Hi. Long shot but wondering if any photos of Market Street in 1901-1911 exist. Hoping that they might show a butchers shop that my Great Grandfather (Henry Hub) either owned or worked in.

Any info on the above also very welcome.

Thanks.

Welcome to the group @Richard Norton. Just noticed your posting - don't know how I missed.

Can't say I've seen the name Hub Butchers mentioned in the Market Place and I did a search of the Discussion pages using "Hub Butchers" but nothing came up. If you enter a phrase into the Search section add quotes around it otherwise the system searches for every seperate word in the phrase rather than just the whole phrase:).

I'll have a look through the old photos from that era, probably only a couple,  and see if I can find anything but can't recall seeing that name.

Hi @Richard Norton and welcome to the forum. Here is a map f and some photos that might interest you. The map is from 1922. In 1911 Henry was living and working in the building located between the Post Office and the  Workingmen's Club. I've underlined these in red on the 1922 map so you can see the approximate area within the Market Place.

In the following photo of the Market Place (1930) I've arrowed the house in which Henry lived and worked - the one with the white awning.  I have no idea if he rented or owned the property but as he states that worked "at home" it's safe to say he lived on his work premises. The building is easy to locate from the 1901 and 1911 census records where it is always in the same location in relation to The Turks Head public house (the first  PH to the right of my red line on the map).

This next photo, date unknown) shows the market place from a different angle. I've arrowed the building again and you can clearly see the Post Office to its right, though Hub's Pork Butchers has now become Kiddies Corner. The Tudor style building to the far right is the Howard Arms. The larger building to its left is the Turks Head. The Fish & Chip shop to the left of Henry's house was previously the Workingmen's club - Henry's neighbour in 1911.

I hope this is of some help.

PS Your great grandfather was still at the same address in Bedlington in 1914, before moving to Walker, Newcastle.  His business appears in Kelly's Directory of that year.

@Richard Norton a couple of different photos to what @Canny lass has posted for you plus an entry in the 1905 Bennett's Business Directory that was posted on the Facebook local group 'Past Time History Group' by @johndawsonjune1955 showing the the same name and profession that CannyLass found in the Kelly's Directory 0f 1914.

In a book on Bedlington 'Then and Now' published by Evan Martin in 2005  there is an image showing the shop @Canny lass identified above on the back page but iunfortunately can't make out the name of the shop :-

Inside Evan's book is the Then photo with some info but 'Hub' doesn't get a mention:( just that it's an early 20thc photo :-

The latest Google street view image is 2023 and it looks like the original building, with the roof restructured was still there :-

There is another photo of the area and it was originally posted with the comment 'early 20th centuary' but again the name on the shop can't be read :-

This photo shows the shop more clearly but it's a 1930's or 40's photo and the name on the shop is STOKER :-
