  1. This photo was posted on Facebook sixtownships site but with no info or the source of the photo. Had a quick Google search but only info on the farm returned and nothing to match the images of the buildings in the photo. The old ordnance survey maps show a Plessey Hall Farm and a Plessey Mill with the Plessey Mill as '(Dis)', that I would take as disused, on the  map published in 1954. Proves nothing but filled in half an hour of me time.

  2. Lawrence Pattison updated the Facebook post on Bygone Bedlington :-'The Wheatsheaf was my Grandas pub until he got TB [my Mams Dad] .The pub was closed, 1938 or 39, after he died and was then converted into flats .My Grandma got a sweet shop at Bebside opposite the school just past the Asda roundabout.'

No update on the 1950's for the date the pub was demolished.

  3. Posted on Bygone Bedlington Facebook site by John Krzyzanowski :- 'May 31 1973. A bit of real Bedlington history. The announcement of the closure of the last Bedlington pit, Netherton colliery. It had been open since 1836 and at the time employed 558 men. End of an era.'

Would that be Norah Hopper who married Vic Calvert and they became steward and stewardess of the Market Place Club? Also had a brother, Tommy Hopper, who was, I think, Secretary on the Committee.

Dad reckons number 4 is his cousin who was called Norah Hopper.

Reedy - I've sent a message to JK and updated him on Norah Hopper.

Webtrecker - didn't know the Market Place Club stewardess but did know Tommy. I know he was Concert Chairman at the Market Place club for a few years and I first met him on the Civil Service site at Longbenton in the early 70s. This photo, (posted by John Dawson on sixtownships) of committee members was posted on Facebook saying they were all members of the Guidepost social club - don't know if Tommy was also on their committee or just visiting.
