Welcome to the group @dansybelle. From when the mines started in the North east there has always been stories of families moving from the South to find work in the Northern mines but never heard any stories etc. of miners moving South to find work in mining as all the mines would have been in full production in 1944 when WWII ended. The Durham Mining Musem site has a list of all the Durham & Northumberland collieries. This is a direct link to the alphabetical entries of mines in the area :- http://www.dmm.org.uk/colliery/index_a.htm Under the Morpeth name there are only two entries :- Morpeth Banks Colliery Pegswood, Morpeth & Morpeth Moor Colliery There were two collieries in Bedlington :- Doctor Pit & Bedlington/Sleekburn 'A' pit and these two pits had links with other pits in the area eg. Cambois, Choppington, West Sleekburn, Barrington & Bomarsund, Stakeford. For a family to move to the South withoput work or links to relatives would seem to be a very brave move. I am not a member of a genealogy site but expect them to have access to to the latest census records ie. 1921 and birt h records that might help you identify area the family lived and occupation.

As you will have noticed Ken the photo I poated above is Nedderton Village school - that's me getting mixed up and calling it Netherton Colliery school

@westridge wanderer - before your family moved to Westlea did your family live at Netherton Colliery? There is a Netherton Colliery school photo that was posted on the Facebook group Bygone Bedlington by Andrea Warner in 2015 and a Pamela Straw was named in the photo. The above photo was taken from Morland Avenue, Bedlington Station and the following photo from Vulcan Place at the Market Place :- The waste from both Bedlington pits, then 'A' pit and the Doctor pit, dumped onto this pit heap. The top of the heap was removed and trees planted forming part of Gallagher Park. -

Never been able to find an online posting of the banner with 'Bedlington "A"' name on it. On all the local Facebook groups there are loads on photos of different colliery bands with their banner at the Northumberland Miners Picnic but none, that I can find, of 'Bedlington A'. I would guess there is one in the Woodhorn Museum. -

Above n ewspaper cuttings posted on the Bygone Bedlington Facebook group by Eva Abdin. her grandmother was one of the mothers that went underground. I was informed, just yesterday, by an aunt of mine, Florence Henderson, that my grannie, Mary Henderson (nee Hall) and my mam, Nancy Edgar (nee henderson) were among the group that went underground. -

As kids coming home from Barrington CP School through the pit yard we often stopped to try and catch small fish, sticklebacks I think, from the pond using a piece of grass with a worm slid between the split end of a long piece of grass. When the fish wrapped it's mouth around the worm and you felt the tug on the grass you pulled the grass out of the water and the fish was still on the end of the worm -

@Kev Short these are the two images of buildings in the Bedlington iron and engine works, 1736-1867 booklet.

@Kev Short never seen any plans for the construction of the buildings . We played in the area of the houses in your second photo in the late 1950's and early 1960's but can't recall anything about them. A you have been searching/Googling online I would assume you have accessed all the info and photos that anyone else in this group has had access to. Graces Guide gies a lot of info on the Iron Works but no plans ;- https://www.gracesguide.co.uk/Bedlington_Ironworks On the group https://communities.northumberland.gov.uk/ under Bedlington/Plans there a couple of documents refering to the iron Works and one might help you with the layouut of area adjoing the iron Works but nothing in the detail and info you are looking for.
