  1. While the original idea of the Doomsday Disc was laudable, it has surely been overtaken by technology, the pace of which couldn't reasonably have been foreseen at that time. The fact that just about no one now can read the original 12" discs or data format is telling. "Rebooting" it not a worthwhile use of resources I think. Very much a we've suddenly got this "vast" amount of digital storage, and we need to find something to use it for project. As far as Bedders is concerned: clicking on the two map links is telling. Particularly so if you attend to the very bottom of the map!
  2. A drop of $100/oz or so doesn't look like a crash. More like some of the heat being taken out of the extreme speculation. I think we'd have to see sub $1000/oz for it to be called a crash - not entirely impossible once reality dawns on some. There's no doubt that gold production is increasing to meet the demand at today's heady prices. Not terribly useful stuff nowadays anyway; one minor point that GB was right on.
  3. I've taken the liberty of promoting this to a front page news item. Also fixed a couple of minor typos, and assumed you meant to say disrespecting not disrepecting. A photo, though not essential, would help a lot! Really great news. If you require free webpages on Bedlington.co.uk just ask - even your own domain (burnside.bedlington.co.uk maybe?) PM me, or indeed any of the moderators for help. On the new machine you can now to have your own FTP account, so your own webmaster can upload your own pages. There is of course no charge for any of this. Also, you can start your own forum (which can optionally be password protected by you) on the general board.
  4. You don't need to import people to do that, you just use good old local Labour Party talent. Seems to help if you can preside over the mass slaughter of innocent kiddies too! Mind you those were the days when you could cover up just about anything. A nod and a wink to the right people; a hint of a gong down the line; a peerage to the really compliant big shots; and, if all else failed, a D Notice to gag the press - sorted! Malc. do you think an elected P. Com. is going to put their head on the block to cover up something like another Hillsborough? Be grateful for what crumbs of democracy we are thrown by the political elite, and then keep on asking for more. One of these days we'll get asked to consent to something that really matters - like our de-facto EU membership! One of these days they might even notice that we now live in a data-centric society, and that you can take a vote near instantaneously, at minuscule cost, and as often as you want - so there's actually no need for an "elected representative".
  5. In good old civil service fashion of course they will dig around for any possible justification they can fabricate after the event. The couple were already fostering the kids, and doing it very well! Fact is it should never have been any sort of factor in any decision and was downright loony left! So only 36% of the electorate now? Just give it a few more months!
  6. Only after the jump!
  7. They disappear into the budget of MyURL.co.uk - also a Nominet full member. Did you notice that we have always have the latest IP Board software, and often before it is released? That's because we often test bits prior to release... because... because... If you'd feel happier with a few ads, that can easily be arranged.
  8. You mean like living in socialist Rotherham? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-20535008
  9. ...and in the news today: Xenophobic Germany or just a little common sense dawning on our partners in the cartel? To call UKIP xenophobic is the sort of disapplication of common sense that the PC left take refuge in. The sort of thing that the morons at Rotherham social services go in for - completely lost on them the fact that the children they were trying to separate from their UKIP supporting, loving, foster parents were in fact of Eastern European origin. Look up the meaning of the word xenophobic, because it doesn't mean what the extreme left want it to mean, and has a second meaning too!
  10. Flattered by your concern Sym, and be reassured that circumstances are now entirely different. For a start we are no longer dependant on the solvency of a small US hosting company, and have no less than three geo-diverse servers on line these days two of which are in the UK and wholly owned. It's no longer a one-man show, and in fact it's as many people who want to come on board and do something. The position of "editor-in-chief" is still open if you want the job? But, be warned, the pay is poor. I'm very concious of the need to put things on a somewhat more formal basis, as so much that is Bedlington passes from pillar to post and sooner or later dies a death. That's not going to happen here even over my dead body! A community-run and civic resource it must always remain, far from the clutches of American megacorps, and - quite unlike our government - wholly democratic.
  11. Wrong about what? Wrong about letting anyone who wants to live off our state entry into our country (thus packing out the formerly dwindling ranks of something-for-nothing socialism, as per the Blair/Brown/Balls hidden agenda)? Wrong about not funding the tired old men of Europe and their gravy-train politics? Wrong about getting back to trading freely with the rest of the world and not participating in the biggest cartel in history? Wrong about the need for a party that provides a true alternative to the three woolly social democratic parties we now have? Wrong about actually having the long-overdue referendum on the EU (not The Common Market), and not simply "cast iron" promising one, then having total amnesia on the matter the moment they get into power? Wrong about not giving away eight billion pounds a year on an entry ticket to a club that we don't need to be a member of, when that money could be recirculating in our own economy producing jobs and services for British people? I submit that Nigel Farage is "a brilliant politician and an extraordinary public speaker" because he's only saying what everyone knows to be true, and because he doesn't need to fall back on the usual politico's evasions, subterfuges and diversions. i.e. telling the truth is actually quite easy, because you don't have to guard and pre-filter every word. I think that what upsets you is the irrefutable logic, together with the "class" of people he draws much of his support from.
