I`m not sure when the actual pit closed, somewhere around 1973 i think. The colliery houses were knocked down not long after. There`s only fields where the Colliery houses used to be now..

I don`t know if you`ve checked the Gallery out, but there`s lots of newspaper articles about Netherton there, thanks to Carole

Think you're right it must be about 1973 [pos a little earlier] when it closed. My dad worked there 18 years. He bought a 'G' reg mk2 ford Cortina estate with some of his redundancy money and it wasn't very old at the time.

This is a photo of Netherton the way it used to look. Four rows of pit houses (there were more houses at one time, but i think they were bulldozed because of their bad condition) the club is on the right hand side over the `green` Up near the top left of the photo is a little shop and opposite that is the miners institute.

Thanks Cympil - I've been doing a bit more research myself on Netherton Colliery and have located a book which has another good aerial photograph of Netherton together with some interesting photographs of Ashington and North Seaton. The book if you are interested is 'NORTH EAST HISTORY FROM THE AIR' by Norman McCord and was published in 1991.

Does anyone have any information, regarding a "private" concrete road which runs off the Choppington Station to Bedlington road, just south of the Choppington station to Netherton. (I think the road is still there) I was told this was first a dirt track, but was later laid with concrete. The road was used by lorries, I think there was land fill tip near Netherton, but this maybe wrong.

The miners from Choppington and Barrington, also used this road walk to Netherton pit.

I also remember seeing whippet racing at Netherton. I seem to recall the track was oval (bit like a proper dog track), which is very usual. Generally whippet racing is all is straight line.

i to can remember the whippet racing at netherton colliery i was a trapper (for those that dont what a trapper was it was to start the race by opening the traps to start the race ).

Barton, Whippet racing is usually in a straight line. Also I think the concrete road you are on about( The Lonnen,or could be Lonning) starts in the 'dip' in the road and runs all the way to Netherton past firstly 'Nelsons' farm then past 'Rutherfords' farm.

There was a tip near Netherton many years ago, not sure exactly where though. Later on there was a landfill sited where the pit ponds were, but this was in the late 80's early 90's.

the concrete road used to lead to the brickworks that was a few 100 yards from the main road.

whippet racing was allways run in a straight line .the imatation hare was pulled along the track on a rope that was wound up by using a bycycle turned upside down that didnt have a tyer on.

That's right it was the brick works not the pit ponds! Got mixed up there, it's because we used to go there for tadpoles and newts. Wonder how they got planning permission for a land fill with the newts being there?

the road was concrete and remained for years after the colliery was pulled down, part of the road it was still open in about1977/8 as my dad took me there the practice driving.

you could travel from the nedderton side right through to the choppington side for a while, then when the colliery was open casted for the howard seam the road was closed to the public.

Yep. My first attempts at driving were along that road too.

Back in 1978 me & my old Escort trundled along that road at a mean 20mph.

On one occasion I stalled it just before rejoining the Choppington road.

Escorts were renowned for the sticking bendix in their starter motors & I couldn`t restart it.

So there I was, with the bonnet up, giving said bendix a whack with a chopping axe head , just as a police car came by the junction, being driven by a very diligent officer, who must have thought I was trying to hot wire it, cos he screetched to a halt!

Thankfully he knew of certain Fords failings too & believed my story.

The wippet racing was down the lonnen just past the s bend and on the right handside

 The houses on howard row and clifton row were knocked down when people left to new houses in west lea and ridge farm estate behind netherton club the new one  cheers jim lofthouse

I can remember the concrete road being laid bybedlington council in approx 1947/493

This is only a picture of what was called the new houses the original rows were yard row,howard row and clifton row all up towards howard pit the new houses went from the institute to the old francis pit near the, conctete road to choppington

@Canny lass - I don't have a note of where the old 'sepia' aerial photo originated from but in a quick search on this site I found this topic where @tomtom posted a colour aerial photo of the colliery houses.

I will have a bit Google search, and dig into sites, see what I can find.
