  1. The reason I was searching for Double Row was the Barrington group were trying to establish how the rows, in Barrington, got their name. My 'fuzzy' memory came up with a thread that said I had been told (think it was by an uncle that married a lass from Barrington) that Double Row was the pit row that had an extra, 2 instead of 1, room down stairs. Searche on here just in case the explanation for the name was in one of HPW's stories.

Bedlington 'A' pit had North Row to the north of the pit and South Row to the South. Shop Row I assume had a shop but never new one in my time, 1953-60, passing and playing in that row when I went to Barrington school.

As you note 3g the naming of the Dr Pit - New South Row - doesn't appear to be logical. Do any of the old Dr Pit rows have a logic, that can be proved, to their names?

Shiney Row - Doctor Terrace - Telephone Row - New South Row - Cross Row & North Terrace.0

Barrington rows - the thoughts on the first rows built - those on the an 1859 :-

    1) Chapel Row - was that because of the chapel?

    2) Blacsmiths Row - was that where the Blacksmiths were housed?

    3) School Row - next to the original school in the village?

    4) Stone Row - ?

    5) Double Row - was that because they had extra rooms, or just because it ran parallel with Chapel Row?

Then the next rows to be built, on a 1924 map :-

    6) Victoria Row - after Queen Victoria?

    7) Alexandra Row - after Princess Alexandra of Denmark ?

    8) Freehold Row - ??

    9) Railway Row - next to the railway?

    10) Middle Row - it wasn't in the middle of Barrington but between Railway

    and finally

    11) Office Row - was that where the white & blue collar pit workers were housed, next to the pit managers house?

Close, but isn't where the Police HQ is almost slap on the Dr Pit head, or at least just a tiny bit South of it?

The 'raas' were West and North of this. The most prominent one (nearest the Front Street) was Shiney Row, shown here on the right of Cympil's gallery photo:

    gallery_818_59_53254.jpg

If you look at the row on the left of this picture (Doctor Terrace) there were some shorter rows running at about ninety degrees way over at the back there. One of them, as I remember, was New South Row. Why it was called this I could never fathom as it wasn't South of anything I could see. Anyway, my guess is that Double Row was 'ower there'. These other rows were the first to see the bulldozer, and I don't think they had the renovation money spent on them the more prominent ones in the foreground had.

Waiting to be corrected on any of this! smile.gif

Hey, start a gallery, and get those pictures up there for posterity! Need any help with this then just ask any of the Mods or Admins.

Searching for info on the Barrington Double Row I noticed this old posting on 'Double Row - Bedlington'.

Double Row, Bedlington never appears on any of the old maps that search - http://maps.nls.uk/

New South Row first appears on the 1921 map and the only reason I could guess at the names is because South Row already existed at the 'A' pit, Bedlington Station.

South Row, although not named until the 1921 map, is drawn on the 1858 & 1896 maps.

Was there a Double Row at the Doctor Pit ?

  3. Latest rumour on the Top Club/Laird's House = 'Yeah it was sold a while ago. It been turned into an upmarket B&B upstairs and a restaurant downstairs.

I can't find a planning application on the NCC site. Does anyone know if the latest rumour has any truth in it?

Perhaps you should try this Eggy ...

A woman is frying eggs for breakfast. Suddenly her hubby appears in the kitchen and screams:

-Be careful! Put some more margarine in the pan! You have too many in the pan at once. TOO MANY! Turn them over! TURN THEM OVER NOW! MORE MARGARINE! They’ll stick to the pan! Be careful! I said CAREFUL! You never listen to me when you’re cooking! NEVER! Turn them over! Hurry up! And, don’t forget to put salt on them. You know you always forget it! Put salt on them! SALT!

    His wife stares at him

-What’s the matter with you? Do you think I’ve never fried an egg before?

    Hubby replies quietly:

-I just wanted you to see how it feels when I’m driving.

    I have - 2 left hand fingers + 2 right hand fingers = 4k off!:o

  5. From your initial comment I am sure you have done loads of searching on the www only to find  there's not a lot you can do, even if the owner of the gun is not following the NFU guidelines.

