mercuryg Posted May 1, 2012 Report Posted May 1, 2012 For the younger members, he was a masked wrestler who was famously 'unmasked' in one legendary bout, just as I was last night! Yes, some intrepid detective work by none other than Foxy and Malcolm resulted in these two esteemed gents correctly identifying me in the Red Lion! I think the grey hair, glasses and attendant laptop did it for me! The subsequent few beers and genial chat were much enjoyed - it was well past my bed time when I got home!Nice to meet you chaps, here's to doing so again.ps.. we should make this is a sport - 'identify the forum member'......
Malcolm Robinson Posted May 1, 2012 Report Posted May 1, 2012 In reply to the post title, no but I have felt like Les Kellet! Interesting factoid, Les' nephew lived in Bishops Meadow. For anyone who grew up watching Saturday teatime telly in the 60's. ps.. we should make this is a sport - 'identify the forum member'......I think foxy already does!
bediesathome Posted May 1, 2012 Report Posted May 1, 2012 less kellet was the best entortaining wrestler to watch during the 1950s at saint james hall newcastle
bediesathome Posted May 1, 2012 Report Posted May 1, 2012 sorry i got the date wrong saying the 1950s i should have posted it was the 1960s
mercuryg Posted May 1, 2012 Author Report Posted May 1, 2012 World of Sport, Saturday afternoon, those were the days...... 1
John Fox (foxy) Posted May 1, 2012 Report Posted May 1, 2012 Kendo Nagasaki? sounds a bit painful to me,........think I'll keep mine covered up! Nice to meet you Mercuryg
Malcolm Robinson Posted May 1, 2012 Report Posted May 1, 2012 ps.. we should make this is a sport - 'identify the forum member'......I think foxy already does!Tee-heee
Malcolm Robinson Posted May 1, 2012 Report Posted May 1, 2012 Wasn't Kendo Nagasaki some sort of faith healer as well??
keith lockey Posted June 24, 2012 Report Posted June 24, 2012 Me and my brother used to watch Kendo Nagasaki and Les Kellet and if I remember rightly there was Jacky Pallo (?) and the Royal Brothers. (PS I am new to all this and still trying to find my way round.) Keith.
bediesathome Posted June 24, 2012 Report Posted June 24, 2012 i used to go to st james for the wrestling on a saturday during the 1950s i enjoyed every minute of it even if it was put up
Malcolm Robinson Posted June 25, 2012 Report Posted June 25, 2012 Who was the baddie...............dark haired guy who used to throw punch on the ref's blind side, but in full view of the cameras and spectators? It might have been a put up job but they couldn't have been that good at choreography and the falls and tumbles were for real!Ken Walton every Saturday afternoon. #BTW, wrestling was the only sport ITV could get when it started that's why it was on............
Malcolm Robinson Posted June 25, 2012 Report Posted June 25, 2012 Just remembered............Mick McManus!
Canny lass Posted June 25, 2012 Report Posted June 25, 2012 (edited) Wasn't there a whole McManus family in wrestling? Used to be two brothers in a tag team - Mick was one of them I think? Edited June 25, 2012 by Canny lass
John Fox (foxy) Posted June 28, 2012 Report Posted June 28, 2012 Used to be two brothers in a tag team - Mick was one of them I think?Do you not mean a Tarts Team? Big Cissies
Canny lass Posted June 28, 2012 Report Posted June 28, 2012 Do you not mean a Tarts Team? Big Cissies Now don't go spoiling all my memories! I've already had a shock finding out that every minute of it was put up!
bediesathome Posted June 29, 2012 Report Posted June 29, 2012 when jackie pallo was wrestling at saint james hall he used to put his aponents arms behind their head and tie them in knots then he would cross their legs and do the same with them. .can you believe it is true? still enjoyed the night . happy times
keith lockey Posted June 30, 2012 Report Posted June 30, 2012 Looking back now I can't believe I actually enjoyed watching the wrestling on World of Sport. It is so obviously staged - but not then to a young lad. As a bit of trivia Jackie 'Mr TV' Pallo was a pantomine star and a bit of an actor. He appeared in an episode of The Avengers opposite Patrick Macnee & Honour Blackman.

keith lockey Posted June 30, 2012 Report Posted June 30, 2012 Yeah, he played a gravedigger or something. I used to watch the Avengers and was terrified of the cybernauts. Hold on...which one's are in Dr Who - cybermen or cybernauts? Anyway the cyberwotsits had me scurrying for the back of the settee.
Malcolm Robinson Posted June 30, 2012 Report Posted June 30, 2012 I think that's why the picture is titled .........sexton.... Keith........(.Alan you could be right! )Don't think he ever played Sexton Blake.
Malcolm Robinson Posted June 30, 2012 Report Posted June 30, 2012 Keith........Take your time and look carefully...............one is a Cybernaut the other a Cyberman. It might be a cyberman is a cybernaut without his overcoat on, but maybe not???????
keith lockey Posted June 30, 2012 Report Posted June 30, 2012 Malcolm, I honestly couldn't remember which was which!!! (So sad, I should get out more!) I went on YouTube to check and got the Avengers episodes. Patrick Macnee never changed throughout the series! He looked the same in the last one as he did in the first. But you could be correct - a cybernaut could be an undercover cyberman. But I bet they wouldn't have messed with Jackie Pallo - submit...no no no...submit...no no no.
Alan Lockey Posted June 30, 2012 Report Posted June 30, 2012 Dont say you werent warned Malcolm. Why do you think i moved away so young ;-)
keith lockey Posted June 30, 2012 Report Posted June 30, 2012 Dont say you werent warned Malcolm. Why do you think i moved away so young ;-)I'm getting out of sync messages regarding my cyberwotsits. Just remember, Malcolm and brother Alan. I was brought up thinking Torchie the Battery Boy was real. So is it my fault i can't tell a cybernaut from a cyberman. (Anyway, Torchie the Battery boy was ever ready.)
bediesathome Posted June 30, 2012 Report Posted June 30, 2012 can any one enlighten me of some ot the wrestlers names that that were used at saint james hall in newcastle during the 1950s ? thanking you.
