  1. they introduced this whilst I was in sixth form (Not at Bennies) and it was a way of the teachers keeping an eye on the behaviour as people were shaking the vending machines to get free food and damaging property. Im sure that if there were enough pupils who refused to be filmed then they would have no choice but to take it down. It's not a public place so they shouldn't be allowed to film without permission.

  2. Alternatively, destroy the causeway and only let people cross via raft when the tide is in. And they have to pull themselves along by rope on said raft. Residents would probably appreciate the peace and quiet of chopper blades and engines.

Have some raising bollards that are raised when the water level reaches a certain height on the causeway. Would have the same effect as barriers but would be hidden when not in use.

  3. Now after reading that it all sounds so farcicle because it isn't to be expected. I hope that alot of that is true and that others take a leaf out his book instead of milking everything they can because they are given certain responsibilites.

Like Ian Slavery opening the baby unit at Wansbeck last week. Really?! Could they have not have got someone with some worth in the area?

  4. Apologies Keith, I missed a '0' from that total. This is the amount that the local news led us to believe sometime last week. My maths is normally bad but not that bad :glare:

Some people just don't care about the consequences as there are generally no repurcussions of their actions. I know the lads here that fly the Sea King would beg to differ. Although I'm sure they would just want to do their mandatory flying to keep themselves current and not have to be called out....needs must and all that though.

Whatever they decide to go with I am sure they will have meeting upon meeting about it and they will be no further forward with people still getting stuck. The only way to stop people doing it is to have some sort of EMP when the tide is coming in to disable the engine. Least that would work.....

  5. £4200 + for the Sea King to rescue stranded motorists!! How would anyone be able to foot the bill for running one of those.

I agree that it is total lack of consideration when trying to beat the tide but they couldn't foot the full bill for recovery as it will be 5 years plus wages for most people.

Barriers will look an eye sore but one thing is certain is that nothing will change to drastically as the only thing that is certain is human stupidity.

    (May have mis-quoted that)

  6. Interesting report just come out which says football fans spend 38% more than any other tourists. So for no real investment if we had the world cup instead of the Olympics we would have attracted the biggest leisure spenders.

Well would that not be dependant on what Qatar paid so we had to outbid them?

  7. I agree the station looks a bit of a state, we stopped there recently on a part of our 200 mile coast & castles charity bike ride as its on the official sustrains route, we parked our support vehicle and cyclists behind the medical centre which resembled a scene from beirut with properties smashed to bits and litter thrown all over the place (including the med centre roof)!. hopefully the train lines will get re-opened and bring some much needed investment into the area along with shares of the "County" spoils that have recently been poured into Blyth, Morpeth etc. The Sustrans Coast & Castles route is a huge draw of people from outside the area as it is a popular route and regularly cycled by several groups and the station is one of about five locations that needs regeneration. However I would like to add that the butty shop coped with 15 of us extremely well and served up some cracking sarnies!

I can vouch for the butty shop, was there today and the belly buster was just what I needed after getting absolutely soaked.

  8. There you go Brettly, you happened to be brave to go thru The Station that says it all. What is going on when The Station is thought of like that. Take heed Councillors we are not amused.

I was actually joking doglover, I have worked in the area and drive through less frequently as it's quicker for me going along to guidepost. From personal experience the area doesn't have a bad reputation and you certainly do not have to be brave to go through the station. Some sort of recreational activities to stop the young'uns hanging around at the brick bus stop across from Boots would be an advantage.

  9. Was watching this on the news last night and it is absolutely beyond belief what is going on down in the capital. Be interesting to see how Cameron sorts this one out as they are obviously refraining from introducing the national guard to the scene.

  10. I agree with your post keith and especially..........

It does not have to cost a fortune to cosmetically clean the place up and instill a sense of pride of their environment into the People who live and work in Bedlington Stn, and, for that matter, the Top End/Market Place.

Sticking my neck out a bit and doing a bit of Devil's advocacy, doesn't the higher level of payments for a hot food license mean proprietors are already paying towards cleaning up? Maybe it could be increased a little but if it does cover cleaning then it should be ring fenced for that and not disappear into the general pot of NCC.

