    The actual date the school opened will most likely be held in the archives of the Woodhorn Museum but I haven't checked them out so this posting is a guess at the date the school opened, based on the information currently available on the www :- The modern grammar school concept dates back to the Education Act 1944. This made secondary education after the age of 14 free. At the same time secondary education was reorganised into two basic types: grammar schools, which focused on academic studies, with the assumption that many of their pupils would go on to higher education secondary modern schools, which were intended for children who would be going into trades.

    Entrance to the school was via Albert Road and the school field adjoined the grammar school field and the Miners Welfare fields and play park.
  12. The full photo found and uploaded onto the Barrington Facebook site but the user could not get a clear copy uploaded. Merged the two photos and updated the names.
  13. No 7 is John Dickson, not Alan Dickson. No 3,7 Freda Lake ? No 21 Dot ? Kilgour. No 34 John Pierce or John Scott? No 54 is Sandra Johnson and No 45 is Marjorie Beldon.

  15. Latest rumour on the Top Club/Laird's House = 'Yeah it was sold a while ago. It been turned into an upmarket B&B upstairs and a restaurant downstairs. I can't find a planning application on the NCC site. Does anyone know if the latest rumour has any truth in it? Did notice an application (it was top of the list, so no extensive searching) on the Lion Garage.
