  3. Bill and his wife Blanche go to the Yorkshire Show every year, And every year Bill would say, " Blanche, I'd like to ride in that there 'elicopter " Blanche always replied, " I know Bill, but that 'elicopter ride is twenty quid, And twenty quid is twenty quid! " One year Bill and Blanche went to the fair, and Bill said, " Blanche, I'm 75 years owd. If I don't ride that there 'elicopter, I might never get another chance " To this, Blanche replied, " Bill that 'elicopter ride is twenty quid, and twenty quid is twenty quid " The pilot overheard the couple and said, " I'll make you a deal. I'll take the both of you for a ride. If you can stay quiet for the entire ride and don't say a word I won't charge you a penny! But if you say one word it's twenty quid. " Bill and Blanche agreed and up they went. The pilot did all kinds of fancy manoeuvers, but not a word was heard. He did his daredevil tricks over and over again, But still not a word... When they landed, the pilot turned to Bill and said, " By golly, I did everything I could to get you to yell out, but you didn't.. I'm impressed! " Bill replied, " Well, to tell yer t'truth I nearly said summat when Blanche fell aht, But, tha' knows, twenty quid is twenty quid! "

  8. I think that too dismissive GGG, national interest is in plain sight of anyone with even a smidgen of common sense. Selling off national infrastructure to the highest bidder is not a sensible or cost productive option, it was a political option! I do agree nationalised industries always tended to be run for the benefit of the laziest workers and also incompetent management. That should have been tackled within the confines of the industries without recourse to privatisations………… and probably would these days. Nationalised industries should have been exemplars of good practice both in production and also in things like training and security of tenure. Fact was they weren't and in a competitive environment we either had to outrageously subsidise them while instituting deep cultural change or get rid of them out of the public purse. The latter option was chosen politically. I can't argue the point, do as I say not as I do because 'we' have done exactly what you say overseas and exploited every possible situation. Doesn't make it right though! At the end of the day the financial sector, as a mainstay of the private sector, has demonstrated for all to see what happens with rampant self-regulatory congenital capitalism, eventually after the greed and graft has been profligate and self-destructive it relies on the public sector as a backstop!
  9. Mistakes have also been made here it seems.....................that turns the whole of the IMF bailouts into what they are......worthless in any real sense of the word! http://globaleconomicanalysis.blogspot.co.uk/2012/10/imf-admits-it-prescribed-wrong-medicine.html

  12. Couldn't agree more Brian and Vic and its our generation who have allowed it to happen. Its akin to the financial crisis, at some point the correction has to come and the longer its left the harder that correction will have to be. I am not quite sure where we got this laissez-faire attitude from especially as we were so enthusiastic in our youth? We have bent the knee to every minority who said they were aggrieved, we have compromised our culture to accept others and we have accepted a political class who would best be described as weak, for fear of being moderated! This is not the revolution in society I went on demos in my youth to bring about!
  13. I think there are some things of far more worth to a country than just in monetary terms. The first responsibility of the politocrats is to secure the safety of the people and selling off vital and crucial bits of this country's infrastructure always struck me as dangerous, to say the least. In fact when you are dealing with super rich terrorists and foreign powers the easiest way they can exercise control would be to buy up your privatised infrastructure. In much the same aways the Frogs have done with water and electricity. We have sold the soul of this country to the Devil for a shiny bright penny………. Just waiting for GGG's reply now…………..

  21. CL, As far as I remember it, measures were brought in as a knee reaction last time we had a Conservative Government and the Blair Government carried the polices on and increased the severity of potential retribution as a vote winner. Its the worst kind of legislation, its being played and passed aorund as a political football rather than strict adherence to the facts.
