  1. Ralph Lowe on the [Barrington, Barnt' n memories and stuff!!](https://www.facebook.com/groups/958444760904321/) group is trying to idenmtify the other 6 girls in this netball team photo. Ralph posted this comment :- 'Sister, Linda, sitting in the bottom row, 1st from our right. Linda was in the Girls Training Corps (GTC), which was set up during WW2. The photo was taken at Bedlington Station Modern School, which appears to be the main hall. I think there was also a Barton branch of the GTC, of which Linda was a member.' Can any member of this group name anyone in the photo?

Construction is well underway on a new outdoor climbing attraction for Plessey Woods Country Park.

The investment in specially constructed ‘climbing boulders’ will complement the refurbished and improved visitor centre and toilets which are due to re-open in the coming months.

Three large manmade boulders, around ten feet in height, will be installed in a clearing in the trees, providing fun and fitness for a range of skill levels and abilities.

There will be a rubberised surface underneath alongside safety signage.

And as part of the scheme a child-friendly boulder climbing is also being put in by the current playpark.

The boulders have been paid for by the County Council, Section 106 monies and local County Councillor Malcolm Robinson through his Member’s Small Schemes fund.

The boulders will complement the range of improvements to the park’s visitor centre, also supported by Cllr Robinson, which include an enlarged cafe area, modernised kitchen and improved serving area and new toilets.

Councillor John Riddle, cabinet member for environment, farming and rural, said: “We are committed to ensuring our parks and green spaces are well managed and maintained, and to invest in them so that they continue to be among our most popular attractions.

“We know how important our open spaces are for people’s health and wellbeing and this will be a fantastic new addition for the park, alongside our refurbished and improved visitor centre and toilet facilities.”

The climbing structures have been designed to look realistic and provide a range of different holds and routes for climbers and non-climbers of all abilities to have a go at the growing sport of ‘bouldering’.

Bedlington West County Councillor Malcolm Robinson said: “This is going to be a great new feature for this wonderful park, and it’s something I’ve been keen to support through funding.

“Plessey Woods is so popular with residents and visitors and we hope that this exciting new free-to-access facility will allow non-climbers to get involved, helping them to keep fit as well as attracting those already involved in the sport that want to practice and improve their skills in a safe outdoor environment.”

.............Bedlington Terriers, a club with a proud history and deep roots in our community, has played at Dr Pit Welfare Park for more than half a century. They had secured planning permission and funding to upgrade the pitch to 3G

I am suirprised that they wanted tpo upgrade the pitch to artificial turf.

I have no idea how many, if any, other teams in the league the terriers played in had 3G:iiam:.

But I would always want Bedlington Dr. Pit Welfare Park to have a Bedlington football team playing there🤞.

    Good luck Mal:thumbsup:

Thanks for the info about the land.  It was an uncle of mine who kept everything and we had to have an extension built to house all his parents stuff.  Friends and family who see it think it’s a time capsule. At the moment I am busy cataloging all documentation and correspondence.  Wish Even Martin was still around.

    👍

  5. So a mini Beamish for Bedlington:). Sounds good @Pegwoman

Do you think there is a spare plot of land, with Carparking, in Bedlington? The grassed area at the top of the Elenbel & Tomlea Avenue where  Puddlers Row used to be?

Our home is like yours as my wife keeps everything, stashed away in cupboards, just incase we ever need it

  6. Unfortunately @Pegwoman I would thing any artefacts of Bedlington's history will surely be with existing collections outside of Bedlington. Probably all Bedlington has left are a few photos:(

    Hi there,

on the topic of German pork butchers, I wondered if there was a Mogerley shop in Durham or near Durham. My grandfather, Heinrich Mogerley was working on a pork butchers when my grandmother, Mary Pratt, came in to buy meat. He went on to marry her and they moved to Ireland and opened their own business. I'm assuming he worked for a family member over there. If anyone has any information I'd be very grateful. Thank you 🙂 Barbara

@BMog - don't recall any of the Bedlington members mentioning links to Mogerley family.

I searched this site for the name 'Mogerley' but it has never been mentioned before :iiam::(

Hi. I've found out that my grandma's uncle was John Maddison Hanson who ran Oddfellows Arms in Bedlington. She lived with him till she married.

@pat nee McIntyre a few years back a member, @Reedy, posted a list of pubs that his dad could remember and among the names was the Oddfellows Arms. he also had an old newspaper cutting .

In 2017 a member, @dunlinds, posted info of the pub :-

    dunlinds.thumb.png.99df9fefa6cdd3e4c20b90faf5b6af1c.png

and  @Canny lass was doing some research in 2022 on something else but in her research she identfied where the Odfellows pub had been located = Front Street East. This is the old map she marked where the pub would have been :-

An old photo naming the Odfellows Arms was found but I can't recall who found it or where it was found. We joined the info from reedy, the old photo, and a Google street view of 2016 to show where it was though to be :-

  11. @Gary Mills rather than post numerous comments into the Netgherton album(s) in the Gallery section I have created this entry in History Hollow for you.

    Your question :

    Can you explain Netherton/Nedderton please?

Nedderton used to be called Netherton and the Colliery rows were added later. When the colliery stopped producing coal and finaly closed in 1974 all the rows etc were demolished.

Netherton changed it's name to Nedderton to avoid confusion with postal deliveries as there was another village called Netherton just outside Rothbury.

Netherton Colliery kept the same name as it was part of the colliery rows and shop owners full postal address.

This extract from the Kelly's trade directory of 1910 mentions the change

    KellysDirectory1910.thumb.jpg.60c96ca3c6d879732e64560977183c3f.jpg

Even when you look at current maps of Nedderton you will see that the old hall in Nedderton is still named Netherton Hall.

Hi Alan I am a bit rusty with my definitions as I am now retired but had some experience in Workers Co-operative sector. Have found out some interesting things. From the Community Right to Buy introduced as part of the Localism Act 2011.

There are 4 categories as follows.

    Community Right to Buy.

    Community Buy Out

    Community Asset Transfer.

    Community Right to bid.

That allows community groups to nominate land or buildings as "Assets of Community Value" that does not guarantee the community the right to buy but it does trigger a process where the Community gets first opportunity to bid when an asset is put up for sale

I have been reading about Bedlington Terriers and the problems they have as a Community Interest Company (CIC) with a company that wants the Bedlington Terriers to vacate the ground that has been part of the local football fabric for a very long time.

If the Bedlington Terriers could look at those 4 categories that I have displayed and they got some legal advice from a Co-operative Development Body in the region this could be of some assistance in their case of keeping Bedlington Terriers at their home ground for years to come.

I don't know if this would be helpful in anyway as there is a very pro-active councillor Malcolm I am not familiar with his surname so apologies for that but he might be interested in this Localism Act 2011 and the categories that could benefit the Bedlington Community in the future as a form of building up Community Assets.

I hope this is helpful information.

Yours in the Spirit of Co-operation.

    Malcolm.

    Cheers @Malcolm George Allan

I would guess the very ative councilor you are thinking abouit is Malcolm Robinson who often posts info on the work the local council is doing, or not doing.

  14. @Malcolm George Allan - whats a 'Community right to build'?

I only know I have seen many comments on the online groups about a new swimming pool in Bedlington and I believe it has been discussed many times by the West Bedlington Council but never had the go ahead:(

In the 1950's we walked walked to Humford baths and it was 3d for the whole 8 hours Wilf kept it open:)

Back in 2016-17 we created a couple of Then & Now images :-

In the Gallery section of this group under Historic Bedlington there ia an album with images of Humford. This is a direct link to that album :-