I know complaints take ages to get seen and normally the response to the majority of complaints is 'current guidelines are not being broken etc. etc' but I still think it's worth you, and every other resident in the area, filling in a complaint and requesting the noise levels of the gun be measured to ensure they are within current NCC/Eu/NFU/...... guidlines.

Attached the West Riding Guidelines extract from their PDF document as it's often handy to use/copy council words when complaining.

I read somewhere that the landlord, during the war and rationing times, used to put a toy monkey in the window to let his regulars know that he had had a delivery of beer.

An uncle on mine, born Beatty Road, Bedlington, 1938 said the story about the Monkey in the window was not true.

However tThe Barrington Arms got a paragraph in Issue No 138 - February/March 2014 of The Northumbrian - Gordon Wilkinson (journalist I think) on a subject 'How a Pub makes a name for itself' has written :-

...... However a look in the window of the Barrington Arms in Bedlington during the Second World War could have brought good news to those fancying a pint. Beer was rationed in those days but it could be in short supply , so the landlord would stick a stuffed monkey in the window to tip off those in the know that he had received a consignment. The pub has been named the nicknamed The Monkey ever since.'

    --------------------------

No mention of where he got the story from.

Is there anything happening in Bedlington today?

Just checked on Live CL and there appears to many young ladies coming out of the newsagents and saying - Goochie Goochie Goo to small persons in carriages.

Can't find anything online, even for his final resting place  in Clewer, Windsor.

There is a Bedlington lad, Ryan Hogg (don't know if he is related to Adam that started this topic), that has a Facebook group for Daniel Gooch and there are a couple of links, to another group and a blog, but that's all I can find.

    Possibly the date is 1957

Cheers Terry - Margaret Speller had posted both sides of the photo on Bygone Bedlington site and when I saw the name Terry Foote on the back I remembered you had just commented on one of Jane Muckian's Westridge photos but I hadn't realised the photo came from your collection.

There was a comment, on the Bygone Bedlington site, by a Colin Sim and it was :- " 10 is Peter Low not George and 20s first name was Ivy". Do you agree with that ?

If it's Ok with you I will add your photo to the Gallery Album :- Westridge School - End of term class photos.

    NOT TO MENTION...
3 Brits die each year testing if a 9v battery works on their tongue.

142 Brits were injured in 1999 by not removing all pins from new shirts.

58 Brits are injured each year by using sharp knives instead of screwdrivers.
31 Brits have died since 1996 by watering their Christmas tree while the fairy lights were plugged in.

19 Brits have died in the last 3 years believing that Christmas decorations were chocolate.

British Hospitals reported 4 broken arms last year after Xmas cracker-pulling accidents.

18 Brits had serious burns in 2000 trying on a new jumper with a lit cigarette in their mouth.

A massive 543 Brits were admitted to A&E; in the last two years after trying to open bottles of beer with their teeth.

5 Brits were injured last year in accidents involving out-of-control Scalextric cars.

    and finally...

In 2000, eight Brits were admitted to hospital with fractured skulls incurred whilst throwing up into the toilet.

Just got 1 more injury to inflict and then I will have the set, apart from the 3 that result in no more adventures!

    Do they come any worse?

Yes but I'll save them for another day. How about :-

So this teacher is teaching her junior school class, and she's telling them that the word of the day is 'contagious.' She asks if anyone can use this word in a sentence, and several people stick up their hands.
    "Carl," she says.
Carl says, "My dad told me to stay away from kids with mumps,'cause they're contagious."
    "Very good," says the teacher.
Then she picks Suzie, who says, "The atmosphere was contagious," and the teacher says, "Excellent, Suzie!"
Then she notices that Little Johnny has his hand up, at the back of the class. "Yes, Johnny?" she says.
Johnny says, "The other day, me and my dad's a-sittin around, and we saw our blonde neighbor painting her fence. She had a tiny little model car paintbrush, and she was going in tiny little strokes up and down the fence, and my dad says to me, "Jesus, it's gonna take that c**t ages to finish that fence."
