  3. Haha! Thanks pilgrim. I remember the Fukawi from my younger days, along with ..... The Oomegoolie Bird. It dives from a great height,, pulls out at the last second, and yells 'Oo-me-goolies!' And not forgetting the Winkee-Wankee Bird. When it Winks it W@nks, and when it W@nks it Winks. 'No lady, don't throw sand in it's eye!!!' There are others too from the good old 'We're off to see the Wild West show song.' But I digress. Back to the slogan competition ... Bedlington, has a proud mining heritage, so how about, 'Why would you visit Bedlington? It's the PITS!'

  5. Posted in the sixtownships Facebbok site and might just be of interest to members on this site :- Anne Bower posted - I live in a small Township near Windsor Ontario. Every week we have a free newpaper delivered a bit like the News Post Leader but not covering as big an area This morning when I opened it there was an article entitled First World War Project Seeks 'Citizen Historians' and then goes on - A global project has been launched wich will research the lives and wartime service of 'Geordies' from the North East of England - in the armies of Australia, New Zealand, Newfoundland and Canada. 'Dominion Geordies in WW1 - funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council will seek to 'crowd source' research by recruiting volunteer researchers. The article is quite long but Information about the project can be found at - http://dominiongeordiesinww1.co.uk/ .They are looking for people in the North East of England, Former Dominions and beyond. I thought some of the members of this group might be interested.

  6. it makes me wonder now how the present children would cope with our lives then? (outdoor toilets and a tin bath which was hung in the yard outside every house!! manual washing machines in the 'wash house' which had a copper , a poss tub, one of them ridged boards, and the mangle) I despair when I see a group of kids walking along together and none are talking to each other, but all are 'texting' someone else, why bother socialising??? Its even worse when you see folk in their 40's doing the same!!! Those days of a couple of sandwiches and a bottle of 'waters and robson' pop (and delivered to the door by the 'pop' wagon!!!) was a feast for a day out - there was something about the taste of the pop during the course of the day when the bottle ended up with crumbs floating in the pop - food and drink in one!!! is the black bridge still standing??

  7. safe as hooses ...... strangely enough there was more probability of being subject to some form of molestation/abuse between 1940 and the late 60's than from the 70's to now!!!!! the difference is - the press and the advent of television and the banner headlines about what was once 'unspeakable' and went largely unreported, the fear factor that sells papers!! but, yes, the 'darling buds of may' era - that time of nostalgia and great happiness that occludes the hardship and perils - but we lived through and made us what we are. I do wonder what folk in 50 yrs time, when I am long gone, will look back on and see as highlights of how they spent their youth - how does texting and speaking with thumbs compare with a walk with the dog and dare I say bird nesting and being at one with the natural world all around us??

  9. Remembering what happened is of huge importance. We all need to make sure this type of 'horror' never happens again . 'No man is an Island' humanity is respecting other people regardless of race or creed Sadly sometimes 'Satan' comes as a man of peace.

  10. We are a long way from 'Hartley Pans for sailors, Bedlington for Nailers' Maybe that was the slogan that got people here to buy , much needed, nails. Now we have History , Heritage and so much more. There has to be a simple effective slogan. One concern has to be that, when we get people into the town, we need the simple things. Parking ,public conveniences not to mention the odd shop or two in the well named 'Market Place'. Sadly five years of planning and development may be too long to wait.
