  1. "Midway was designated an overlay National Wildlife Refuge on April 22, 1988 while still under the primary jurisdiction of the Navy. From August 1996, the general public could visit the atoll through study ecotours.[17] This program ended in 2002,[18] but another visitor program was approved and began operating in March 2008.[8][19] This program operated through 2012, but was suspended for 2013 due to budget cuts.[20] On October 31, 1996, President Bill Clinton signed Executive Order 13022, which transferred the jurisdiction and control of the atoll to the United States Department of the Interior. The FWS assumed management of the Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. The last contingent of Navy personnel left Midway on June 30, 1997 after an ambitious environmental cleanup program was completed."
  2. "As part of the Base Realignment and Closure process, the Navy facility on Midway has been operationally closed since September 10, 1993, although the Navy assumed responsibility for cleaning up environmental contamination at Naval Air Facility Midway Island."

  9. Is that a 1981 Moscovitch? What a car, about a ton and a half with cable brakes! Might as well of thrown a rope with a blacksmith's anvil attached out of the window. They lasted that long I never sold a set of brake shoes for them. Dealership along the Morpeth road at Guidepost.

  15. John, Seem to remember Bedlington used to hold canary shows too? I know Ronnie that had the general dealers on Glebe Road used to breed them and show them.
  16. As daft as it seems the fuel, wooden pellets, for this biomass will be coming from CANADA????????? Where is one of the largest forest in Europe? At their open day they did say there would be £100K PA for community benefit, I do hope someone got RES to write that down!
  17. You should have attended the planning enquiry held in the Community Centre. It was like a comedy of errors and all on the side of the planning department! The only good thing to come out was that Dystart didn't ask for costs or the public purse would have had to pay for their very expensive London lawyer and his entourage! At the end of the day because of several mistakes and errors by the planning department the judge had no other recourse than to award Dystart full planning for their original application, or the one which they put it as an opening salvo and one they would have negotiated on!
  18. Its got planning permission for 9 houses Eileen.
  19. There would seem one small problem tomtom.............even though this was promised it isn't actually happened as yet?????????????? Plus one of the 'traders' spilt a can of paint on the stone flags last week! The Town council have been TOLD to keep out of it, NCC are going to sort it. Personally I can't see why the second-hand traders can't be relocated (there is obviously a call for their stuff) and a much more proactive stance taken with regard to getting 'quality' traders back in our main market.
  20. Ahem..........
  21. King Æthelred II might not agree Maggie!
  22. And who is holding a lot of the paper............Eurobanks!

  24. Looks like a covering of backsides could well be on the cards at the CO-OP bank and not just the directors, CO-OP sponsored Labour MP's, Lib Dems, Unions...oh dear! Only way out seems to wipe out bondholders who in this case will be made up of Mr and Mrs Average who worked all their lives and trusted in this supposedly ethical mutual model. Can't just bail this one out without it looking like political party support! But then we now have the Cyprus model to work with!
  25. BTW, The cleared pathways, litter picks and new picnic tables in now have all been done and got by a very small group of volunteers from the Friends of Gallagher Park group. Last year they got second place in the Love Northumberland awards, this year their honorary chair George Webster got an achievement award. If anyone is interested in finding out more or possibly doing something get along to the Friends of Gallagher Park meetings held in the East Bedlington Community Centre.
