and gie him thi chaak afta aa was dyun.....which aa did.....[sumwat bemused, and a thowt he was windin' me aboot thi chaak!] He tuk forst shot, hit a baal, and sed it was my torn. So,aa tuk a shot and did an Inspector Clouseau on thi luvly green material on thi tyeble......whey ,nearly, but didn't rip it....mind not far away! Jim was laffin he's heed off at me antics, cos it ownly med me mair narvis aboot rippin' it on ivry shot a tuk! A sed Jim,aal stick ti fiddling aboot wi rectifier valves and double-diodes....and thi like!! Efta that,a used ti just waatch him and he's otha mates playin, and just cudn't see thi point in this queer "game"!! Naa,aam not a sporty porsin at aal, guitars motorbikes, and me wee black Jess, are my kind of sanity-savers!....oh!,and Percy,me tame[?!!!!],disabled Herring gull! Been wi me and me family fo' three years noo, since just oot thi nest, moulted three years, and noo a fine young whipper-snapper..comical ti watch at close-quarters,like when yi hing thi weshin' oot on thi line, and he needs he's bait,an he cums aback o' yi n tries ti pull ya shoe off from behind,or yanks at ya jeans again from ahent yi,ti let yi knaa he's hungry!! Aye, a must be crackers! ..........gaanain off-topic again Wilma!!!!!!

Sym...the Euclids were huge at the time, but were only 25 and 30-tonners![compared ti the 350-tonners we have noo!] Kieth....Barmoor was only a wee tiny landsale pit, where they sold the coal, stone,AND the water!! The water was rich in Barium and went for Barium extraction to supply Hospitals for Barium meals for X-rays The pit was set in a dip,the Manager of Choppington High Pit,was also Manager of Barmoor. Sometimes we at High pit were short of timber or Arched girders due to roads and railways being closed with heavy snow and ice,and our lads had to go up and bring stuff like that down from Barmoor to keep our pit going....![one tetty-pit tekkin' off anotha tetty-pit!!] The black bridge up the Choppington fields would be a good contender for the pic puzzle.seeing as the Dr pit chimney was about 180 feet high, and you can see all the terraces, right to thi gable ends, and thi high ground to thi right looks like the top-end of Bedlington. The River Blyth Bailey bridge AND the Bedlington Bank one also, were built around 1954,-ish [give or take a few years!] When I was aboot ten or eleven years old,me and my school friends used to gaan doon ti watch aal thi activity as they were buiding them from the concrete foondations up-owa. Often we watched as greet lang lengths of Greenheart timber were HAND-SAWN by four men, using a long straight double-handled saw. There were two men at each end holding the saw,and it used to take an age to cut through the timber which was aboot two-foot square, and so dense that pieces that were sawn off, like aboot 18 inches lang, say, just sank ti thi bottom of thi river! When we tried ti lift bits of off-cuts,just messing aboot,as yi dae when ya a kid,we cudn't mark them!! It was exciting for us watching under floodlights,at night,[dark at 4-0-clock in thi winter neets,],as we used ti creep ever closer ti watch them. Costain paid for the road from the Acorn Bank opencast mine, over these bridges, across the fields,to Bebside pit,to be handled there. One afternoon,we heard a rumble,as we were walking doon Bedlington Bank,on our way ti the woods, and when we looked over to the new stretch of road which had been completed,up to the road bridge,we watched a bulldozer coming down the new road, tumbling two anti-tank concrete blocks in front of him, like tumbling two smaal dice!!...we weren't half amazed to see this display of raw power!! The 42-ton Coal-haulers used make the river bridge bounce up and down crazily,as they went over every 15 minutes! Noo!,when we were kids,it appeared as if there were a fleet of coal-haulers,as there was Euclids! But an excellent short DVD which Six-Townships put out,[which was rescued from a discarded old VHS tape in a skip!!],showed there were only four tractors, and eight hoppers, which were being loaded every 15 minutes. Four hoppers were in transit at any one time, whilst the other four were being loaded. This meant that a hauler was passing over the bridge every 15 mins, albeit in different directions. We used ti cadge rides in thi Euclids from the road bridge area, reet owa ti thi Bebside pit and back!,it was exciting, seeing as we never experienced anything other than a bus-ride sitting aside wa mutha's! We were amused ti see the four supporting pillars of thi road bridge being constructed by stacking huge concrete drain sections,[aboot four feet wide] on top of each other, then filling them with concrete and re-inforcing rods....[the term "RE-BAR" wasn't coined in them days!]. It was quick, and efficient, but we thought they would crack open like nuts when heavy trucks went owa them!![THAT'S hoo aa went doon thi pit!!] Thi ONE thing that dismayed aal us kids,[hard-up kids!],was that they created the cut for thi new road straight through the best blackberry plantation in thi Coonty!!... That's where we got a bit pocket money, pickin' blackies, and sellin' them aroond thi doors. Vic,ask thi boss if she remembers us daeing that, cos almost aal the neighbours used ti clamour for thim....it was a case of filling two big Ostermilk tins, away up Bedltn Bank, roond thi doors,Sowld, away back doon thi bank, repeat thi process till wa fingers ached!![thruppence a pund in aad munney!!] Sorry....I digressed in a most un-protocollitically way......!

