  1. I now know work started back in 2015 but although I have past the old coop building many times in the past couple of years, and noticed there was work going on for the East Bedlington Community Centre, I never knew what they were planning Platform 1. Having noticed @Les Dixon's post about the gig last Friday I had a search to see exactly where the gig was taking place in Bedlington Station and that's when I found out it was the old Coop building on Station Street. My first real memory of the coop building is that's the place, The Dole Office (Department of Employment), we went upstairs in the building to sign on when we left school in 1965 and I have no idea what use it has been put to over the last 52 years. Some info I have found on line about the project are :- http://www.eastbedlingtonpc.org.uk/hall.php?id=126 East Bedlington Community Centre The Trustees of East Bedlington Community Centre are excited to announce that they have been awarded £845,715 from Big Lottery Reaching Communities (Buildings). It is the 3rd largest award to be made in England and the largest single amount for Northumberland. The award is the final piece of the capital fund jigsaw, with funding already confirmed from East Bedlington Parish Council (£450,000) and CISWO (£48,500). To read the full press realease click here. Work started on the refurbishment early in 2016 and is estimated to take around 28 weeks to complete. The Centre is managed by a committee of local people, supported by East Bedlington Parish Council who act as Custodian Trustees. Hire charges start from £10 per hour for use of the main hall. We are now taking bookings from 1st April 2017. To arrange a booking please contact Ron Thornton or Jenny Tindale on 01670 828808 Press Release 9th November 2015 - full pdf docment at :- http://www.eastbedlingtonpc.org.uk/userfiles/files/Document Archive/Public/Miscellaneous/Community Centre/press release Big Lottery.pdf Extract from the document :-

  7. The green waste bin has now been removed from in front of the train, but not re-sited . Naturally it hasn't taken those that would use a public waste bin long to notice that now there is no where for the public to deposit their rubbish. Facebook - Bygone Bedlington post :- Eleanor Mclean Well done to to council for finally taking away the bins in front if the train but not soooo good to the people responsible for not finding another bin to put their litter in ????
  8. Malcolm - I think you want to get the northumberlandgazette.co.uk told what you stand for. In the article they published, Friday 7th April 2017, - Candidates standing for Northumberland council seats -, they have said - 'The full list of candidates standing for the 67 seats on Northumberland County Council has been released' - and in their List of Candidates by ward they have : Bedlington Central: David Graham (Independent); Ruben Pulle-Daley (Conservative); Alyson Wallace (Labour); Russ Wallace (Independent). Bedlington East: Bill Crosby (Independent); Val Tyler (Labour); Johnny Wearmouth (Conservative). Bedlington West: Tracy Aynsley (Conservative); Adam Hogg (Independent); Terry Johnstone (Labour); Malcolm Robinson . Get more publicity and demand an apology in their next issue. http://www.northumberlandgazette.co.uk/news/candidates-standing-for-northumberland-council-seats-1-8481539

  13. GETTING OLDER Since it was such a crappy day, I sat in my recliner and started thinking about life. I came to realize that, as I have grown older I've learned that pleasing everyone is...impossible, but pxxxing everyone off is a piece of cake. Condoms don't guarantee safe sex anymore. A friend of mine was wearing one when he was shot by the woman's husband. Lance Armstrong....I think it is just terrible and disgusting how everyone has treated Lance Armstrong, especially after what he achieved, winning seven Tour de France races, while on drugs. Hell, when I was on drugs, I couldn't even find my bike. Drive-by...Someone broke into my house last week. They didn't take my TV, just the remote. Now he drives by and changes the channels. The sick bastard!!! The Agony of Aging...On the morning that Daylight Savings Time ended, I stopped in to visit my aging friend. He was busy covering his penis with black shoe polish. I said to him, "You better get your hearing checked. You're supposed to turn your CLOCK BACK." Video Scam...Just got scammed out of $25. Bought Tiger Woods DVD entitled "My Favorite 18 Holes". Turns out it's all about golf. Absolute waste of money! Pass this on so others don't get scammed. Pregnant Prostitute...Doctor asks a pregnant prostitute, "Do you know who the father is?" "Hey, dumb ass," she replied, "If you ate a can of beans, would you know which one made you fart?"

  16. Photo from the Internet Bandsman Everything Within (IBEW) blog/site Whilst searching the www for any photos of Colliery band Banners I stumbled on a site/blog of a guy, Gavin Holman, that collects colliery brass band photos from the UK and the rest of the world. This one is from his collection but he had no other info with the photo. I posted the photo on the Facebook Bygone Bedlington & Bedlington Remembered sites and the members have come up with some names, but no date as to when it was taken.
  17. One other band photo on the IBEW site is Netherton Colliery Silver Model Prize Band. The Bass drum in each photo appears to be the same one. I have not scrutinize the faces in both photos to see if it is the same band, but you would expect that Netherton only had the one brass band.
  18. From the album: Netherton/Nedderton old photos 2

Searching the www for local pit bands and their banners Google threw up a site, Internet Bandsman's Everything Within (IBEW) that collects colliery brass band photos from the UK AND the rest of the world. I have been in contact with the web sites owner/webmaster, Gavin Holman and is aim is to allow everyone, in the world, access to the site and the info that has been gathered - extract of email from Gavin :- 'Alan Feel free to use any of the images as you wish. I'm happy to support any initiatives that maintain the links to the past and preserve memories etc. Of course, in years gone by, the miners' picnics were a major feature of the life of the pits in the north. It is sad that none remain (as far as I know) and only the Durham Miners' Gala exists as a reminder of the hundreds of pits, miners and bands of the past. Gavin' Link to the Vintage Brass Band Pictures UK index is :- http://www.ibew.org.uk/vbbp-uk.htm Unfortunately I could find no additional info to go with the each named photo - wysiwyg.
  19. Whilst looking for info on Netherton Village I came across the Northumberland Communities site and on there were some extracts from the old school logs of 1919, closed school early & 1920, the kids have been cleaned up!
