panem et circenses

...identifies the only remaining cares of a new Roman populace which cares not for its historical birthright of political involvement. Here Juvenal displays his contempt for the declining heroism of his contemporary Romans.   Roman politicians devised a plan in 140 B.C. to win the votes of these new citizens: giving out cheap food and entertainment, "bread and circuses", would be the most effective way to rise to power.

Presumably Boris has done it already?  :D

Apparently not, but I'd not have lost a sure bet on Sarah Palin or Alex Salmond:

If I could, I would sir. Long before the 'hot-pipe' was at Cambois we spent loads of time in that cold water. I can remember those cold waves going over my head  - Family and neighbour's Cambois beach - 1954-55 :-  post-3031-0-42023100-1409341712_thumb.jp

Eggy does the hot pipe still exist with the power station gone thought that would of disappeared ??.

Tony - I just remember there was a pipe discharging hot water, can't really remember if there were two pipes, or just the one that I believe is still there and comes from the pit site. These are the Google satellite views from 2009;-

I was wondering where Cher was for a few seconds - until, it came to me that this must be the tolerant face of Islam.  The one we must all embrace in the name of PC-loony-left multiculturalism!  Was that Rotherham?

Not for me!  Too much ice cold water shrivels the whatits just as Eggy will remember from Cambois.

As lads we had some canny fishing off the power station hot pipe.

I volunteer to have a bucket of gin and tonic with ice poured down...er...over me!!! :dribble:

Keith, this and the post about not being able to swim are just about my intended responses to this subject.

As an aside, I find it interesting how these things spread thanks only (in the first instance) to the power of social media networking. However, without looking it up, how many of you can tell me what it's all about? And for those that do, how many of you had to actually look it up in the first place? For anyone who didn't know, it would seem to be about chucking cold water over each other.

Mercuryg when you do the ice bucket challenge your supposed to give £5 to the motor neuron disease charity, when you do the challenge you can nominate somebody else then it goes on,it's about having a LAUGH & contributing to a good cause....

I read a statement of their accounts that said the amount actually going to research has gone up from 7.5% to 10% the rest goes to administration and advertising etc.

I only donate to "local funds†for heart and cancer fundraising.

Got it wrong sclerosis

Vic fair comment any charity is good but it is up to individual where he or she donates I'm just saying it's just a bit of fun it's not forced

I think you missed my point. I know of a number of people who have done this, without actually understanding the bit about donation, and what you are donating to.

For the record, I haven't done it, and will not be donating, not because I'm a miserable old git, but because I already contribute to a chosen charity on a regular basis. I can't afford to join in with every charity chain letter that comes along. For those who have done it, good for you, and so on.

I thought that if you didn't want to get a soaking then you coughed-up the dosh ... a bit like a fine.

Surely the local answer should be 'haddaway and sh--e '

Why oh why are people doing this challenge !

Maybe in a hot country!
