I have never heard of Burdon's Buildings but I did remember a photo @John Fox (foxy) had posted of the area and someone named Smith's & Marshall's Buildings just past the Dun Cow - see reply to Janet Guest above.

I've marked, with a yellow star, where I think the Dun Cow was and then added a red blotch along where I think the buildings in question were.

I know at the Top End of Bedlington along from the Wharton Arms is Burdon Terrace but never heard Burdon Building's mentioned before.

Has anyone on this site heard of Burdon's Buildings?

I knoe the Burdon family were involved in many thinks within Bedlington eg St Cuthbert's Church

but I have never heard of Burdon's Buildings

On the Bygone Bedlington group Michael Myers posted an old map that names the 3 sets of buildings, + the house/flat numbers, so the info I have on Foxy's photo needs updating.

Sorry, Alan, but I have to disagree. I don’t think that Marshall’s Buildings appear in that photo at all. I believe that what we see, moving east from the Dun Cow towards Bedlington Bank, are: The Dun Cow PH, Smith’s Buildings and Burdon Buildings.

Looking at the 1960 map, Marshall’s Buildings are free-standing and don’t connect to Burdon’s Buildings in any way. Looking at the photo, there are no free-standing buildings.

The 1960s map shows Marshalls Buildings as protruding further towards the road than Burdon’s Buildings. That isn't so in the photo. The photo shows a slight curvature of the pavement at the end of the building nearest the camera and this suggests to me that it accommodates the protruding end of Marshalls Buildings. The pavement lacks kerbstones suggesting a road leading in between Burdon’s- and Marshall’s Buildings, as can be seen on the 1960’s map.

Looking at the census returns from 1911 – 1939:

Smith’s Buildings consists of 7 dwellings with a total of 13 rooms. For me, it seems unlikely that the small building you name as Smith’s buildings can house 13 rooms so I suggest that Smith’s buildings are in fact the 2 buildings with 7 dwellings nearest the Dun Cow, as shown on the 1960 map.

Burdon’s Buildings consists of 5 dwellings with a total of 10 rooms. There are 5 entrance doors on the first building in the photo.

Marshalls Buildings consists of 6 dwellings with a total of 12 rooms. That would equate nicely with the 1960s map.

@Canny lass I agree with you. I know many of the Buildings housed numerous families in just a couple of rooms each and whenn I first labelled the photo I was just speculating.

It was only when I enlarged that map Michael Myers posted and it showed how the rooms/houses were allocated that I doubted what I had done to the photo.

Knowing you would delve into the census etc. I was waiting for you to view all info above😊and as expected you have come up with what I would say was concrete proof of the location of the 3 sets of Buildings👍.

I should get to my old PC and software tomorrow and I will correct my labelling on Foxy's photo just to point to Smith's and Burdon's Buildings and also add - ' Marshall's Buildings used to be here' pointing at the ground.

I will also update the Bygone Bedlington posting of your findings👌

@Vic Patterson I know what you mean. As it happens I haven't even attepted to load Windows on my old PC for a long time. These days the old PC is only used for clarting with photos with Microsoft Digital Image Pro 10 software.

I think the last upgrade on the old PC was for Windows-13.
