  1. Cheers Vic & Doreen - photo updated. No 30 is the late Joan Hartill.

Foxy - would you say thank you to Jim from Joan Hartill's sister, Sylvia, who now has a copy of the photo.

  2. Now for the throwing the spanner in the works bit Vic!

Jim Hardy has now posted his list of names that he has sellotaped on the back of the original photo. Naturally jumping back a mere 66 years there are bound to be mix ups with some of the names and there are a few differences to what HPW and your good wife recalled. It's times like these when technology can be thrown out the window. We need a large table, print outs and all people concerned debating, and naturally some alcohol to fuel the debate.

I have update the names and will add the revised edition + Jim's photo of the names to this comment.

When Jim posted this photo he part of his comment was - 'Whitley Memorial junior 1950'. When I replied and said thank you for posting the original I added, diplomatically, - 'this is the Village School, isn't it?' He replied with the a one line comment -  'Whitley memorial junior 1950'. So even tho it says on the board within the photo 'BEDLINGTON VILLAGE INFANTS 1950 CLASS 2' Jim says different. I'm sticking with HPW and you.

I'm still using my Desktop PC Vic, it's the only bit of hardware I have. Mine was purchased a mere 8 years ago, and the 19" screen + large keyboard is wonderful. Just got to hope they see me out!

Now the pics - updates to Nos 9,10,11,12,16,19,21,24,25,27,41 & 42 - some just spelling, others a different name  :-

  3. Vic - unfortunately - a photo of the original photo is what has been uploaded. I have added it here, without any numbers & names so you can get a 'clean' copy if you want one. If you want me to add the numbers & names to this one just say so and I will do it.

It would be nice if Jim could share the original photo. It might help identification.

Working on it Vic, but no response yet. Unfortunately most people these days take photos of photos to upload and the resulting image not always in focus. I still have an old Desktop PC with scanner (D11" x H7" x W17") connected. No doubt when I go it will go with me.

HPW & Vic(Doreen) - one name that is not mentioned is Thomas (Tucker) Holmes. His daughter, Christine Holmes, has been attempting to find an old school photo of him and she did post on this site asking about him. HPW replied saying that he and Tommy had gone to the same schools throughout their school life. Is Tommy in this photo?

and on the Bygone Bedlington site a comment from Jim Hardy -  Hi Alan.i have an original photo, which I put in the NEWS POST LEADER, on Feb 19. 1998.. I think No 42 ,is George Wilson.? And No 41 is Jimmy brown ?? I think he is the millfield ..??brown

  6. The response I got from one member on the Bedlington Remembered site when I posted the photo with 'UPPER REMOVE........' on was :- 'This was not upper remove as there are 4 different years on the photo! 1 Yvonne Brown, 2 Ann Oakley, 3 George Brewis 9 Christine Sutcliffe 11 George Mitcheson 12 ????Patterson (head girl 1959) 17 Linda Matthews'

When I asked about the 'REMOVE' system the reply I got was :- 'Alan,I have already explained the system on other sites that you are involved with, I am not going to do it again.' So that was me told.

When Allana came back with the year 1958 the reply from the member was :'and your mother was spot on, the penny has finally dropped. It was navy blue with the letters in gold. I still have that badge and hated it. Me and your mother were in the same class from infants at Nethertons, Nedderton junior, Guide Post (what a hell hole that was! I hated the place) then Westridge then we left school, never saw her again after that as I moved a foreign place called Newbiggin. Your mam lived up Clifton Row and I lived in Plessey Street. Sheesh, that is 55 years ago!'

So from the above replies you will note that the informant is Allo Allo's Michelle Dubois!

  8. Posted the photo, with names, on the sixtownships Facebook site and Colin Sim commented :- 'I don't think nine is Tommy Tyler he went to the council school and also 12 I don't think that's Brian Richmond he was also older than the others in the photo'.

  9. Barrington County primary School, replacing the village school, was built in 1913, away from the colliery, close to Rotledge's Buildings.

Information from Evan Martin's The Archive Photographs series - Bedlingtonshire :- "When the new school was opened in 1913, no one was more pleased than headmaster Ben Berkley............... Berkley had taken up the job in Barrington in 1878 and was 21 years old and stayed 44 years. He lived in the village school house until 1905 when he and his family moved to Willow Bridge, where he died in 1932.

The photograph, added to the map, is from Evan Martin's book
