Hi, I'm The New Land Lady At The Dun Cow

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just want to introduce myself & ask anyone who's been in to the pub what they think of The Dun Cow in Bedlington. If you've not visited it yet since we re-opened it on 7/03/08. What would make you want to go there. We've cleaned it up & redecorated. It's looking alot better now. We live local so we know about the area a bit. So does anyone know whats happened to Bedlington. I remember when I used to drink there. It was chocka. Now the only reason you can't get served is coz the bar staff aren't on the ball. So come on give me your all. I need to know what to do to get people in.

Many thanks in advance for any input you can offer.

Hello there.

I'm no great expert on pubs myself, I'm more of a quiet glass of wine at home person.

Two things that do tend to play well with the town's drinkers: Cheap beer and good-looking barmaids.

You are right, though. Bedlington, as a drinking destination, does appear to be on the skids. Also, the isolated location of the Dun Cow means that you will get very little passing, "pub crawl" trade. Traditionally, I think the clientele is mainly people who live in the adjacent estates down that end of the town.

Keep a good pint, look after your regulars and get/keep as many darts/pool/football teams as possible going.

Good luck with it.

Yes your right. I don't really want it to be on the pub crawl circuit even though it can be a good earner anyway. Just looking for a good quality community local. We do keep a good pint & we didn't put the prices up yet just coz the gov says we should. But don't worry it will come. The locals we've met so far have continued to revisit us and seem more than happy enough. We're getting a few people back who left coz the place was run down before we came along & they seem happy enough. But we need more people coz it's boring standing around with not much to do. We've got a nice blonde barmaid on Fridays & Sundays so we got that one covered too. Although the skirt she came in tonight looks more of a belt & doesn't cover much.

Thanks for your input. And we sell a variety of wines so pop along and meet us & if you like what you see, then spread the word please.

cheers

Fair dos. I will try to pop in.

She obviously couldn't make it. Sad I know but thats what happens in this trade. It cost an absolute arm & leg to run a pub throught the brewery's these days. She also worked full time. It couldn't have been easy. I don't work full time, but still having a pub 24/7 can be quite taxing. Especially with a four year old daughter demanding my time. It's not easy believe me. I'm glad you enjoy a pint in our pub. Have you been in lately. It's lovely. So's the beer. The landlord & lady's not bad either. :D

beats me hunny

Think a few of us are planning on popping in tomorrow night (including Terrierdave). The Dun Cow is one of the pubs that we never used to go into as it was away from the main drinking circuit we used to frequent.

In my opinion, Bedlington died as a drinking place due to the pubs not investing the moeny they were earning back into the bars. Look at the bars in Morpeth, they made a fortune, invested their cash and made the bars look better, thus keeping the people coming back.

Bedlington pubs didn't, they ended up looking grotty and tatty compared to areas nearby so it wasn't a big surprise people started leaving. Also, the bars were letting too many under agers in who couldnt take the beer and therefore trouble normally kicked off.

I think if all of the bars got together and decided on improving the qaulity of the bars in a joint effort to attract people back then the good old days could return. I know that is very unlikely. The one bar I wouldn't change is the Northumberland Arms, loads of character and good beers, and a one I never used to go in, but now is the only pub I'd go in.

Fingers crossed the Dun Cow can start this trend, I'm looking forward to popping in tomorrow!

We have been living in the area for 15 years so we too, used to frequent the circuit - And Yes, I agree to the reasons for its decline.

We are looking to improve the Duny and entice the local community back. We too have plans afoot to install more beers. We are waiting for the planned installation of 2 real ale pumps, san miguel extra cold and strongow extra cold. We can put as many beers into the pub as we like as it is the brewery that picks up the cost of installation work. All we have to do is sell the beer!! Could be another 2 weeks before install but we will let u know.

Once we have a regular customer base we are more than open to requests for additional beers. If you want a specific beer and there are enough people who would drink it - just ask.

With the help of good local people giving us a try thats all we can ask. If you like it, you will come back. If you dont, well at least you were good enough to try it out.

Look forward to meeting you tomorrow. (Dont be scared to give us your opinion)
