Maggie/915 Posted September 4, 2013 Report Posted September 4, 2013 Anyone any idea who made these bikes for the coop. This is my old bike and it seems like a very old friend.Obviously I have dug it up!
Alan Edgar (Eggy1948) Posted September 4, 2013 Report Posted September 4, 2013 I always thought they had their own brand - CWS = Co-operative Wholesale Society - or as we said our bikes were made from - Copper Wire & String - unlike the fortunate few that had Raleigh's.
Maggie/915 Posted September 5, 2013 Author Report Posted September 5, 2013 I am just not sure EggyMy research has drawn a blank and has raised more questions. The old bike is great to ride and much better than a new bike that was bought one Christmas because the old one was thought embarrassing.Guess this will encourage jokes.
Vic Patterson Posted September 5, 2013 Report Posted September 5, 2013 Here is some interesting reading about CWS bicycles, but I think the logo on your bicycle might be a Royal Enfield. http://oldbike.wordpress.com/1939-cws-co-op-delivery-cycle/https://www.google.ca/search?q=royal+enfield+bicycle&rlz=1C1CHMO_en&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=65ooUvbIH8XJhAfGmYD4Ag&ved=0CDsQsAQ&biw=1280&bih=687
Maggie/915 Posted September 5, 2013 Author Report Posted September 5, 2013 Thanks Vic!It is interesting because it seems prior to 1950 they were made by one company and then later maybe made in Birmingham. One son is researching because he is into bikes but it also seems they are worth something now. There is absolutely no way I am selling but it may become a 'Grand Torino' moment. If you have seen the film.

Maggie/915 Posted September 5, 2013 Author Report Posted September 5, 2013 Now there is a challenge.Could end up withCall Wansbeck Soon.Cyclist was stupid.
Canny lass Posted September 5, 2013 Report Posted September 5, 2013 Anyone any idea who made these bikes for the coop. This is my old bike and it seems like a very old friend.Obviously I have dug it up! I also had such a trusty steed for getting to and from school in Nedderton village. I don't remember that emblem though. On mine there was only a very simple CWS in gold-coloured lettering.
Maggie/915 Posted September 6, 2013 Author Report Posted September 6, 2013 Happy Days the school was a good place to go to.
Symptoms Posted September 7, 2013 Report Posted September 7, 2013 Maggs, make sure you bring it inDAWES at night or somebody'll nick it.
Maggie/915 Posted September 7, 2013 Author Report Posted September 7, 2013 It's the enemy within Synptoms. One son informed me of its value.Seems I could put it on a website for it to be used as a prop in a film etc.Who would have thought a little bike from Blyth Coop could be worth money all these years later.
Vic Patterson Posted September 7, 2013 Report Posted September 7, 2013 I remember in my day the "Dawes Double Blue†was the most wanted racer!
Maggie/915 Posted September 8, 2013 Author Report Posted September 8, 2013 I am learning all these new/old makes of push bikes!Cars, motorbikes etc, I am a lost cause! My old bike is a bit of a bone shaker but that adds character. My favourite car is still a Renault 4.If they still made them it would be my car of choice. My kids, sadly, would hide if I went to collect them from school in the Renault 4Happiness does not equate with lots of money being spent.I have failed to get that through to certain of my kids.Maybe that is another topic.
