  1. @Bandsman1966 - names added to the photo. had a look at the names on the other early 1900's photos and I matched 3 names  that were on the 1922 photo that has the RBT DEUCHAR CUP band =  J. MUTTON - JOE DOBSON & PETER CHRISTIE.

Had a look through the other Netherton albums to see if I could see any building to the one behind the wall the band are in front of. There is one old photo of Fails Farm in the album  Netherton/Nedderton old photos 2 but it's not very clear and I couldn't say it was the same building where this band photo was taken.

Fails Farm that was posted by James Lee Aynsley's on Facebook - Bygone Bedlinngton with the caption :- "Heading from the Road Ends past MrFails Farm buildings towards Netherton Colliery in the distance is the last house Standing it was on Third Street."

Ah, now, if you compare the names from the "earlier" pic I see the 2 young lads #'s 26/7  named as Hutton & Clark, on this pic #2 and #9 a few years older.....we're (mostly you) are starting to pin this timeframe down.

I started looking at that this afternoon. I copied your list of names from 1922, 29 & 32 to see what I could match up.

I would imagine that any miner, that was a musician, was  loyal to the pit he worked at and although I couldn't prove it I would be guessing that in the 20's & 30's when all the Bedlingtonshire pits were in production the miners wouldn't have had to travel to a pit outside the area they lived.

I can also image that most bands had many extra members spread over the 3 shifts and it it would be costly for anyone to miss a normal, or weekend, shift so it would be unusual for the same people to be competing in every competition :-

  3. bluebarby dug out an old newspaper article and commented:- This is the write up out of a paper, probably the Blyth News, about the last time Netherton banner would be at the picnic.

  4. @Bandsman1966 - added the list of names from the previous image posted. The back & front rows easy but the sequence of the names, middle two rows, could be out of step.

Would you like the name 'North Seaton' added to the photo?

I had a check on the Brass bands results web site and there is only one competition listed for 1929 with Northseaton Workmen & Netherton Colliery taking part.

  5. Bandsman - I know the words 'Sept 1950 New Uniforms Cresswell Disaster' is written on your info but I have not included it on the photos I have added the names to.

I did a bit of research and the Creswell Colliery Mining disaster, Derbyshire was on the 26th. September 1950 -  a fire broke out and 80 men were killed. The fire was started at No. 2 transfer point, when a conveyor belt jammed. The belt rollers probably continued to rotate and friction on the conveyor belting produced enough heat to propagate the fire. Flames swept through the 12' by 10' roadway trapping the men behind a "wall of flame".26th September 1950.

I 'Googled' to see to see if there was any info online about any tributes by colliery bands following the disaster but didn't find anything.

I couldn't make out the faded writing that appears to be the name of the cup the band are dispalying so couldn't find anything on that.

The only Brass Band competition I could find for Sept 1950 was The British Open but that was on the 2nd September 1950 and Netherton were not listed as having taken part in the competition. The Creswell Colliery Band were in that competition.

Also in Historic Bedlington is an Album - 'Nedderton/Netherton old photos' by Carole and this photo is in it but with the info :-' This photo was taken in the garden of Howard House in the 1930s. The Colliery Manager, Mr Anthony Scott is seated behind and slightly to the right of the trophy.' Based on the names you have given, with your photo, and having seen the people in other photos 1950 would appear to be the right date.

As for the way the names have been set out it is difficult to match them into the 5 rows so I have done two photos – one with numbers and an attempt to associate all the names to a number and one with no numbers and just 5 rows of names.

  6. This old image posted on a Facebook group and saved by one of the members but that member can't remember which group they saved it from. Suspect it will be from one of Evan Martin's many books on Bedlingtonshire - the Railway Tavern, proprietor G E O CRAIGS, with ELLIOT'S newsagents on the left of the building.

  7. The young lad, bottom left corner as you look at the photo, has been bugging me as I am sure I have seen him before. Took a while but then it clicked - Bedlington Grammar School photo posted on Facebook group Bygone Bedlington and part of the comment was :- '.......... and Gordon was the talented young upstart from the fourth year.......'