Or reduce the cost of the licenses and make it conditional that the staff have to tidy up a certain area around the shop. Although that would definitely prevent the council from spending it and that's not going to happen.

Like Keith says though, I drive through every now and then when I am feeling brave and have to go to Spar or fancy a detour and it is in a sorry state. Signed the petition for the Metro extension but that has been promised for god knows how long now as I remember being told about the plans when i was still cycling to Whitley Bay to go to the leisure pool and spend my pocket money at Spanish City. You just have to look at the sort of regeneration that Shiremoor/Backworth/Northumberland Park has had with the introduction of shops, Bellway homes and direct bus links across the region.

We need some way of getting the Bedlington-living commuters out of there homes and in and around Bedlington on a regular basis to get them to participate in e-peitions and local events but surely by introducing a Metro system and giving people direct links to Newcastle people are going to venture away from both the Top End and the Station.

Keep them in, lock the doors and only offer a horse and trap for direct access to Newcastle.

  11. Merlin,

I agree security is a valid concern and has to be taken into account but I don't accept we should forget about any ambitions we might have for the sake of hypothetical problems.

At the moment we have to win the initial arguments to get some focussed effort. Once we get something more concrete then we consider the possible resulting issues and at least try and pre plan contingences for them. The more questionnaires we get back the more serious the whole thing is taken.

Let's win the argument before we shoot ourselves in the foot!

I have added your suggestions, they are both already there and interestingly a bowling alley is quite a popular one.

    Brettly,

Added your idea for a 'reusable' graffiti board.

    Thankyou Malcolm.

Are you aware if the alcohol tagging is in place in the area too? I know it was being used (possibly trialled) in Blyth but it would be a good indication as to where the alcohol is coming from. It can't be the supermarkets as I can't even get served for alcohol at 25 (Look about 45 with a beard, which is more often than not).

  12. I know of a system where each shop that serves alcohol has a number so when said louts are found with drink when they shouldn't have it they can trace the bottle/cans back to the shop that sold the alcohol in the first place and there were provisions to prosecute the shop owner/keeper for selling the alcohol. I am not sure is this was an effort to increase the vigilance of the shopkeepers as opposed to preventing the sale of alcohol but I heard of the scheme having some success in Blyth.

Maybe if this is not active in the Bedlington area then it should be looked into as there are not too many places where young'uns can obtain alcohol, as say surrounding towns.

As for the park, how about a bill wall where it is acceptable for the young'uns to "decorate". That sort of action has proved successful in places like San Francisco and saved the surrounding buildings if there are legitimate places for the more creative to express there work. One wall rendered and painted white every so often wouldn't be a huge expense and we might even discover the next Banksy :shiftyninja:

I personally don't mind graffiti if it is well thought out and drawn. I object to chavvy nicknames scrawled all over buildings with a paint marker because Stacee luvs Macca and the likes.

  13. Well Malcolm if these 'purpose' built structures are not in use 24/7 whose to stop the vandals moving in? We all know what goes on in the park, you just have to count the white lightning and voddie bottles lying around! You have to admit that even with the Sustrans route, access is still restricted.

If you're that concerned Merlin, why not organise some sort of community event in the evenings so that the louts you mentioned can use the facilities that will be provided and hopefully they will respect the park rather than abuse it.

Maybe setup a voluntary 5-a-side tournament on a weekly basis or something similar. If I remember correctly there was something not too long ago which setup in Tesco car park with a make-shift 5-a-side court but a more regular event organised might lure people away from the drinking of cider and do something more productive.

  14. oooh interesting.

I have already notified one person regarding this who is also interested in possibly volunteering too John.

I would also recommending getting in touch with Shagpile who is a member on this here forum or he can be contacted via email via his site http://www.shagpile.org/contact.html.

I have seen him perform locally at Bubbles in Ashington and he is excellent as I am sure many others will agree and being a local lad to top it off.
