Eastgate Choppington

Hello All,

Brand new to the site and this is my first post. Reading through the forums I found this topic particularly interesting as I lived in that street for a while in number 28 with my Grandparents. I'm sure my Dad knows 'greenfingers' and I know 'pennylane909's' Dad.

I still live nearby and if you need to know anything I will try to help.

  • Some of Eastgate is still there, but the houses on the right hand side as you go into Choppington were pulled down around 1998/99 (i think).

  • If you don`t mind me asking, what is/was `the bullring`? Also, if you haven`t already joined these sites, it`s a great way to meet old friends from school or old neighbours. There is Friends Reunited

Hello bediesathome,

Thanks for the reply

Your right we are Reynolds's. You probably know my Dad David Reynolds and knew his late brother Jack Reynolds. The house was my grandparents David snr and Rose. I think they lived in it from new until just after my grandma died in 1975.

Hello bediesathome,

Spoke to my Dad earlier and he remembers you and your brother. He recalls that you were a mate of my uncle Jacks and you used to call to eachother by saying your names backwards. Also recalls the pair of you jumping out of your bedroom window at number 16 just to see if you could do it!!!!!!!!!!!

My Dad sends his regards.

Hello bediesathome,

Passed on your regards to my Dad and he laughed when I told him about your 'handwalking.' It seems you did it quite a lot.

I dont know if you have seen the Eastgate VE party photograph on the Sixtownships site, the link is here:-

My Dad tells me you and your brother John are on it as is my Dad and Uncle Jack.

Jack is in the front row, just up on the path wearing a white shirt and you are one place away from Jack's left. Your John is far right of the picture below Margaret Hall. My Dad is in the second row, also wearing a white shirt, and (I hope I get this right) 5th from your John's right.

Other 'well knowns' in the picture are Jean Snowdon and Ronnie Tilbury standing next to each other in the back row, nearly in the middle.

Hi, what an interesting read. I was wondering if anyone remembers the Boweys, Darlings or McCallums? They would have been there until the 60s.

Sounds like you knew him well, I'm not sure of your name so I can pass this on to him. I remember he told me about an accident he was involved in down the pit.

I would have been 3yrs old, but I can still remember walking up the Morpeth Road from GuidePost with my mam, on the last day to meet my dad after his last shift. He went to Pegswood Colliery after that.

I've spoke to my grandparents and George remembers you from school though he said you were a little younger than him. He also said your dad was an official at the pit and thinks you lived in Butchers St/Lane? My grandma remembers your brother Dennis? She also remembered the Gaff and Mrs Mavin who used to run it, she said you could hear her loud footsteps rushing to repair the film when it snapped even though she was a tiny woman. She used to live in the Strong's Houses (?) behind the gaff until she moved into the prefabs. She also remembers the dances in the parish hall.

She said you may remember her grandad Billy Dixon who used to drive the co-op horse and cart. :)

Is your brother younger than you? My grandma seems to remember going to school with a Besford.

The horse and cart driver was Billy Dixon, my great great grandad.2
