As I lived and grew up (1948 to 1969) behind The Oval, Coquetdale Place, during my youth I don't have many memories of the Mechanics team as we nearly always went to watch the football at the Bedlington Station Welfare park. What has stuck in my mind (but the memory is often clouded) is on the rare occasions I did go to watch the Mechanics, in the early 1960's, was as you turned the corner where the butchers shop was at the end of Beech Grove the entrance to the Mechanics ground was just a few paces along from the butchers. I can only remember one of the lads that played fro the Mechanics and that was Vince Allison, fullback?, who lived in Melrose Avenue at The Bank Top.

@Tom Lowes - your list of names added to your photo. I started BGS in 1960 but there is one name I recognise and that is Joe Stuart. There was a Joe Stuart lived in Pioneer Terrace, Bedlington Station and that one used to work at the unemployment  office that was on the top floor of the old co-op building (still there) on Station Street. Do you know if that would that be the same Joe Stuart that's in your photo?

This gathering was more likely to have been for those officers based in the wider 'local area' attending a centralised training session at the Grammar School.  Most of the villages/towns in the area of south Northumberland (and Nationwide) would have had Home Guard troupes under the command of an officer so I reckon they could be from Morpeth, Ashington, Blyth, and assorted villages.

I'm with you I have been checking another photo - West Sleekburn Home Guard, also 1943 - there are 71 in the Sleekburn phot but only 9 named.

@Canny lass - I have no info. There are a lot of officers for a small town. I wonder how many Private's - Lance Corporal's & Corporal's there were?

I posted the photo on the Bygone Bedlington Facebook group and Heather Dougals's husband came up with a clearer version - his grandad is No 42 in the second photo where I have added numbers and made the names easier to read.
