May 4, 201511 yr I was born and bred in Bedlington and still have family in the town. I was recently asked to write a letter to my 5-year-old granddaughter for a school project, describing my life as a young girl. I enclosed pictures of the old Whitley Memorial school and Humford Baths - a real walk down memory lane.
May 4, 201511 yr Welcome to the forum Millbank. Your walk down memory lane will certainly continue here. Enjoy it!
May 11, 201511 yr Author Welcome. Did your grand daughter understand cold swimming baths!I think the things that most intrigued her were the milk deliveries by horse and cart and the fact that I walked to school on my own. Her local swimming pool has an outside area - but it's heated!
May 12, 201511 yr You should come here Maggie. Swimming baths are closed during the summer months - apart from warm water sessions for arthritics and the likes. Lakes and rivers are what it's all about!
May 12, 201511 yr Sounds good.Although I do remember fingers going white and getting a little cold.Second thoughts where is that hot water bottle!
May 21, 201511 yr Welcome Millbank! My old school-friend who I sat next to, right through the Village Infants ,Whitley Memorial, and Westridge schools, was a lad who lived at Millbank, right on the brow of the hill-top of the road down to Cambo Avenue...or whatever!!Alan Wilkinson, and he is on this forum, along with his next-door neighbour,Ronnie Leyland,in the Whitley School football team colours, alang with Matty Hall. You will find them if you do a bit of scrolling around.I knew most folks down there, and Beattie road as well,we all went to school together. You should have tried climbing out of Humford Baths, with a soaking wet hand-knitted wool cosser on....without being embarrassed....need I say more?!!
