  1. I think it was where the entrance to Mesdowdale now is! Seem to remember a pathway where the road runs It was good for blackberry picking. Those Ghosts again the music has just cut into Mark Knoppler and leaving Northumberland. 'For some damned town that's God forsaken'
  2. The sermons of this vicar were long. Bob Charlton wrote I pray Mr Vicar. Do try to be quicker In teaching us miserable sinners Our bellies are croaking, and its truly provoking To be kept so long from our dinners! Wonder if it worked!
  3. The Tombstone appears to say:- A. D. 1801 Steady the Path ordain'd by nature's God And free from human vices, Wheatley trod Yet hop'd no future life- his all he liv'd The turf he grazed his parting breath received And now protect his bones:disturb them not But let one faithful horse respected rot. Maybe the bones are now under someone's house.
  4. Henry Coates vicar at St Cuthbert's from 1788 it seems erected the tombstone to his horse Wheatley. Weddell who was said to be the Plessey Poet wrote a poem accusing him of having shot the horse to save it's keep. Corn and hay was expensive, at the time it seems. Life in Bedlington has never been dull. Sorry cannot send the picture because I am in exile from home and wi-fi. How would we survive without our Internet access! I feel a new topic coming on!
  5. Runrig and Hearts of Olden Glory. A place where old hearts grow young.
  6. Then there was a vicar who buried his horse in part of the Graveyard. Also the poet who asked the Vicar to be quicker because he was keeping folks from there dinners. Both items are history. Which is important?
  7. Talking of Morpeth and how about the Mordue Brewary. Beers named Radgie Gadgie and Workie Ticket. Good beer and brilliant names
  8. Congratulations on the small print Vic. We have not got to that stage yet. Just the twelve grand kids for us. We love it, they make our life so special. Even if they shred the old net curtains. They were my mothers and needed to go.
  9. Symptoms I have been called worse! My mother always insisted on Margaret, hence I answer to most things. The biggest compliment was my mother saying ' mind Margaret you have always been awkward' Maybe I should not have taken it as a compliment. I think it is essential to bring kids and now grand kids up to have a mind of there own. You feel then that they can say no to drugs and injustice. There is also that old one about shy bairns getting nowt. However the disadvantage is they argue with me. Would not want it any other way. We get the kids we deserve!
  10. I guess controversy sells newspapers but would someone be put off expressing an opinion because it could be shot down in flames. People can take offense in the work place at minor items, it seems. I do not see many females contributing to the debates. I am not being controversial, it seems a good topic within this topic to debate. I was in the debating society at Westridge, maybe that is to blame. If blame has to be apportioned.
  11. What's your fettle, or abuse in the region of I will fettle him/ her. We do use some classic language, very expressive. Is it just used in Northumberland.
  12. On Malcolm's original post if you click on ' Bedlingtin it's a canny town', it says who wrote and helped with the site and project in 1986. A few of the names you will recognize. I wonder if the book fair was school organized.
  13. Could people be put off joining the site because of the language we use! I am not ruling myself out.
  14. In Newcastle you can now buy a sign saying:- Née Smerkin Bought it for a friend, but I do not think she will receive it.
  15. The ghostly voices could also be recognized through the pictures and all on this site. We all come back to one thing, our love of life in Bedlington. Regardless of where we live now.
  16. How about 'Hacky Lazy' Or The ultimate embarrassing question growing up ' are you courting yet' As if you would tell them if you were!
  17. When answering questions about my family. I asked how the other person was, she simply said I am still walking. I believe another answer is I am still breathing. Brilliant!
  18. Even if we do not know the people on the pictures, we can see resemblance to those we know. Did anyone see Meet the Izzards. Basically examining our Genes through DNA. Wonder what tests in our area would find. Romans Vikings and more.
  19. That video needs a topic on it's own. Barter Books is just plain brilliant and is on the map for any visitor to the area. Even heard people on Radio 4 singing its praises. The North East is now so popular. We all know why!
  20. Clannad are very good. My favourite is 'We all think well of a bridge'. They did not do it last night. Brian Kennedy is worth a listen 'The Great War of Words' was out in the early nineties. The Ghostly Voice was my Gran's sister. Everyone on the site is drawn back to Bedlington and the North East. We all have our reasons the place is second to none. On Katherine Tickell's Northumbrian Voices her mother describes her early life and landscape by saying she feels ' This is my land' I know how she feels.
  21. The book reprinted by Rev Osgathorp in 1949,gives slightly more information to later editions. The books are of Bedlington Church by the Rev A Campbell Fraser, MA Sketches by Mrs A E MacLeod I grew up in the knowledge that the monks fled from Lindisfarne and the Vikings first and then again from the Normans. The date Saturday the 12th Dec 1069 is mentioned. I am attempting to reproduce the page but it is only a hand held.
  22. Dinah Iredale who used to live in Bedlington, has written a book on this subject. She gave a talk last month at the Lit and Phil. It is worth checking out. The picture of the female farm workers that has just been posted may or may not be relevant.
  23. Keep Calm and Carry On! This is the poster they found, now someone is trying to copyright the thing. Article in the Journal in January. Do not know what happened. I hope Barter Books won, the shop is great, I have to be dragged out.
  24. The book provides one persons view about our times and our town. Whilst maybe we do not see things in quite that way it is interesting to read. A gritty and rather graphic account of life in a Northern town. We can become complacent and we all have subjective views on the past. Good and bad, we decide for ourselves what we remember. My memories are not like those of Paul Mann but I have not committed time and energy into writing a book. I think in Bedlington we are a long way from a 'Shameless Society' I enjoyed reading the book.
  25. A local lass made a speech at Morpeth. Nedderton I believe, called Caisley. My reason for introducing the topic was to raise the profile of Bedlington and try to find a local connection.