Heh heh! ......Thompson's Stores brings back memories! Me Mutha used ti waak me poor little legs off, from Storey's Buildings,on thi Willow Bridge,at Choppington, aal thi way up ti thi top-end of Bedlington,ti get shopping, spend her stamps, and get me tackety byeuts,[ minaiture pit byeuts wi steel heel and toe- plates, and studs...not Segs...studs!]. Aa was two ti three years aad,in 1946-7-8 ish, gaanin on four, before we shifted ti thi posh cooncil hooses wi inside netties and proppa baths, knaan as Hollymoont Square,in Bedlington.[the word "Estate" hadn't been coined ti designate thi post-war building program, they were knaan as "The new cooncil hooses" !] Thi forst time a went ti Beamish Museum,wi me Wife, forra day oot,as was chuffed ti see the different sizes of "Tackety Byeuts" hingin' up aback a thi coonta!!,in thi hardware shop, alang wi filler's and shifter's shuul's![a "shifter" was generally a stoneman doon thi pit..not necessarilly a caunch-man!]. Reet doon ti thi smaa size aa wudda worn, alang wi aal thi otha poor kids hoo didn't hae any shoes..! Us kids used ti play in the hooses owa from the picture-haal,next ti thi Tanky, when they were being pulled doon, after waatchin' Tarzan swingin aboot in thi jungle, avoiding spears being hoyed at 'im,and we used ti mek spears oot o' thi wood dowelling which was used for corner-beading on thi internal waals,in them days.[little things aalwis pleased little minds!] We hoyed them aroond at each utha, and a divvent knaa enybody ,yit, hoo ivvor got speared or hurt in eny way during wor tarzan antics....![H n S....? !]

Ever since I refused to go onto thier new fibre optic broadband tariff,my computer has slowed down immensely, and it happened just after I had two phone calls a fortnight apart, trying to persuade me change from the old tariff I have been on since they started! This,by the way,was a couple of years ago, nowt ti dae wi thi Cyber attack, and resulting phone calls we got. Well,Margaret, isn't the internet a smashing thing ti hev....espeshully for bringing aad friends tigitha!! Can ye mind Mrs Allison across the road from Auntie Peg's?[No 13 Hollymount]..a mean directly opposite? She had four of a family when you were nine, and five by the time you/we were 10 years old. I am Billy, the youngest of the original four! My younger sister was born when we were 10 yrs,in 1954?[correct me please!] On my class 2 photo, taken at the Bedlington village infants school,I have named most of the 43 pupils, starting with myself at the very top left of the back row,all smiling with my little dimple - cheeks! Now,unless my memory is,for once, letting me down,I have you marked also sitting cutely, smiling, with your little shoulder bag on.! How I have the photo,is because one of our friends who is on the photo, standing next to me,a lad called Jim Hardy, sent the photo into the "LEADER" free press , a few years ago,so I cut it out and kept it for posterity.[never thinking that some day we would all have computers...!] I am trying to find out how to post it on here!! Lovely to hear from you Margaret,Hubby wouldn't be Tommy would he? [Another friend from around the corner at Hollymount!] Cheers Margaret! Billy. P.S. thanks to Tonyp for alerting me to your posting!! -

Foxy, thanks for posting Frankie, rare for him not to have seen the camera, and be waving like hell ti the cameram....er.....camera-person...[PC!!] Aav got vivid memories of him riding aroond the corner in Hollymoont Square, and up his garden path,on he's motor bike,Jacket flying open in the wind...as we aal did in them days...nae helmets...nae gloves...!![used ti dae a "Saint",after dismounting, straighten his jacket and swish back he's buttered hair!... ...lukkin' like he had just waaked yem from thi dance!] He was a great character, was canny young Frankie Heron.

Spot on Sym! The word was PRIDE! Pitmen's wives had it rough and tough,wi poss-tubs,seeking waata from thi tap at thi end of thi street, etc, boiling terry towelling nappies by the dozen, but they kept the house spick and span,wi cloods of smoke aal aroond from millions of smoky chimley-pots...[spell-ckecker disnae work on Wilma's posts!!..it crashes!!] A can mind a fella who aalwis went up thi street,wi his jacket sleeve smartly folded and tucked, and pinned up,and aa was just a bairn, but a can mind the fella, clear as day![it might not have been your Uncle, cos there were a few miners in my locality with one arm.] A fella who lived across from us at Hollymount Square, only had one arm,and he wore a hook attached to his bad arm stub-end. He had one of the best gardens in the square,he used to put the spade shank in the hook, and turn the spade with his good hand...THAT was spirit! Then old Bob Reed,he was the Co-op dairyman,he had his arm off at the shoulder and he drove his little store van aal owa Bedltn ,delivering milk, for donkey's years![he used to throw the old wooden crates with 20 bottles of milk in,like they were cardboard boxes!!...stacking them in the dairy, loading his van etc! Another neighbour on the corner of the square had a nasty accident at the Doctor pit, when his arm got pulled into the conveyor belt rollers, and literally pulled his arm out of its socket. It was amazing to see people like this recover and just get on with life......no phone calls to "No-win....no-fee"! There was also a fella,[an old coal-cutterman],who used to hobble up the street to the club,on old-fashioned heavy wooden crutches, with one leg. This sort of sight was common in those days, when the mining industry was still hand filling, cutting etc.
