Choppington United

I know its a long shot but does any one have or know where i can get some information on Choppington united in the 1920's they placed in the Ashington and District League?

@Coatsy - I know there are a couple of members that have delved into the history of the Bedlington Football teams and I believe the most info they found was from the Northumberland Archives =  the old newspaper records held at the  Woodhorn Colliery Museum.

i was there today and just started to look, but the problem i hit so far is the main paper at the time was the Blyth paper and they mention the Ashington and District Leagues but only really the fixtures and results nothing about players or match reports ect

When I did the research into Bedlington Mechanics FC and then widen it to all the local pit village teams in Bedlingtonshire, I focused on after WW2, from 1945-1965. I have some detail regards various Choppington teams that played in either the Miners Welfare League, the Ashington Welfare League or there was one (Choppington High Pit FC)who  played in the Coquetdale League. However, on looking at these teams after WW2 there is no mention of a Choppington United FC.

You might do better searching old copies of the Morpeth Herald, as well as the Blyth News and/or Ashington Post.

I did try and find some details of Bedlington United FC from the very early 1900's - 1930, but really struggled as the newspapers only carried reports etc. direct from the clubs. If no-one bothered to report on the teams and results then there wasn't anything in the papers.

If you are on Facebook then there is a group under Choppington. I am not a member of that group but I have been in touch with the Admin - Brian Jenkinson - and I copied your two comments into the message I sent him. Brian did not say that he had info that you are after just suggested you join the group and he may be able to help.

@Ovalteeny i have looked thought the Blyth News and they only really report the Fixtures and results, Now the Morpeth Herald did no match reports for all the teams in that league but the dates i want is when there no Morpeth Herald papers anywhere in the archives.

Hi Coatsy,and welcome to the forum,mate!

Now a knaa nowt aboot football,or sport generally,but aa have had the same trouble even just trying ti find photo's of the Choppington High Pit,cos the photo on thi Info board at the entrance ti thi pit isn't the High Pit at aal!

Somebody musta dug a picture of any old pit from somwhere else,ti stick on the board,just ti let visitor see what a pit looked from the top of the pit heap..or the cage wheels or whatever..there is no info to be found other than what we have on this forum,in the gallery,such as my own Father as a laddie in 1929-ish,and pictures of the houses lining the pit road.

Thi photo of the Miners underground is genuine,cos aa worked with aal the men on that photo,at some time or another,when I was a young Girder lad.

What I do know is that the Dreyer Family,Dor Dreyer,Freddie Dreyer,and their Fathers before them,aal played Cricket,for Choppington,and Bomarsund,Stakeford.

Just wildly guessing , mind,but a lot of lads that I knew who played one sport,also excelled in others.

Would a delve into the Dreyer Family's Ancestor's mebbe lead to a link with the Football club?

The High Pit musta been just a tax fiddle for the Coal-owners,cos it was hidden away from sight owa the fields,and was just a wriggly tin shed set-up...with no Real investment outlay on the surface buildings,OR the underground set-up..Dangerous hell-hole altogether,so it appears no-one wanted to visit to take pics...no records of production broken,except for Joe Barratt during the war years..[another story],and no newspaper articles that I can find....just a forgotten shack of a pit...and Old Ned Cushing [the training Officer who knew my Father....in 1929!!]...said to me on the first day there,starting in the winter of 1959...."It's a canny,friendly little pit Wilma,and  a think ye'll get on weel!....."

Whey it was friendly aal reet,sum real nice Choppington folk,my home village when very young,but the pit was owt but canny!!
