  1. Thank you for that sir, looks like a bleak year for some.

Even thought the WP8 allows for larger screen devices to be connected I will be carrying on as normal with my Desktop PC, with 19" screen, for some time.

How will I manage in capture the beauty of the countryside without 40 megapixels? Just continue using my eyes + Specsavers lens and live in my world. As Joan Jett & The Blackhearts would sing - Oh, woe is me I don't got no money All I got's a name The future's lookin' hazy But who can I blame!

Please never allow old codgers, like me, to bring you down to their level. Keep looking, moving and progressing ever forward. Even though we are blind to the benefits that will evolve from it don't ever give up.

  2. Norma Squires & her mam posted another photo of Dene House, from the Hairpin bend side of the river and also asked the question - 'Whats that small building, on the right, next to the bridge wall'. Does anyone know if this is The Toll House that Reedy listed in the original post?

    attachicon.gifToll House.jpg

What I should have said was - 'Is this the Toll Booth that belonged to the Toll House?'

  4. The Grapes always had one in the 60s & 70s - source of income for some - ex miner from Dr Pit, hurt in detonator blast - income was UB + selling veg from multiple gardens + bookies running (including half's from punters). So it's Online bookies accounts that have crippled the benefits system and forced entrepreneurs to claim extra. I blame Thatcher.

  5. Subject:  Glasgow characters

Some nicknames that have been given to Glasgow characters by their friends and workmates:

"Two Soups" his real name is Campbell Baxter.

"The Colostomy" - the girlfriend of a married man (i.e. the wee bag on the side).

"The Boomerang Kid" - whenever anyone at work asks a question, he always replies: ' I'll get back to you on that. '

"The Parachute" - lets everyone down at the last minute.

"Vaseline" - his real name is Willie Burns.

"Rembrandt" - loves saying to colleagues: ' Let me put you in the picture...'

"Bo Derek" - a chap called Derek with terrible body odour.

"The Genie" - magically appears whenever anyone opens a bottle.

"Dulux" - his pals reckon he's only got one coat.

"Soapy" - washes his hands of any problems that crop up..

"The Yeti" - always on the sick. Many unconfirmed sightings of this guy,

but nobody can prove he actually exists.

"The Gas Man" - he's serviced loads of old boilers.

"The Hostage" - when anyone asks for help he always replies: 'Sorry, my hands are tied.'

"The Olympic Flame" - he never goes out!

  6. On a Xmas theme watch the 'Geordie Penguin'

Spoof on the John Lewis ad.

My guess it will be banned soon.

Thanks Maggie, that made me laugh -  passed that link on to those who will be able to understand it! "Geordie John Lewis Christmas Advert 2014 Parody #GeordieThePenguin - YouTube"

  7. I belive there is a covenant on it but as we have seen with Tesco and the car park, covenants are there to be broken! The Tesco Car Park had a convenant bequething the use to the town's people of Bedlington for things like free parking (180 places) and a weekly market (if so desired). Tesco squashed that and changed it to their timed parking with penalties after so long.

I think the 20 aches has a covenant on it, but I heard also is not suitable building land as it is all sand under it.

    Cheers

  8. I am taking the easy way out rather than searching through loads of NCC documents. A question was asked, on the sixtownships site, about the building on the 20 acres site ie.

".......I have been told there is a covenant on the land to prevent building work on the land?"

    Does anyone know the answer?

On the sixtownships site , many theories, examples below, but nothing concrete or any links to any info:-

Pam Farquhar - William Leech gave the land to the people of Bedlington on condition it would never be built on

Michael Eastlake - I heard that William Leach had bequeathed the area for the children of bedlington to play, that said I also think the land is unstable to build upon and now has massive drainage works towards the millfield end. If building work was possible think a prime spot like that would have been snapped up.

Geoff Glass - Someone have this land as a gift to The citizens of Bedlington Town but only to be used for recreational purposes only

I think that is why the Picnic was held there As it's considered Free Land and no building is allowed.

  9. Happy for the info to go onto websites but I've held back on putting any new pictures on here as I was alerted that some personal pictures had been claimed by others who then posted them elsewhere and possibly made a profit from them.

It's a shame because it stops people adding to their own collections. Dad has hundreds of Bedlington pictures but has never tried to profit from them. We're happy to help people and have sent photos by personal message or email rather than posting them.

This is a great website but possibly gets misused sometimes. Love the history hollow and Dad enjoys trying to identify people and places. Good job by the site administrators thank you.

