Hello out there,

I lived in Bedlington as a child up until 1976, then we moved further north due to my dad's place of work 'Whittle Colliery' nr Shilbottle.

I have lot's of good memories of Bedlington in the early - mid 70's ie; Miner's picnic, Plessey woods and those stepping stones, Laws stores, the Netto revelation, the Oval, watching classic 1940 serials in the Westlea Club, making a huge snowman on the green oppisite the Bedlington Terrier pub, as well as scant memories of Netherton Colliery and a certain Jacky Tyler - anyone remember him? He used to be forever shoveling up spilt coal from the roads.

My late dad used to work at Netherton Colliery nickname was Titch or Joe. He was related to the Miller family and his surname was Halliday.

A big hello to anyone out there with any information/ memories of this great place.

Hello Jojo..i`m familiar with Jacky Tyler,my mother used to mention him,he used to have a little black dog didn`t he? and a brother Joe.

Are Davy and Frankie Halliday your relations or are they different Hallidays?

I don`t know if you`ve seen the photo`s of Netherton Coliery pitmen in the History Hollow section yet but you might recognise someone..

They're my cousins - used to live in Westlea area. Not seen them in years. Yeah, I noticed the colliery pics, that's what prompted me to join this board. Alas, I didn't recognize anyone on them.

Can't recall Tyler's dog, but I can still hear him scrape away with his shovel on the road. I used to know some old bearded bloke called Sandy from Netherton [earliest memories here].

This forum is great, looking around the place, I'm having loads of memories awoken... someone spoke about Saber toothed tigers/ picnic - I've no idea, but that rang distant bells for some reason.

Welcome to the forum Jojo :)

Hi JoJo

I remember my early years spent at Netherton (My dad was born there). I used to visit my Grandparents who lived in the village. We used to run up and down the lanes between the houses playing with hoops, and often saw Jack-the-shovel.

Thanks for the welcome folks. Even though I've not lived in Bedlington itself for 31 years, I still have fond memories of the place as a child. I also remember being terribly upset about being told the family were moving away from the area.

I remember my dad telling me that the Wombles were at Atlee Park...I never saw a Womble at all. The siren from Cambios power station terrifying me. [Those chimney's are a huge miss] 'Pop's' shop around the corner from the Bedlington terrier pub and the fireworks display in the field opposite his shop [i got lost]. ;)

I have some old 8mm cine footage from the 50's/ 60's in and around Bedlington. I'll try and get some screenshots taken and i'll upload them at some point. Plessey Woods, North Ridge, Picnic etc...

My home PC is now fixed and ready to pick up this afternoon. So I'll get started over the weekend and by next week, expect some images [not sharp ones mind], but images of happier days.

That's right, he had a big red van if I remember rightly. He always sold me fruit as opposed to sweets; anapple, anorange and a nanna. His shop was around the corner from the terrier pub on that winding street that led towards the town centre.

Pop's shop was on the main road at Allgood Terrace right behind the bus stop, after changing hands it became known as Ann's Pantry

Raspberry Ruffles was my downfall.

Anyway, a pic of my late dad Joe, taken in the early 60's I believe.

Hello all, it's been a while. I was up in Bedlington the other week visiting the cemetary at West Lea, where I have quite a few reletives dwelling; Molly Napier, Ellen 'Nellie' Turnbull, Jimmy Halliday etc...

Just realized the school I went to was Stead Lane's first school near The Oval. I was there during the mid 70's - big hello if anyone may remember me. I remember the Pursey family and old Mrs Spry with the glass eye in the estate next to the terrier pub.

Even though I moved away from the town aged 7, I still have lots of fond rose tinted memories of the place.
