March 17, 201412 yr Hello. I lived in the Netherton miner's institute from 1958 until I joined the army in 1977. My dad was caretaker of the Tute and I have some fond memories of the place. Apart from my time in the army and some years living and working at St Mary's at Stannington I have lived in Bedlingtonshire all my life and I currently live in Guidepost. All the best to everyone AB
March 17, 201412 yr Greetings, AB, welcome to the forum. (PS. My brother worked at St. Mary's Hospital. What years were you there, he might know you.
March 17, 201412 yr Author Hi, if his first name is the same as mine (Alan) and his wife has a letter z in her name and he ran a pub quiz down south (between Camlington and Seaton Burn) for a while he will definitely know me and I know him. I last bumped into him in Manor Walks a few weeks ago. Apologies if wrong. I worked at St Mary's between 78 and 95. Cheers!

Yep, it must be him, you didn't add that he was fat and ugly and had the disposition of a warthog with piles. I'll pass the message on to him and send you a personal message in a moment. Cheers.
March 18, 201412 yr Author I've just seen a picture of the tute in the gallery which is a picture of the caretaker's 3 story house which we lived in. It was a magic place to live in as our parents let us have access to the whole building when it was closed. There were three full size billiard boards and a table tennis board, a reading room and another room upstairs and downstairs there was the main hall with a dance hall and a proper stage. The back end had some rooms where Dr Mulligan and Dr Stone ran a surgery for Netherton one or two afternoons a week. We were very lucky as the house had a bathroom and hot and cold running water, mind we needed it after we had been playing on the pit heaps or over the fields. Netherton Colliery was a bit of a paradise for kids in those days. AB
March 18, 201412 yr I have very many happy memories of going to the colliery school. The feeling of a community that got on together and looked out for each other has been inspirational in my life.Education is so much more than passing exams.
