The nights are lighter now and life is starting to get back to normal so on my return there are people to see and places to visit which haven't been seen/visited for a couple of years. Then there's my lovely garden which is crying out for some springtime TLC.

And thank you from me, it's been a very interesting and testing time for most people but your quiz has been a great distraction from covid, and a great learning experience ! I thought I was past that! I hope you have a great summer and enjoy catching up with your friends and family. Thank you.

No, Covid hasn't taken a grip on us again (yet), I just thought you should have something to keep you out of mischief while I'm celebrating Christmas here today, one day earlier than you, as is the tradition. It might even keep you out from under the feet of those slaving away in the kitchen up to their eyes in brussel sprouts, mince pies and turkey giblets. There is no (well, not much) Covid but you're still allowed to use the internet so get yourself a drink, put your feet up and get cracking!

Christmas special:

  1. In which century was the term ‘Xmas’ coined?

  2. Which saint is celebrated on 26th December?

  3. How many reindeer feature in the poem ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas’?

  4. What is the name of the last ghost to visit Scrooge in ‘A Christmas Carol’?

  5. Why did the other reindeer laugh at Rudolph?

  6. Stollen is the traditional fruit cake of which country?

  7. In which direction should you stir sweet mincemeat for good luck?

  8. What is a female turkey called?

  9. Before turkey, a traditional English Christmas dinner included a pig’s head smothered in mustard. True or false?

  10. Part of the Christmas celebrations in Oaxaca City, Mexico, is Noche de Rábanas. Which food gives the festival its name?

  11. Which Christmas food is considered to bring good luck if eaten on all of the twelve days of Christmas?

  12. Who designed the first Christmas card, sent in 1843?

  13. Which country is the largest exporter of Christmas trees?

  14. How many days do we have between Christmas and the Epiphany?

  15. Which of the following was NOT a gift given by the wise men to the baby Jesus: Frankincense, silver, myrrh, gold?

  16. Is there a Mrs Santa Clause?

  17. Which country is credited with the Christmas beverage Eggnog?

  18. From which country is the Christmas tree, traditionally placed in Trafalgar Square, London, a gift?

  19. Who tracks Santa’s location on Christmas Eve? Bonus point for when it started.

  20. In 1946 Nat King Cole recorded a song about “chestnuts roasting on an open fire”. What was the name of the song?

I’ll bet you didn’t know ….

Prior to the turkey being introduced as Christmas fayre, people ate geese, boar’s head and even peacocks at Christmas. Henry VIII was the first to enjoy a turkey on Christmas day.

Answer = I didn’t - but if I had of waited 24 hours before starting on the quiz I would have. I watched QI serie 19 episode 8 and it was on there and Sally Phillips 9comedian) gave the answer

Sorry you've had to wait. It's been a hectic week!

Here are the answers to the Christmas quiz:

1.

1.      1920s

2.      7 swans a swimming

3.      221 feet

4.      No number is mentioned. The book of Matthew, the only gospel to mention the Kings, doesn’t say how many there were only that they brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. We just assume that they were three because of the three gifts.

5.      Kentucky Fried Chicken. It’s so popular you have to order several months in advance or join queues that have started to build on Christmas Eve.

6.      Iceland. They’re a canny bunch of lads but if you’ve been badly behaved you’ll just get a rotten potato. They ‘ve got some great names too: Sausage -swiper, Door-sniffer and Window-peeper, to name just a few.

7.      Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

8.      Donald Duck

9.      Light Emitting Diode

10.   Newcastle-upon-Tyne

11.   A 50-pence piece.

12.   Isaac Newton

13.   Capricorn

14.   The Indian Ocean

15.   December 26

16.   Jolly careful

17.   c) making a noise. (It’s no wonder that baby was awake!)

18.   Paris

19.   Donner

20.   False. The average gain is 1 lb.

I'll take the opportunity of wishing each and everyone of you a happy, prosperous year in 2024. May it be filled with health, wealth and happiness. I'm off tomorrow morning to celebrate an 80th birthday in Scotland. New Year's Eve and a birthday rolled into one. It's bound to be a good one! I remember (just about) the 70th birthday party and if it's half as good it'll be great.

Take good care of yourselves and we'll meet again next year.