  12. Do not install this one unless you have time to waste! Lots and lots of people reporting problems and I've wasted hours recovering a machine three times from the black screen with mouse cursor curse! Hide it until M$ fixes at least some of the problems. When you do try it make sure that it's the only update you run - i.e. don't let any other updates install at the same time, and reboot the machine a couple of times after you do, before you try doing anything else. This is an "Optional" update related to video and not a security update, so you don't need to install it anyway!
  13. Somewhat more LD voters (even % wise) transferred to UKIP than Tory voters - which is strange considering the LD love affair with Europe and the fact that the majority of Tories are "eurosceptic". This means that a significant proportion of LD supporters don't share the leadership fixation with Europe either, and only support the party for their record on management at a local level. I think they've shot their temporary cred at offering a real alternative at national level, and will revert to doing OK in local elections, but not being a credible force for change. Nige's "We'd have won if the Conservatives hadn't split our vote!" was the quote of the night. The traditional parties haven't woken up to new and unstoppable forces at work - just like the tired old men of Europe haven't worked out that their gravy train is rapidly heading towards the buffers.
  14. Malc: On another thread you doubted my assertion that UKIP was becoming a serious force in national politics. Percentages: I think it more appropriate to post this here than the other thread because it's really a reflection of public opinion regarding "Dave's Big Speech". Like myself, few believe his promises any more. My easy prediction is that come the Euro elections Rumpy Pumpy is going to be facing a solid block of UKIP MEPS, being the majority UK party, a prospect which he's already very aware of.
  15. He might be the Pope and infallible, but I've never entirely bought the story that he sat in the seat, but never pressed the fire button. Maybe he only just remembered something? Or more likely this time around he sat in the seat, but never pressed the fire button - and should have!?
  16. From the plot of Kiss Me Deadly I think you probably are wrong. Chances are it's in this list: http://uk.imdb.com/k...wspaper-editor/ ...or try refining the search by changing the words at the end of the URL (separated by hyphens). Do let us know the gripping ending!
  17. Acrobat and Reader XI Feb 20, 2013 11.0.02 OOC* Latest release. This patch fixes specific security issues. Acrobat and Reader X Feb 20, 2013 10.1.6 OOC* Latest release. This patch fixes specific security issues. Acrobat and Reader 9.x and 8.x Feb 20, 2013 9.5.4 OOC* Latest release. 20. I just love the completely out-of-the-blue "Maybe because I am Jewish"! You won't do exactly what I want so you must be an anti-semite seems to work on lots of politicos. Haven't heard much from Cherie Blair since her little critique of Israeli treatment of the Palestinians have we? Some guy extracted a sample of one of our budget products once. I think we did get a half-baked magazine review out of it, but we were later ashamed we fell for the pitch! I'm surprised Eben didn't explain what a non-profit foundation means in real English, a concept obviously completely lost on "Steve"!
  21. Make and model always helps. Also what's the actual problem? Those will help any repairer advise you about likely cost and viability, and whether they can take it on at all.
  22. On the old political principal to never have a referendum when the vote is going to go against you, the politicos are going to cook up an excuse to go back on their promises. So many past promises, so much hot air. And they wonder why the public is disillusioned with political parties! Political manifestos - no wonder no one ever gives them the time of day! But at least we know how the Tories and the LD's say they stand. How does the Laurel and Hardy act on Labour's front bench stand? Seems to depend on which day you ask them, or which fag packet they are reading off the back of.

  24. Great work Brett, but I doubt that facebrook thing will ever catch on!
  25. It's a law of nature - you never see the BIG event coming! Humans prattle on about largely inconsequential things (so called global warming; holes in ozone layer; horse meat; etc), but nature smiles and does its own thing. A lesson to the anti-nuclear/anti-progress lobby. They make a song and dance about inconsequential levels of radiation, yet nature bombards us with it constantly, and sets off the equivalent of a nuke over our heads without any warning. One day it will be more than an odd few tons of rock and poof - we'll all go the way of the dinosaurs! So they'd better start their protest campaign agin nature right now. Though they would do well to note that the only way we will ever have a tiny chance of escaping is if we intelligently pursue a nuclear future.