Thanks Reedy - I will email the info to the lady who posted :-

  10. Windows bases systems.

Never come across CinemaP-12C before but if I did I would probably go back to a posting I raised -  'Adware Or Spyware On Windows Systems – Premieropinionin' in this Forum. I did many test on various products and found that 'malwarebytes' as recommended by threegee was the only free download software that identified PUPs = Potentially Unwanted Program.

     https://www.malwarebytes.org/

A site I have used before - loads & loads of problems/solutions/step by step guides etc. is http://deletemalware.blogspot.co.uk/ - specifically for Cinemap-12C the link is

    Good luck.

  11. Continuing on from the lists of families I posted on the 'Puddlers Raa' topic in History Hollow, here is a list of the families who lived in the streets on the Bebside part of the 'Furnace' area during the period 1940 - 1952. Hopefully they'll help with someones research.

I've also posted 3 pictures which show quite a few buildings and streets (couldn't tell you the date though). The first 2 make a good panorama if you put them side by side.

Reedy - Ok if I copy this info, and photo, into a posting on the sixtownships History Group site? There are a few asking about Dene house and one ex resident, born there 1945 her mother born there 1920, so they should find it interesting. The posting is at https://www.facebook.com/groups/1473242359580083/permalink/1556278291276489/ and the posting header, by John Dawson, is :- " Dene House, Bedlington undated

Situated where the car park is today."

  12. I think what Symptoms is referring to is BT Openzone.

There is a small portion of your bandwidth allocated to the Openzone so that other BT customers can use your bandwidth if they are in your vicinity. This is also an opt-out solution so is turned on by default.

I wouldn't imagine that these would appear in your logs as it is technically not your WiFi network.

I have no technical explanation for the above as I have not seen the GUI for the Homehub 5 but in the grand scheme of things it could be BT reporting usage statistics amongst other things.

Yeh Brett, Openzone ... that's the beast.

Thank you gentlemen - I will check out 'Openzone' - at the moment, since registering complaint over recorded usage, my download activity is averaging out at 0.3 GB per day (0.75GB per day before whinge attracting additional charges) and therefore staying within my 20GB monthly allowance.

  13. Researchers for the Ministry of Transport found over 200 dead crows near Greater Manchester recently, and there was concern that they may have died from Avian Flu.

A Bird Pathologist examined the remains of all the crows, and, to everyone's relief, confirmed the problem was definitely NOT Avian Flu. The cause of death appeared to be vehicular impacts. However, during the detailed analysis it was noted that varying colours of paints appeared on the bird's beaks and claws.

By analysing these paint residues it was determined that 98% of the crows had been killed by impact with lorries, while only 2% were killed by an impact with a car.

Ministry of Transport then hired an Ornithological Behaviourist to determine if there was a cause for the disproportionate percentages of truck kills versus car kills. The Ornithological Behaviourist very quickly concluded the cause: ...... "When crows eat road kill, they always have a look-out crow in a nearby tree to warn of impending danger. They discovered that while all the lookout crows could shout "Cah", not a single one could shout "Lorry."

  14. Since registering my concerns with BT my usage figures, as monitored by BT, have reduced, from an average of 1GB per day to an average of approx. 0.5GB per day. Prior to the upgrade to Hub5 the average was 0.3GB per day. So, Maggie, at the moment I will not be giving them additional monthly payments to go 'unlimited'. When I become so sick and infirm that I can't move out of my 'Desktop chair' I will upgrade to unlimited. Until then I will stay in the dark-ages and watch TV on a TV; listen to music on a CD player (did get rid of the stereogram!); talk to people on a phone and put photographs in albums with electronic copies on the PC and backed up to external hard drive x 2 leaving the 'clouds' to drift around the world.

    Symptoms

    Posted 01 October 2014 - 04:00 PM

Doesn't the BT Hub BY DEFAULT allow all the neighbours (within range) and those walking past in the street to piggyback onto it, thus hoovering-up your resources.  Perhaps you might want to consider being anti-social and disable this 'open' option.

Symptoms – no trace in the BT logs of any unknown addresses piggy backing on my Hub. The default settings will stay as they are, for now, as the grandchildren sometimes use the Hub address for their kit.

Discussing the registered increase of downloads with the BT staff there is no way they can check the logs to try and identify what caused my usage to more than treble in the first few weeks the Hub 5 was installed.  Only a special group (can't remember the name for them) within BT can check individual users logs, privacy laws etc.  The staff on the front-line support just have to fend off, with some basic knowledge, customers ringing up check their accounts. So if anyone wants logs to be checked then you would have to get noticed by regular porn and paedophile activities and then the special group can ignore your human rights.

Foxy - I keep quiet about the Mega Bit on the side. There I've downloaded.
